Saint_clark Posted 8 September, 2011 Posted 8 September, 2011 http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/transfer-news/Southampton-Watford-Marvin-Sordell-4million-January-bid-article796302.html Nigel Adkins will make a £4million bid for Watford wonderkid Marvin Sordell in January. Southampton boss Adkins is ready to table an improved offer for the England under-21 international when the transfer window re-opens. Watford rejected a £3m bid from the Saints on deadline day and are determined to keep the 20-year-old striker at Vicarage Road. But Adkins is set to make a renewed attempt to land the highly-rated Hornet in the New Year to boost Saints’s promotion challenge. Sordell scored a spectacular goal for the England under-21s in the 4-1 thrashing of Israel on Monday night. The mentioned goal (set up by Chamberlain) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za29OmrxEMg
The9 Posted 8 September, 2011 Posted 8 September, 2011 Seems to have started well in a not-so-great team, kind of like Maynard actually, wouldn't be surprised if we'd bid for him and equally unshocked he didn't sign for us.
Pilchards Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 Always wondered why we never went for him in the first place as he is fast & raw. The Mirror article does come across as bull**** because nobody knows that we will come back with an offer because I know Adkins would not of picked up the phone and told anyone.
St Jim Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 Apologies Saint_clark but I don't think any rumour in the Mirror is worth starting a thread on. They and the Daily Star have to have the worst record for journalism when it comes to informed rumours about player moves. I can not recall reading a Mirror rumour and it coming to fruitition. That said (and without actuall seeing him play, just reading up on him and his stats), although over the past 2 seasons he's scored 1 in every three games, given he is only 20 he maybe a good shout for the future.
Turkish Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 /\ I can. Alex Chamberlain. Our itkers dismissed his move To Arsenal as mischief making and bullish*t yet where is he now? Funny how a lot of people only believe the rumours they want to.
whelk Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 tis not worth much though as a rumour as any January action will be determined by the lads next 3 months and if shines then more people than us will be in for him and if poor would like to think that we would not pursue. Stuipid time for rumours although i did here we may get Beckham:lol:
bpsaint Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 Under-21 "wonderkid" suggests to me that he's far more likely to sign for a Premiership team than us.

Funny how a lot of people only believe the rumours they want to. And out of how many transfers did they print actually came off? Also, they started their Chamberlain transfer campaign end of last year. The one thing I agree with is people do only want to believe the rumours they want to happen, that's human nature when you have no tangible evidence either way.

I'll leave MLG the honour of posting the exact stats, but the Daily Fibber, sorry, Mirror, printed c.20 definitive articles over c.12 months saying that Chamberlain was on his way "imminently". They were right once in 20 attempts... To coin a phrase...my broken kitchen clock was right more often than them during the "Chamberlain's off" saga...
Foxstone Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 Quite happy to get excited about this rumour - Has some serious potential this lad and seems to fit with our strategy of "buying them young and developing them"!

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 They get a lot wrong, like ox-c the previous window, good to be linked with good young players They were right in the end though, weren't they, as he ended up at Arsenal. Also, I'm sure I read that NC said (at the fans dinner) that we believed Oxo had had a secret medical at Arsenal during January, which considered reporting to the FA - maybe this is what the Mirror were reacting to? Think Sordell would be a cracking signing, if there's anything in this, maybe even more so than Rodriguez.

Rather, people are pointing out that it was hardly the revelation of the century. Most papers predicted Chamberlain would be on his way, with Arsenal as one of the obvious favourites, as soon as he started turning heads in League One. The perception is that the Mirror kept banging on about it month after month whereas the other papers mentioned it every now and then. Hardly a 'scoop'. Anyway...onwards and upwards....

