Where does James Beattie live?

Don't really think you can make any comparisons between goal scoring records in different leagues or even different clubs for that matter unless the player is playing exactly the same role in the same formation/playing style.

I'd be far more interested in a goals per scoring opportunity ratio as a mark of a striker's true quality. Does OPTA or anyone else keep those stats?

Even that doesn't really capture the nature or difficulty of the chances, long and short of it is it doesn't matter if you miss 20 if you score enough to win the match.

Can't see this has been mentioned already, but JB said on Soccer AM this morning that he could see himself signing for Pompey if they came in for him. This despite the Skates turning their backs on him as he walked into the studio

Also noticed Theo giving a bit of a tepid response when asked if he'd like to end his career at Southampton, said something along the lines of 'Yeah... well I really like New York so that's a possibility too'.

Appreciate you don't want him to come back, but I really can't see what harm it could do.

If someone was asking say 2-3 million for him, then of course the answer would be no - I wouldn't dream of suggesting otherwise. But the fact is he's a free agent, he knows the area well and he could come back and be part of something potentially very good at the club.

The big if is clearly his fitness as his track record shows that when he is not firing on all cylinders he struggles badly. But he's hardly in a strong bargaining position at the moment; if he was to ask for silly money to return then it's hardly likely we would agree to it anyway.

A purely speculative response...

The harm it could do is that we have a policy of signing fairly young players who see moving to Southampton as a step up and know that they will have to earn their place in the first eleven.

Signing BT, who has played most of his career at a higher level and was a star here before any of our current players arrived, could potentially upset the whole squad dynamic.

Lambert has been exemplary since he arrived. Would BT be happy to sign one the condition that he'd have to wait for his chance to start?

To be fair I don't necessarily disagree with you here. I know that we have got a cracking squad now that is pulling in the right direction, and we don't want anything to stop that.

I'm just open to him coming back because he has the attributes to improve the squad. I agree there are question marks over whether he would be overly keen being just a squad player, but that is what he would be if he were to agree a deal to come back to us.

What I'm not going to do though is write him off like many have on here. He's had a s*** few years but he has enough ability to do well at this level.

Beattie is defo int the area, I saw him in his lush Lamborghini toda heading towards Asda. So ties in nicely with what others have said about living in the area. Could he be training with us for a while? It happens alot nowadays with players training at random clubs when they are out of contract.
