Has anyone here ever been to Manchester, and more to the point does anyone have, or know anybody that has, anything good to say about the city?

Lived on the outskirts for 7 years and have relatives living there now. Perfectly decent city, with good bits and bad bits like all cities. Have you taken against it for some reason? I'd certainly rate it higher than say Leeds.

Worked and and up until this year lived there for 20 years. Great city. You can eat at least 40 different types of countries cuisine. Some great hotels in the city centre now and there has always been a good night life there(probably due to the rain). Like Ian Brown once said "Manchester has everything except a beach".

Avoid the Chatsworth Estate. Rovers Return in, I think, Coronation Street serves a decent pint. Saaawted.

FFS, its fictional. Shameless was filmed in West Gorton and then on a dedicated location in Wythenshawe..

Manchester is fantastic, one of the few places I would choose to live, along with Sheffield, Guildford, Reading and Brighton, the latter being my main choice.

My company have an office in Manchester which I visit once a month and stay over night. I just like the place reallyt good, and the christmas do's are much better up there than the London ones.

There actually is a Chatsworth Estate......in Fleetwood. Moss Side, however......:scared::scared::scared:

( How long 'til there's a 'has anybody been to P****mouth?' thread ? )

No, I've got nothing against it as such. I may be moving up there someday soon, but everyone I'd asked prior to this thread has told me that its an awful place. This thread has some slightly more promising opinions!

Went up for a mates stag do last year. We were all hammered by the time we got there at midday.

We played that indoor golf thingy and the stag ended up ****ging a blow up doll in a bunker. When we got to the nightclub the stag emptied half of the comedy room by puking and taunting a blind comedian and his guide. It was a full hour after that before he was finally asked to leave.

The women up there are very friendly and all my mates, even the ones we suspected might have been gay, were chatted up. Basically it's the reverse of down here in the South where blokes have to make the first move 90% of the time.

All in all a nice place. Good feel to the city and it has a larger feel to it than Southampton which seems to work to its advantage.

Blimey. Who did you ask?

Having lived in Liverpool for 16 years, I should be telling you that Manchester is a sh*thole, etc, etc.

It's not. It's another big city, with all the fun and problems that entails. It's got a decent arena that is visited by world-class bands, an IMAX, some glorious architecture old and new ( Manchester Piccadilly looks positively futuristic ). Yes, there are plenty of toerags about, but really, you don't have to deal with that all the time.

Half the problems Southerners encounter when they come up North are a result of stuff they bring with them. I've seen people move to Liverpool, go around taking the p*ss out of scousers and are then surprised when one of the less tolerant members of the city gives them a good hiding.

I love the place. Great pubs and clubs; great restaurants. Lots of previous no-go areas are being gentrified, a bit like Newcastle.

Having been born and bred half way between Liverpool and Manchester, I always preferred Liverpool as a place to visit. There's nothing I particularly dislike about Manchester, just always felt that Liverpool has more character/identity to it. Still, you could easily commute between the two. There are some nice suburbs of Manchester - me and the Mrs very nearly ended up moving there for work a couple of years ago so we spent a fair bit of time sussing out the areas around Altrincham and Timperley (Frank Sidebottom RIP)

That said, I've spent the last 13 years living just south of Birmingham and I much prefer it to either Manchester or Liverpool - it doesn't have the "coolness" or "charisma" of Manchester or Liverpool, it just quietly goes about its business of being a KICK-ASS CITY!

UP THE BRUM! :)

Lived in Manchester for 13 years. Apart from the rain I love it. Something for everyone to do. Nightlife is good, shops and city centre are great, posh parts and dodgy parts like most places. I'm typing this overlooking the Manchester Ship Canal in Trafford watching four swans and a heron less than a mile from the city centre.

Worked in Manchester a number of years ago for a few weeks I was taken out for a meal in China Town and it turned out to be a very good night out.

I worked around that way for six years. There are one or two areas to avoid (dont approach moss side without body armour) but in general, a great place. And contrary to opinion on this thread, I always found most mancs to be friendly and approachable, far more so than down here.

Oh, well if you were serious, then if it's for a good job or something don't think twice... go. Salford Quays etc and roundabout are now gentrified areas with loads of flats and restaurants near the city centre, and there are many decent suburbs further out. Plus the public transport system isn't too bad, with the new tram. Basically it's a big city with all that entails, good and bad. Good nightlife, shops, arts and culture, etc but also some rough areas. Avoid Moss Side and much of Salford especially Weaste, but that'll be obvious from the relative property prices, for sale or rent. Places like Chorlton, say, give you a bit of both worlds, an inner suburb so easy travel to the centre, but also out of the problems that any city centre can have.

Tone down the (to them cockney) accent, don't act all southern and superior or ask where all the slag heaps are, sound impressed now and then, and you'll be fine. The cliches about northern people being friendly, especially as neighbours, have some basis in truth in my experience.

If I done the whole uni thing again I would go to Manchester, always been impressed when I've visited.

"If I done the whole uni thing again..."

Are you sure you even did it in the first place? ;)

Did a lot of work until about 2 years ago in Manchester - well Trafford and Salford to be precise.

Nice people but I wasn't too impressed with the hotels in the Trafford area. I managed to fit in a visit to the cricket ground and to Old Trafford to watch the Ure.

I hated the journey though :(
