We're back

This evening, I've upgraded the forum software from version 4.0.7 to 4.1.5, so that's quite a few versions we've jumped, hence the near two-hour period of downtime.

You will probably notice a few minor changes, the first is the edit box when you create a new thread or reply to a post. I'm not sure I like it yet, but I guess it'll grow. If anyone has any problems with it (in terms of any technical faults, not whether it looks pretty), please let me know.

I think we now have Facebook integration on threads as well, so you can "Like" threads, which will then post onto your Facebook news feed. Entirely up to you whether you decide to use this feature or not.

There will be another period of downtime, probably on Sunday, perhaps early next week, when we (finally) move over to a new server. This WILL be the last server move we make. As I have mentioned a few times recently, I've made a deal with my boss at work to put a new server into the company's data farm and utilise their resources for ourselves. This will see a massive improvement in performance and reliability.

Any questions?

Good to hear about the server, hopefully that will see matchdays and other high user occasions improve. The only question I have, will it stay at £5 a year?

Yes, no plans to change that for the forseeable future.

Ah, an echo of todays PMQs but in reverse ;)

Where have the smileys gone btw?

I only have one question. What is the likelihood of my wife giving me a blow-job?

I have one. What happens when you get fired? Will your boss give us our fivers back?

If someone then clicks the link from fb would they need to register to read it (this forum ) or would it be a "logged in" link ?

Probably a silly question but do these servers have unlimited access to every posters details and PMs etc?

No, as only I know the password to access the database.

What's the name of this company that I now have a financial stake in?

You don't. They are simply our suppliers.

Is this using Windows Phone 7? My HTC Mozart won't allow me to type on this forum now??

There are three different edit boxes available on the forum, which you can change within your user settings (click Settings at the top of the screen, then under "My Account", select "General Settings") - right at the bottom of the page, under "Miscellaneous Options", there are options for "Enhanced Interface", "Basic Editor" and "Standard Editor". Try using the basic editor as that's most likely to be compatible across all mobile browsers.

Have you ever considered the idea of having the ability to add signatures to posts Steve? Would brighten the place up a bit.

We've always had them turned off because they're an extra drain on resources (displaying them requires an additional query to the database for each post). Once we've migrated to the new server, we might look at turning them on, although I'm slightly reluctant to do so because a) it's an extra thing that we have to keep an eye on, as some people will abuse it, and b) they have the potential to take up a lot of screen space when most people would rather just read the thread.

If someone then clicks the link from fb would they need to register to read it (this forum ) or would it be a "logged in" link ?

At the moment, if the link was to a thread on the main board then yes, they would need to be logged in to read it. However, the power of the new server should allow us to open read-only access to people who aren't logged in as well.

I won't be switching all the bells and whistles on immediately when we migrate, as I want to double-check everything is running smoothly, but gradually I should be able to switch on various bits and pieces.

There is a mobile app that we're looking at, but it's going to require a fair amount of time to set up. I don't really want to put any time estimates on it as I'm really not 100% sure about what's involved there yet.

Wiki is on the "would like but not vital" pile at the moment, I'm afraid.

Hmmmmm - Fermats last theorem I believe - there is no solution to this

Infinite solutions, unless we specify that x,y,z are non-zero integers. Also, Fermat's Last Theorem was for the case x^n + y^n = z^n for n>2, the case of n=3 was proven long before Wiles, a proof using infinite descent is pretty straightforward.

I also vote "NO!" to signatures.. As people have said, they take up too much screen space, detract from the flow of the thread (a bit like some posters on here), and are often used for spamming

Plus they'd add to the server load during busy periods...

I believe Fermats last theorem was xn+yn=zn. However, I may be wrong, it's a long time since I played with this type of nonsense.

Edit:

Looks like I was beaten to it by Ludwig, at least it proves my memory is still working.

Ludwig beat me.

We have a winner!

Looks like having superscripts has opened up a whole new can of worms. :D

Change freaks me out. :-) Nah, it's ok really. Looks smart.

No to signatures too, I went on another team's forum recently, I forget which, and following the conversation was nigh on impossible because of all the signature pictures. It's not needed - like mySpace, it's just vanity.
