1976_Child Posted 2 September, 2011 Share Posted 2 September, 2011 I bet the scum who did this to Dan end up with a soft 4 year sentence and will be out in 2 years. Whereas they should be sent down for 25 years hard labour - not playing Nintendo in their cushy cells but breaking rocks for 10 hours a day, every day. And 25 years should be just that. 25 years. We are too soft on thugs like these. I would also suggest taking a leaf out of the Malaysian justice handbook and sentence these scum to 20 hard lashes of the cane. david in sweden Posted 2 September, 2011 Share Posted 2 September, 2011 (edited) It is a shock to read something like this, and although not (sadly) uncommon... it brings it home when you realise it's someone so well-known, and a key member of team (whether it be Saints, or whoever). Really hope it's not so serious and he may be on the road to recovery SOON. It's " freak occurances " like this (and Lee Barnards case) that make a mockery of the argument that we don't need a deeper squad and what we have is good enough. It's fine if you have 11 players fit and on-form, and they don't get injuries or suspensions ! This is a once-in-a-lifetime happening, but nevertheless is a warning that we can take nothing for granted in life, (or football). John Smith Posted 2 September, 2011 Share Posted 2 September, 2011 Not nice news although I've learnt Dan did not help himself according to many. He was seen lording it in the club, saying how he earns more than anyone else in the club, googling himself to girls proving he’s a footballer (when most didn’t recognize him), being absolutely obnoxious, bugging women, slapped a doorman/got warned/did it again, got hit. You can't go around slapping doormen and expect no action. Obviously some others took it further. Not condoning anyone being assaulted or hospitalized but he obviously didn’t help himself with that behaviour. Silly boy! Cortese will hit the roof at more bad press. He won’t tolerate it. It's a shame some of the arrogance football and earning big money breeds. Let's hope he recovers soon as no-one deserves to be hospitalised. First off, I hope Dan gets well soon, my thoughts are with him and his family. Secondly, whether or not it was a rest night or not, players at this level should not really get too involved in nightclubs, regardless how young, it is a place where many have been hurt or accusations thrown, prison sentences looming (Barnard?). However, a bit of lording it up, googling oneself to girls (if that is the case), is not anywhere near worth a night or 10 in hospital. If he did 'slap' a bouncer', silly boy, but again, serious head injuries as a result is not on. Bouncers are not the police, are not the army and have no right to pulverise someone for 'any' reason. they have the right to remove you from the premises, and have the right to defend themselves, to the same limit as you or I. They are supposedly trained and should not get involved in this sort of behavior. Lastly, I would like to point out that I have had experience of night clubs before that when they feel the pressure because a patron has cause for complaint, the nightclub 'finds' witnesses, usually girls, to say they were attacked, leered at, found something uncomfortable etc. this is why it is imperative to get a reliable witness from inside the club, because it is unlikey CCTV will represent what went on inside. Allegedly.

1976_Child Posted 2 September, 2011 Share Posted 2 September, 2011 I assume you'll be livid if Barnard doesn't end up with a lengthy prison sentence then? Get well soon Dan Yes, if he is guilty as charged then he too should be punished with a lengthy prison sentence. Why would you assume I would make an exception just because he plays football for Saints? Thuggery and lawlessness should always be punished severely. No wimpy liberalism of the Ken Clarke variety. If Barnard shoved a glass into someone's face and disfigured him and it is proven then he should lose his liberty for a long, long time and be made to live in the most basic conditions - not a cushy modern hotel-with-bars. The9 Posted 2 September, 2011 Share Posted 2 September, 2011 perhaps they could share a cell with Barnard then eh If there's one thing people suggesting severe punishments are always supportive of, it's the implementation of consistent sentencing across the board. That's the least of the worries at the mo though, hope for his sake and his family that he makes a recovery to live a normal life. I'm not sure we can make any assumptions, not knowing how the head trauma manifested itself. Could just be a big bump that ko'd him with no lasting damage, or something much more serious that they've managed to control but will have an impact. I don't think we're in Jeff Astle heading a wet leather ball for 25 years territory any more either, the balls are a lot lighter than they used to be, and there are already a few players with head protectors due to previous injuries, like Cech and Chivu. The9 Posted 2 September, 2011 Share Posted 2 September, 2011 I don't think the outcome actually needs to impact the punishment. The moment you lash out an inflict such violence on someone, even if one punch to the head, you're taking full responsibility to their injuries. They could hit their head, have an existing condition etc, the attacker clearly has no concern for their wellbeing. So if the attacked person comes out of it ok, it's pure luck. That luck shouldn't save the attacker IMO. Good to here Dan is conscious and really hope there's no damage and he'll be back playing ASAP. Where did it say he was conscious ? Not in the OS statement. Tony Lynam Posted 2 September, 2011 Share Posted 2 September, 2011 What an absolute disgrace. Whoever did this, for whatever reason, deserves punishment befitting the crime. People are too quick to lose sight of the fact that this is just a young man who was enjoying an evening out. Sure he is a footballer, and that brings with it responsibilities, but everyone is entitled to let their hair down without fear of some mindless moron(s) attacking them. I hope that this young man makes a full and speedy recovery and gets the opportunity to see those responsible put behind bars for a very long time. At times like this, football can wait. No. In case you failed to realise, I was making a (admittedly rather drunken) political point about the similarities of wack-jobs on a murder binge and Western foreign policy. Maybe not subtly and perhaps not appropriately, given the context, but something in the pious tone of our 'leaders' pontificating about the 'evil' of that nutter's actions whilst not realising their actions were just as evil - if not more so - just really p!ssed me off. Anyhow, no need to get in to that here. This is thread about Dan.

As much as I despise bouncers, bare in mind that the fact that he has serious head injuries is possibly because of him falling backwards after being ushered away etc, or equally could be because he was 'thrown' out of the club, we don't know yet, so lets get a bit of perspective and leave the wild accusations to the mongs on the Echo website until we know whats happened shall we ? Secondly, if you were a bouncer, yes they are trained to handle situations and try to difuse them but some times they will react, they are human, obviously you would be impervious to someone drunkenly screaming in your face and slapping, hitting you for instance ?? I am not a bouncer and don't much like bouncers, but at least be a tad realistic. Now back to Danny, I hope whatever happened he makes a speedy recovery and my thoughts go to him and his family, he is entitled to a little social time every now and again and noone deserves a serious injury.
