Saint-Armstrong Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 ...(insert name). Who are the top 5 worst and best chairmen/owners around now in your opinion? (Can base opinion on previous clubs - e.g. Ridsdale) I got the inspiration for this thread from this cringe-worthy video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rC2_ZXYEZf8&feature=player_embedded Thank god we have Cortese and not some clown like that.
Turkish Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 Super Nicky has raised the bar when it comes to chairman. The only ones i would say comes remotely close is Niall Quinn as a former player of the club and Steve Gibson a fan of the club who has put his cash in, but they are a long way behind. Worst five. Ashley, Bates, Risdale, Barry Fry, Storey (Okay MD but he was running the club)

Foxstone Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 History is littered with idiot chairmen - I remember Brian Clough being asked for his opinion on football hooligans to which he replied " Well there are 92 club chairmen for a start" ! Those clowns at Brighton ( Bellotti ?) who closed the Goldstone Ground and made "their club" homeless for years.. The idiot at Darlington, The Icelandic biscuitbakers at West Ham all stick in the memory but to the above list Ithink I would add Carson Yeung currently.

Indeed, can't believe people on here still slate Cortese despite him being a serious businessman who's been headhunted by european giants like AC Milan. Compare him to this idiot and well...the pictures do the talking.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 Roman Dobov and Vladimir Antonov........not the billionaires they expected !
shurlock Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 (edited) Quinny is up there among decent chairmen, so is Randy Lerner and Dean Hoyle; and Bates simply because he's f**king up Leeds and an enemy of an enemy is a friend - you can also add Storey to that; Mandaric, Madejski, MacAnthony, Simon Jordan and the cockney porn barons - I don't need to say anymore. Disagree with you on this one - I think Madejski has served Reading very well over a number of years.
Huntingdon Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 Saudi Arabian Sam Hashimi launched a bid to buy Sheffield United He failed, and then decided to become a woman After a number of years of being Samantha Kane, he became a man again As Charles Kane he's now getting married He's still a keen follower of Sheffield United
dubai_phil Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 May be worth watching Bompey closely as well. they've had a fair share. Chairman telling fans to go support their alleged rival amongst others doesn't beat the Sheff Joker. Oh and Ken Dulieu
shurlock Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 Disagree with you on this one - I think Madejski has served Reading very well over a number of years. Agree, objectively, he's done a good job for them, though he's always been quite tight-fisted (and that's before his own personal empire took a battering). Still there is something about his attitude, something narcisstic and slightly aloof and disgruntled that grates with me.
Crab Lungs Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 Sisu. Woah, steady there - plenty of ready made experts on here were clamouring for their involvement not too long ago...
holepuncture Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 Roll up roll up get your dodgy owners ere!
Lighthouse Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 Pompey must be doing something right. Having financially missmanaged a club on a truly intergalactic scale, they've managed to find yet another shifty owner and started buying players for £1m again. That kind of lunacy takes genuinely tallent and I think we should applaud all those involved with the club.

Probably quite a good likeness, but then how will we ever know? How on earth did storyteller get away with that one and manage to get his FAPPT approved as well??? In response, instead of smelling a rat, the FL apparently sent them one of their best men (not saying much) to carry on the dubious dealings as if nothing untoward had ever happened down there in the land that time forgot.
doddisalegend Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 Are football chairman suppossed to be liked (NC aside of course)?
Crab Lungs Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 It's almost as if the 'anyone but Lowe' shouts weren't insightful genius. Got rid of him first time and let in Wilde to destroy the club far quicker than Lowe would have managed. Then we wanted SISU and the mugs at Notts Country. Heard similar from Everton and Blackburn fans, 'why are they investing there and not here'.....i think a bit more research and sense is needed. A REAL fit and proper person's test would help too. ...and yet we moan about who is on the front of the programme, lolz. Perspective, eh?
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 Are football chairman suppossed to be liked (NC aside of course)? They can't make everyone happy, but when you look at some of the awful chairman in this thread it puts into perspective how well off we actually are.
Pedro Posted 5 September, 2011 Posted 5 September, 2011 The Blackburn lot deserve all that's coming to them (hopefully) not a particular fan of Big Sam but he was treated disgracefully and is a good manager.

Cabrone Posted 13 September, 2011 Posted 13 September, 2011 The late John Batchelor. When he bought York City he changed their name to 'York City Soccer Club' in order to appeal to 'US markets'. He also altered their crest + first team kit. When York City went into administration (Batchelor made a tidy £300k profit), he tried to buy Mansfield Town and change their name to Harchester United (after the imaginary team in Sky's TV's 'Dream team'). Just to complete the hat trick he also tried to buy Accrington Stanley with the aim of renaming them 'Lancashire United'. He was also involved in bids for Chester City and Saints (for £12.5M) in Jul 2009 (lucky escape). Died in 2010 of liver problems caused by his alcoholism. Quite possibly the most clueless chairman around - and clearly one of the worst.

Still there is something about his attitude, something narcisstic and slightly aloof and disgruntled that grates with me. Very strange view of Madejski. Tight-fisted he certainly isn't, he is a major benefactor for arts and education, and has taken Reading from a small-time club in a run-down "stadium" to a PL/Champ Club in a nice new stadium. He is still a very wealthy man, self-made of course all from his beginnings with Auto Trader.
Seany S Posted 13 September, 2011 Posted 13 September, 2011 Neuchatel Xamax must have the worst current chair/owner type, seeing as he has threatened to kill his players and sacked the entire management set up and backroom staff, details here: http://www.wsc.co.uk/component/option,com_kunena/Itemid,73/func,view/catid,27/id,554914
Gorgiesaint Posted 13 September, 2011 Posted 13 September, 2011 Surprised no-one has mentioned Vladimir Romanov of Hearts - a complete lunatic. I was hoping that the two muppets that took over down the road would be of a similar vein... and there's still time!

Prince Jazzbo Posted 14 September, 2011 Posted 14 September, 2011 A famous footballer (I can't recall who), had a chapter in his autobiography called something like 'What the Average Club Chairman Knows About Football'. This was followed by about 20 blank pages. I remember this greatly upsetting Brian Moore who was Chairman of Gillingham at the time.

Viewing his own rather unique brand of gubernatorial skills on the weekend, I'm not sure we should entirely dismiss the idea ...

The only people that don't like him are ungrateful dinlow Reading fans who have decided that because he is a multimillionaire he must spend every last penny on footballers fees and wages. I remember plenty of grumbling Reading fans moaning about when he decides to buy a sculpture, or invest in an arts project or whatever. It's his freaking money and he aint obliged to spend everything on the bottomless pit of a football club and a bunch of fairweather fans who'll end up hating him regardless. Without him, they would never have got into the Premier League in the first place, and they certainly wouldn't have their nice stadium.

They should worship that man until the day he dies!!

Man U fans protested against their yank owners and they've hardly had it rough. I reckon Man city might have the only happy fans in the country (and even then I wouldn't put money on it)

Brighton was Bill Archer and David Belotti who tried to clear their depts by selling their ground. Great but there was no ground left to play in. Not only that but the site was then resold at a greater profit. Archer had an interest in the selling company who made the profit. A prise c*nt.
saintedwill Posted 15 September, 2011 Posted 15 September, 2011 I'd put Steve Gibson, the Bristol City bloke and Dave Whelan up there with the good ones

Some clubs are big to start with though and I can see Arsenal's fans getting annoyed as AW wouldn't spend any money. Reading are different - knocking round with us then suddenly hit the big time, just because of JM. I wonder if all City's fans are that happy. I would like investment at Bournemouth, but not too much (if you know what I mean..)
