Rut Posted 31 August, 2011 Share Posted 31 August, 2011 Yes it is poofs rugby & it keeps stopping/starting & there are millions of players & blah blah blah. Anyway - any NFL fans still lurking around? Not long til the new season. My division picks are: AFC East - Dolphins North - Steelers South - Houston West - Broncos NFC East - Dallas North - Bears South - Saints West - Rams There are a few outsider-ish teams there. Mainly because the 8 favs never all win. This year they are: Patriots 8/13 Steelers Evens Colts 11/8 Chargers 8/15 Eagles 10/11 Packers 8/15 Saints 11/8 Rams 15/8 Back all 8 at these odds in an accumulator and if they all win it pays just over 234/1. Take out Saints & Rams and those 6 pay just over 33/1. Sounds like easy money ey? Got my usual bet on the Broncos and have done Saints at the start of the season (like I always used to do until the season they actually won it of course). Of course the other thing you always hear is 'at least the cheerleaders are fit' - can't argue with that one. lettuce Posted 1 September, 2011 Share Posted 1 September, 2011 Yep, I'll be tuning in. Expect my beloved Seahawks to plod through the season as usual... however, there's a reasonable chance of them repeating last season's achievement of becoming the first team in NFL history to win their division with a losing record... yay, go Seahawks! keithd Posted 5 September, 2011 Share Posted 5 September, 2011 Am a Dolphins fan, I know bits about the game but only pay attention once the season starts so have no idea about draft picks and the like. What made the OP go for Dolphins in the Eastern? Traditionally like SFC being slow starters do you see them doing a Saints (FC) and going nap at the start? Lets hope so. Only thing I dislike about the NFL is that it means the start of winter in my mind, cold dark Sundays watching the games. SAD here I come.... shurlock Posted 5 September, 2011 Share Posted 5 September, 2011 (edited) Missing the Forest game on Sat, my first league game of the season coz of work commitments in the US; but have managed to get a ticket for the Ravens-Steelers game. Should be nice and competitive (alas nothing like December 18 ) and even this early on will have some bearing on who wins the division and possibly who goes all the way. Hope Ravens win. Rusaldo Posted 5 September, 2011 Share Posted 5 September, 2011 Went down to Coral and these are their odds for Superbowl winners (Top 16): 6/1 - Patriots 13/2 - Packers 8/1 - Eagles 10/1 Chargers 14/1 – Steelers 14/1 – Ravens 14/1 – Saints 14/1 – Jets 16/1 – Falcons 20/1 – Texans 20/1 – Colts 20/1 – Cowboys 25/1 – Giants 33/1 – Bears 33/1 – Lions 40/1- Buccaneers I think (with my limited knowledge) that the Eagles are a good bet at 8/1. Born In The 80s Posted 5 September, 2011 Share Posted 5 September, 2011 Very much looking forward to it all kicking off this week - must say, sunday nights just aren't the same without a bit of NFL. Should be a very interesting year. I can't say i'm expecting anything from my Vikings. I reckon we'll do well to finish the season above .500 in our division. Look out for the Lions to be a strong force in the NFC. I can see them grabbing a wildcard spot if Stafford says healthy. You've also gotta love what Philly have done in the off season (although i seem to tip them to win it every year). Here are my divisional picks anyway: AFC East - Patriots North - Ravens South - Houston West - Chargers NFC East - Philly North - Packers South - Saints West - Rams

Looking forward to the first game on Thursday. Does anyone onhere have Verizon Red Zone subscription and, if so, is worth it? Verizon Red Zone - what country is that in? What is it? I often watch the Red Zone channel in the USA. It's the one where they just go live to whatever game currently has the best action (ie in the red zone). There are no commercials and it is quite watchable. If the Broncos are playing I will just watch that game though - praps flicking to Red Zone during the commercials. Yeah looking forward to Thursday as well. Would love to see Saints do a number on GB. Should be a good game.

Saint in Paradise Posted 19 September, 2011 Share Posted 19 September, 2011 Enhanced pat-downs coming to a stadium near you. "The NFL has officially recommended that every fan be subjected to the same invasion of privacy known as the “enhanced pat-down,” better characterized as a grope-down, utilized by the TSA around the nation, both in and outside airports. All that USA Today has to say about the ridiculousness of bringing an enhanced pat-down to a sports stadium and forcing even more Americans to allow their rights to be trampled on is that, “It’s sure to raise the ire of some fans who consider it an invasion of privacy.” For any sane person in the United States that prizes their liberty, this should be considered yet another affront to the American way of life. While I do not support the entire industry of professional sports, as you might have assumed by now, I cannot stand in silence while we are further desensitized to having our privacy stripped and our dignity sullied. Seeing fellow Americans accept these types of procedures, often with a smile as in the case of the woman who allowed her infant’s diaper to be examined by a TSA goon earlier this year, tends to be disturbing." http://www.activistpost.com/2011/09/enhanced-pat-downs-coming-to-stadium.html

