Sorry to say but apart from the San Siro I thought it was a terrible city. In fairness I was backpacking at the time so money was tight and you need a decent amount to enjoy that city.

That's alright- got the holiday for free anyway! Think AC Milan are playing Udinese the evening of the 21st so may try to get to that.

I know the city very well but don't consider it as a tourist place as such !

San Siro is a must if there is a match on (great experience!).

You can visit the Piazza del Duomo and the famous galleria and if you get a chance (and can afford it !) the opera at La Scala is world class !

The main highlight though is eating out, but avoid the main touristy type places on the main drags, much better to go local (get recommendations at the hotel !),

The area of Brera is good for bars, restaurants and nightlife but be warned that nothing is particularly cheap !

Ha well I'm glad that I haven't paid for it then! Any ideas how much train travel is compared to the UK?

Well, I live in Italy but don't bother with Milan: Turin is much nicer. But the trains are cheap: this is a useful web-site:

http://www.trenitalia.com/

Milan is probably the most expensive city in Italy and it's residents have a terrible reputation elewhere for rudeness and arrogance. After San Siro head towards the mountains: gorgeous.

I'd like to go to La Scala but the season isn't open yet, worth it if you are there then.

Thanks for your help guys. The girlfriend won the trip in a competition so I'm not too bothered if it turns out to be sh*t! Will definitely consider getting the train to other places, and think I'll probably go to the game at the San Siro, if tickets aren't too expensive.

Thanks a lot for your help suewhistle!

It's actually Milan fashion week while we're there- girlfriend won the trip with a fashion photograph and also has backstage passes to the shows so that should keep her quiet! Just leaves me to find something to do- thinking of travelling to Turin one day, would be good to check out Juventus' new stadium.

Much prefer Spain. A much more understated country with better food.

I suppose it's a matter of opinion but I don't think that Spanish cuisine is in the same league as Italian !

Di niente. Nice prize! It's embarassing that I'm an hour and a half from torino and have never been to the stadium(s). Saints and my women's side keep me busy (5 pre-season sessions last week!)...[if it came to supporting a local team it would have to be Toro: Juve are all plastics..] Turin's an easy day's journey (1.50hmm single 10€ or 1.03 €32 frecciaRossa) and the centre is attractive: see where the Italian Job was made! Good food and wine in Piemonte and to the North you can see the mountains where I live.

You are joking right? In last years top 10 restaurants in the world, Spain had 4 restaurants, 3 in the top 5. Italy had one in the top 10. Spend some time sampling true Spanish cuisine and I am convinced your opinion will change.

That's got little to do with 99.9% of the eateries that most people go to.

Anyway in comparison to some of the above comments. I'm not saying that Milan is a better place to visit that Turin for example (I've not been there) but I did enjoy my weekend in Milan. Had a great pizza in a local's pizza place that was recommended in the rough guide.

As I stated in my post "I suppose it's a matter of opinion" but I do have a strong view based on (lierally!) hundreds of visits to both countries !

( minimum 6 times a year for about 35 years!)

I have eaten in a few of the 'starred' restaurants, but over the years mainly in mid/high level establishments. My opinion is that the general standard in Italy (from north to south) is much

higher and more consistent !

So no, I wasn't joking !

I've never been able to get to grips with the south. Marches, Umbria, Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna west of the A1 is where my heart lies but principally The Marches around Amandola.

For northern cities nothing beats Parma as an allrounder but nothing at all tops Venice for the wow.

Honourable mentions for Vicenza, which I like very, very much, Padua, Verona, Bologna and Mantova.

If your after a bit of sightseeing , why not visit Bergamo , just 30 mins north of Milano.

Beautiful old town on top of the Hill inside the city walls.

Not much nightlife tho.

Though why they let a McDonalds in the Galleria I will never understand...

have to agree here, but a quick 5 min walk will take you to many decent family run eateries serving quality northern italian food

People that live in Southampton, Fareham & London saying Milan is s**t? Turin nicer than Milan? Mental. If you are going to go that far from Milan then go to Cinque Terre at least (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/ba/Vernazza04.jpg) rather than go to Como, Lecco or Turin. Visit Castello Sforzesco, Piazza Duomo, Brera, Neviglie, Le Colonne di San Lorenzo, La Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio (to see the Last Supper - book first) San Siro & if you go to see the Arco Della Pace then go toward the evening because the street that it ends (Corso Sempione) has loads of nightlife. The fashion week is mostly outside Milan in Rho Fiera (end of the red line on the Metro) but it's only about 30 mins to the center. Food in Milan is like any big city, ranging from terrible to brilliant, but incomparable with the South of Italy. Brera is the best place to eat in Milan IMO but it costs a little more.

Went a few years ago, its not that bad, same as any city some areas nice some areas ****. Cathedral worth a visit and dito with San Siro. Went to a nice park couldn't tell you the name of it. It might have been in some castle walls. No particular places to eat, we just went wherever was convinient and looked acceptable. Trains pretty easy. And when its hot, your treated to fans in the underground which spray water to help keep cool.

Going to Milan for a short break on the 21st, just wondering if anyone has been, and if so whether you have any recommendations for places to visit, eat, drink etc?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry didnt pass this on earlier!!

You will get a ticket (biglietti) easily at the ground - only 48,000 at prev home game - just take your passport/id with you. Ticket office at either end of ground SUD AC end NORD blue sh*te end. Suggest ticket on lower tier - dont get cheapest its a long way up!! Get the Metro Line M1 RED - stop LOTTO - follow fans as you exit. Dont get Tram - due to building of Metro extension it terminates a long way from ground and you then have to get a bus - not worth it.

Best place for nightlife is Navigli (canal) area - Porta Ticinese - taxi drivers know. Loads of bars/pubs/restaurants.

Have a great time - FORZA MILAN - Fossa dei Leoni - Commandos Tigre - Curva Sud 1968
