We made a bid for Sordell - Mirror

Sorry to bump this one up the rankings again, but for those of you who attended Saturday's match how did this lad play ? Did he look like the £4 million "wonderkid" the Mirror quoted?

I see he was substituted on the hour mark...

Pretty much invisible first time I really noticed him is when he came off........

This is becoming farcical. The player is obviously quite good so why would he want to come here when PL teams will be in for him if he has a tremendous first half season especially as he is now a very high profile young lad playing for Pearce's XI.

One gets fed up reading this sort of nonsense when we know Saints will inevitably bottle any bid deal where competition from other bigger clubs are involved. Leicester beat us in the transfer market and on the pitch. Let's face it our track record for completing deals of this quality is rubbish - we just don't have or won't spend the dosh - just like Gooners in fact who go on to win Arsene-all!

Spot on post. I was constantly told throughout the summer that i was wrong about our lack of signings from May right up to the very last hour of the very last day of the transfer window. 'Not a bean' I said and was absolutely correct.

FACT alert.

We are two points clear at the top of the league and quite patently the best team in the league.

Just thought all those ambulance chasers could do with a reminder...

Obviously vitally important that we sign a player who was so good against us we could have put ten past his team...

Bugger me. Mental. We're supported by people on day release.

Hilarious. You're so desperate to whinge, you didn't even notice you've already whinged in this very thread and quoting the exact same post. Top skills.

It's the striker buying process that I find the most perplexing. We've clearly bid for both up & coming players like this nipper but players such as Ebanks-Blake and Sharpe who are older and established.

Not based on any fact - except the signings we have made to date and the players we have been in for, but we seem to have a clearly defined criteria of the sort of the players we want to bring in; namley young with potential.

Our entire squad is now locked down through contract extensions, with a healthy list of potential academy players coming up behind them. I don't think Cortese has any intention of signing journeymen or even proven strikers who would simply last for the length of their contract and their resale value greatly reduced.

It seems to all tie in with his initial objective of making the club sustainable and developing more of our own players, whilst at the same time creating a "Southampton" brand of football.

Huge objectives, that no one in the top two divisions have really ever managed, with the exception of Utd and Arsenal, but then they always had the odd 30 million to help them on their and I dont ever see us paying that sort of money. ..... but I wouldnt bet against Cortese getting there.

Have they really achieved this objective?

They play a brand of football which can be beautiful to watch but which is utlimately delivering very little and the promised dream team has failed to materialise despite countless promises.

Only United have actually delivered success based on this premise and, as you point out, it is still supplemented by quality purchases - Rooney, Ronaldo, etc.

To achieve what United and Barca have is possible - it will sinply take the decades that it took them!!!

That would be very true if it was not for the fact we signed 4 players, but I suppose that would detract from your 'not a bean' statement just a tad.
