david in sweden Posted 6 September, 2011 Share Posted 6 September, 2011 (edited) now that the window has closed, and it's down to loans or unattached players. Most people are NOW convinced that we need to buy a striker and CB incl. many of those who were saying we had a good squad and shouldn't " upset it " by bringing in new faces. Opinions now appear to be very mixed between; (a) those who think we did right not to panic buy because we couldn't get our first choice, and (b) people who think we are in the sh*t, and are sure to self destruct ... because we haven't signed anyone. Several other threads have discussed ad nauseum the why and wherefor's, but honestly speaking ... WHO can we reasonably we expect to get in now? Prem. players who can't get a regular spot, or are injury-prone, surplus to requirements because of a high salary and reluctant to drop a division..OR a foreign import; another Papa Waigo or Guly..? An unknown talent who has never played in England ? It seems a difficult decision to make for a club who have lost only TWO of their last 22 games, and only scored 19 goals so far this season! david in sweden Posted 6 September, 2011 Author Share Posted 6 September, 2011 I think we've all concluded we don't know. well said Adriansfc ! ..exactly my point!. Is our squad that was so good a month ago suddenly substandard and without hope just because we didn't buy who we wanted.? I do hope we can put these " disappointments " behind us and get on with the season.
The Kraken Posted 6 September, 2011 Share Posted 6 September, 2011 Is our squad that was so good a month ago suddenly substandard and without hope just because we didn't buy who we wanted.? No, of course not. But neither should we forget that Adkins targetted CB and CF as two areas that needed improving; we have no new CF and we still don't know if the CB area has been improved. SFC Chris Posted 7 September, 2011 Share Posted 7 September, 2011 Can we get anyone else in on loan from Scotland or is it only from England? I say we offer James McFadden training facilities for a start!
alpine_saint Posted 7 September, 2011 Share Posted 7 September, 2011 We need to see if Hooiveld is up to the job immediately, especially as Seaborne is out for an extended period. Direct baptism of fire. If he's not, we need to go CB hunting again. Uncertain about the striker issue Wondering about RB.

Alanh Posted 7 September, 2011 Share Posted 7 September, 2011 For me striker is the only area that needs addressing in the short term. I'm really happy to see RL and DC as the preferred front two and am happy with Guly as back up forward. I'm concerned about Barnard and Forte's ability at the top end of this league but would obviously be delighted for them to prove me wrong and make a real impact. I'd like to see a striker with something different brough in to offer us alternatives - either a big battering ram to bring off the bench when we are chasing a game, or a speed merchant to scare tired defences. (I guess we might already have the latter player in Forte, subject to ability).

He is certainly the pick of those mentioned in that article. I would absolutely love it if he did come, but sincerely doubt he would. Of the others mentioned Danny Wilson and Danny Collins would also be useful. And far more likely, seeing as they are defenders called Danny!! He was lined up to go to Everton on loan but City refused to subsidise any of his wages, apparently £38K per week.

Matthew Le God Posted 8 September, 2011 Share Posted 8 September, 2011 (edited) Gave up hoping in June. On the whole I was proved right. Were you? 4 signings and 5 League games later, Saints sit 2nd in the League and in the 3rd round of the League Cup. Looks good to me (so far). I think we will be 17th, but comfortable, in that we will not be flirting with relegation. - Last season the team that finished 17th (Barnsley) had 56 points after 46 games. - Currently Saints have 12 from 5 games. So you think Saints will only pick up roughly 44 points from the remaining 41 games? Based on last seasons 17th placed team's record, that would be something like... Play 41 Win 10 Draw 14 Lose 17 I think you are being extremely pessimistic if you think that is how the next 41 League games will go for Saints!