Charlie Wayman Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 This is becoming farcical. The player is obviously quite good so why would he want to come here when PL teams will be in for him if he has a tremendous first half season especially as he is now a very high profile young lad playing for Pearce's XI. One gets fed up reading this sort of nonsense when we know Saints will inevitably bottle any bid deal where competition from other bigger clubs are involved. Leicester beat us in the transfer market and on the pitch. Let's face it our track record for completing deals of this quality is rubbish - we just don't have or won't spend the dosh - just like Gooners in fact who go on to win Arsene-all!

Yeah, our track record for signing highly rated England U21 internationals like Jack Cork should indicate we just shouldn't bother trying to sign anyone. Adkins out!

Erm, well, we spent most of the last two seasons signing players from the same division (albeit League One) who could have signed for teams in the League above, and Cork at the very least could have played in the Prem if he'd wanted. Leicester and West Ham are spending loads but are both behind us in the table, and Arsenal just spent £12m on some kid who'd never played above League One, £8m on Gervinho, £10m on Arteta, £8m on Mertesacker and £6.5m on Andre Santos. So if that's "won't spend the dosh" I'd be glad of it.

sambosa75 Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 Would be a great signing if true. Reminds me of Welbeck who looks to come on leaps and bounds in the last few months.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 Wonder whether we could tempt them with a loan followed by a permy move in January? They added 2 strikers around deadline day + have Iwelumo & Deeney already. Perhaps we could offer £3999999 as a loan fee with a permanent deal for £1 in January?!

They added 2 strikers around deadline day + have Iwelumo & Deeney already. Perhaps we could offer £3999999 as a loan fee with a permanent deal for £1 in January?! Unlikely, seeing as their other strikers are either crap (for them)/unproven (Garner) and Sordell is literally their only vaguely reliable attacking outlet at the moment. Maybe in January, but most likely not on loan with a view to a perm.
Turkish Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 Harldy a fair comparison, it was obvious to any reasonably sensible human being that Oxo was destined for a big club, and that Arsenal fitted the bill. Not to some on here. He was staying with us. Many quoted on here he'd be with us for at least another season. He still would have been, if it wasn't for all the lies in the Mirror.
sfc4prem Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 Wasn't it the mirror that printed the deal for Fox and Rodriguez?
Chez Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 The Mirror get 21.5% of it's football transfer stories/rumours correct. FACT.
Rasiak-9- Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 He's the sort of player I could see us signing next summer if we're promoted to the Premiership but I'd be surprised if we got him in January unless we were right up there in the top two.
Wade Garrett Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 If we are happy to pay £4m for him, why didn't we offer that on deadline day?
Thedelldays Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 If we are happy to pay £4m for him, why didn't we offer that on deadline day? maybe we did...
Saint Garrett Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 If we are happy to pay £4m for him, why didn't we offer that on deadline day? Exactly what I was thinking. If we wanted him, why did we only offer 3m for him? If they rejected it and we were happy to pay more, we wasnt that then offered ? Seems a strange story to come out a week after the transfer window closes.

Ball boy Posted 9 September, 2011 Posted 9 September, 2011 I have watched him at Watford a number of times as I live near there. He's a very inconsistent player at the moment but should develop into a good player given time. Not sure how much he would add to our short term plans though.

Foxstone Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 Sorry to bump this one up the rankings again, but for those of you who attended Saturday's match how did this lad play ? Did he look like the £4 million "wonderkid" the Mirror quoted? I see he was substituted on the hour mark...
S-Clarke Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 He didn't look great, but we did defend well against him. He clearly has pace and a bit of power, but struggled to impose himself in the game in all honesty. He'll have better games, that's for sure. Still wouldn't put him in the £4m category.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 3 October, 2011 Posted 3 October, 2011 The Watford fans said it was his worse game of the season. Said he looked disinterested. I must admit I thought he was a bit crap and didn't really cause us any problems. It must be disheartening though, to chase the ball back and forth as the defenders stand in triangles passing it around in 30 degree heat. Then when your team do get possession they just lump it into space for you to chase. Even my dogs would get bored of chasing the ball around all afternoon.
