Oscar Gobern - Tribunal Today

Lallana's Left Peg

Recommended Posts

According to this article, we find out how much we get for him from Huddersfield today.

I reckon we'll get about £150k for him, with £100k in add-ons. Tribunals always end up lower than the selling club wish.

Dunno where he's been playing on the field, but Gobern has started 6 of 9 Huddersfield matches this season, been subbed in 2 and hasn't won a match in the League yet - featuring in 4 successive draws!

He's actually been left out for the Carling Cup trip to Cardiff and their two home wins but seems to be an integral part of their team when they play away. That can't hurt our case.

He's also got squad number 10.

Noticed he hadn't started all their games !

Can the tribunal also set a sell-on clause? I only ask as like Ken Tone, think he has the making of a decent footballer and the tribunal has tended to side on the receiving club valuation based on development.

Yes they can. It was only a year ago we signed Ryan Dickson from Brentford for a fee that went to tribunal.

At the tribunal, the fee was set at £125,000 with a further £25,000 for every 10 appearances Dickson makes for Southampton on 10, 20, 30 and 40 appearances. There will also be £25,000 due if Southampton win promotion within three years together with a 20 percent sell-on clause

Thanks, I didn't know about the 20% sell on bit. The tribunal panel got criticized after the Bostock transfer a few years ago, maybe they are starting to structure the fees due a bit differently. It'll be interesting to see the comparison with the Dickson fee.

Fee set. £275k up front, rising to over £400k based on certain stipulations (which are not disclosed by Saints in their initial article).

Huddersfield made a slow start to the season, not sure if they will go up.

That's much more than I thought we'd get but it looks like no sell on which would explain it.

Undefeated in 6 matches suggests they're doing alright even if they're drawing too many, you can't win them all.

The fee is about £25k more than I thought we'd get, based on previous tribunals.

As you can see if the thread above from our message board, opinion is split on him

As I've seen it so far, he is going to be a top player for us over the next couple of years if Lee Clark uses him properly. After what you lot had said about him, I was expecting some donkey who couldn't play football but he has been quite the opposite. Would have been my MOTM at the weekend. Decent in the tackle, uses the ball really well, wins his fair share of headers and generally looks a good player. Clark seems to think that Tommy Miller should be playing ahead of him which is a strange one as Oscar has been by far the better player so from what i've seen of the two. I'll be amazed if he doesn't spend the majority of his career in atleast the championship. His piece of skill against Cardiff to set up our 3rd goal shows what he has got in his locker, it just about getting it out of him on a consistent basis

Cheers fella. Some fans on here will slate anyone who doesn't score a hatrick on their debut! Always looked very promising when I saw him but never really got much of a look in. I think he could become a good player. Good luck for the season.

Congrats on the good start by the way, you looked top drawer against Leeds

Half expected it from you lot with the likes of Cork, Lambert and Lallana in your side. More shocked by Brighton though but I guess they are still riding that wave of momentum from promotion and new stadium. Can't see them lasting the course

Would go along with that - basically turned a championship game on its head when he first appeared for us back in 2008. Buckets of potential if slightly erratic; needs regular football and to play alongside an experienced midfielder if he's going to deliver. Therefore its a shame if as you say he's not starting games - would have thought there would be room in your side with your damned 4-5-1. When's Clarky going to take off the gloves and throw a bit of caution to the wind? You don't win anything going unbeaten ;)

Good luck with the rest of your season and you get auto this time and hope we see that extra £125K.

Cheers - the start has surprised us too! Beaten anything done in our history!

Always felt a little sorry for you not going up last season, you did everything but - the end of last season was relentless from both of us. Was impressed with you signing Danny Ward and Mcdermott - surprised you haven't had more wins though. Reckon you'll do it the automatic route this year?

You will have noted that our fanbase is split on almost every player in the club.

There's even some who are quick to criticise Ricky Lambert ...(as if 60+ goals in 2 seasons wasn't good enough)

Like many before him Oscar Gobern had a good career in our Academy (despite a serious injury the club stood by him) but making a choice of who stays / goes at 18 is a very difficult task. Oscar was amongst the best of his year, but came up against the problem of trying to dislodge established players who were older than him. He's keen to play and I'm sure he'll do a good job for you.

If your fans are a bit surprised at the size of the fee, remember he came through one of the best Academy sides in the country, and

if he's still a regular with you in 3-4 years time, you'll feel that you got a good deal I'm sure. Good luck to him.

Like several others on here, I feel Huddf'd were really hard done by last season and gave us a good run, right up to the final games and deserved to go up ..certainly more so then Peterboro' ..*!!!!!

Hope you can keep up with MK Dons as they seemed to have come good just now.

They make the deal look even better IMO. He has a great chance of making at least 30 apps this year for them as he is a key member of their side so thats another 60k and I'm pretty sure it won't be long before they do get promotion. Great deal for a player that didn't want to stay and wouldn't have got much of a look in anyway.

He most reminds me of Patrick Vieira in style, if not ability. It's difficult for many Saints fans to judge as he only ever played occasionally in a poor team and very rarely in a good one - his unexpected appearance at Withdean on the right of an equally rare 4-3-3 at the end of last season gave a glimpse of his potential, but he was never going to get a look in once we signed Cork as he was already behind Hammond, Chaplow and Schneiderlin in the pecking order.

And Rickie Lambert ? Too slow, can't beat people on the ground and doesn't get on the end of enough low balls. ;)

They've basically carried on their form from last season into this season then, not losing any games but not winning enough to challenge at the top for a prolonged period.

that is a good deal, can't complain with that, the £275,000 straight in the bank, he already has 7 appearances inc cup, i'm sure he will get to 45 fairly quickly as 46 league games plus carling cup, JPT, and chance to get through early rounds of the FA Cup they could end up playing 50-53 odd games easily. He has already got 7 appearances. and i reckon they could get promotion in the next two seasons, that would make it £445,000 decent money on top of the £12M for Chamberlain.

Kerching! Excellent deal for us at this moment in time. May develop into a good player but not a given. Was only expecting £200k absolute tops.

£445k would be a decent total if we can get that by May 2013. The promotion bonus looks realistic this season or next (they're no bigger than 7/4 to go up this season), and gives me a reason to get behind Huddersfield in League One, they're probably "due" in any case.

20% cut of any sale profit is a bonus...

Oscar had a good game Tuesday. It's clear to many Town fans that this lad has talent but it's only going to come out with regular football which is something that Saints cannot offer him.His appearance as sub against Cardiff changed the whole complection of the game and he looked a special player.Only time will tell but at this point in the season the majority of Town fans think he could be a very good signing.Terrific start for you lot hope you keep it up.Finally,on a different subject. Our Chairman holds regular Q&A sessions with the fans at a local boozer. In the session last week he was asked what he thought his biggest mistake was had been in the 3 years he has been here, the answer--"not paying Bristol Rovers another £250k for Rickie Lambert"

Yep, that would have been an extra £250k very well spent!

Hope you guys are in the Championship next season, deserve it after how close you've come the last couple of seasons, and the pressure you put on us last year to drive us over the line!

Good to hear about Gobern. If you look at Gobern-threads on this forum you'll see that (to a certain extent) Saints fans agree with your view and some are expecting Oscar to become a good Championship player. If you consider how a majority of football fans feel about former players it's actually quite telling that Gobern is not entirely discarded as someone who will always be crap...

As for the Lambert issue... phew! :D

This lad will be a premiership player sooner than later

Come back from an injury lay off and is running our midfield. First touch is immense and he played what was probably the best pass i've ever seen watching town in yesterdays game

Has everything you need to be a classy central midfielder and is only going to improve

That tribunal could be a bargain for us

Good to hear he's doing well. He wouldn't have got near our team this season with our midfield options, so this was a great move for him.

Clearly found his level as he wouldn't get near our reserves this season but fair play to the lad.