I normally do this on ESPN as well. Going into tonight's game I have 13 out of 15 right. I missed Houston and I don't believe this, Denver. I blindly do the Broncos to win every week but this time with all the injuries and the poor show v Oakland I picked bleedin' Cincinnati. First time ever I've gone against them and of course they win. This week I didn't do it on ESPN either. I have the Rams to win tonight. I can change this if I want. They are the outsiders (but not as much as the Titans were and they won). 14 out of 16 can often win it. Do I stick with the Rams or go with the Giants? Anyway - good to see the Bills & the Lions showing some early promise. SFC, AFC Totton & the Broncos are now all currently top of their divisions. You don't get to say that too often :-) (Broncos joint-top - counts for me)

Problem is Vick got concussed and subbed out in third quarter. Back up QB Vince Young is injured so Mike Kafka had to step in (and did well). Let's hope he keeps it going as he's probably starting next match now for MV. Andy Reid (aka the fat man) needs to sort out the O line before Vick gets killed. Guy's just got a 100 mill contract but they they can't defend him in the pocket. But it will all work out, too many good (some great) players on board not to make post season and if Vick stays healthy this team is heading for a Super Bowl. Would be smart to sort out DJax's contract pronto though.

Yeah, Andy Reid thinks he's smarter than the rest of the league but he usually manages to stuff up the O line and the red zone is more like a disaster zone these days. But they have so many spectacular players elsewhere that they have accumulated to win a super bowl and their scoring potential keeps opponents under pressure despite the faults. Ultimately it rests with Vick, he is like no other QB and can pull astounding plays seemingly out of a hat. If MV7 stays upright long enough the city of Philadelphia will be a desolate place unless the parade down Broad Street goes ahead next February. Go Eagles! Saint 76er Posted 22 September, 2011 Share Posted 22 September, 2011 They've got a new O-Line coach though haven't they? old timer from Indiana who has come out of retirement to see if he can do the impossible. Yeah, that's Howard Mudd he was a legend at the Colts but fell off his motor cycle once too often and gets around with a cane now. He retired in 2009 (he is late sixties) but Andy Reid persuaded him to come out of retirement as he needed a big name replacement for Juan Castillo who he promoted from O line coach to defensive coordinator. Juan is a great guy and meticulous coach but he hasn't coached defence since high school twenty years ago. This was a huge gamble and dominated the media in Philly for weeks when it happened. Took everyone by surprise as coaches don't normally change from O to D or vv. Furthermore as a coordinator Juan has to call the game day plays and he's an excitable Mexican and no one knows how he will handle head set duties. Funny story, in pre season camp Juan rushed onto the field to make his point face to face with one of his charges, as he is wont to do, and ended up headbutting the guy as he got carried away with the moment. Only trouble was the guy was wearing a helmet and Juan turned up at the next days presser with a nice gash on his forehead! So that's the story on Howard Mudd, and to think someone earlier on this thread said NFL was boring or something like that!

Rut Posted 26 September, 2011 Author Share Posted 26 September, 2011 Well 3 games down. 13 to go. The Bills coming back from 21-0 down to beat the Patriots was an incredible result. How many more games do the Bills have to win to be taken as serious contenders? If it had been the other way round the media would have had their tougue so far up Brady's a*** it would have turned almost black. Brady actually showed a few signs of bottling it yesterday. You don't become bad based on one game but it just shows that a bit of pressure gets to everyone. NE @ OAK next week. Quite an important game now for both of these teams. Eagles? Well perhaps now the media can drop the 'dream team' hype around them. Praps they can hype the 3-0 Lions instead? Packers? Despite winning it last year I didn't really rate them. I think I could be wrong here though. Broncos. It's only a conspiracy the size of Watergate that has them not at 3-0. It's Broncos @ Packers next week. This could be painful to watch - or the game where the Broncos get it together. I'll go with the latter until proved wrong. I'd like to see WAS win tonight. Another team with no media love-in but have started well. Even if he starts then surely Romo won't be 100%? If he does play (and play well) then fair play. Should be a good game whatever happens. Indeed WC, this is a very Kafkaesque conundrum! Vick might well start next week as it is his non throwing hand. He is starting to complain bitterly about lack of protection from officials as he has a target on his back and is being blitzed to pieces, as teams perceive you stop Vick you win the game. A little help from his supposed protectors would help though. If Vick can't perform then stellar receivers like DJax, Maclin and Steve Smith also can't perform. Andy needs to sort this pronto. He keeps saying this is SB year and they have added some nice pieces, but left big gaps elsewhere like the secondary which is being manned by mostly rookies and sophomores. Consequently being killed there and playing wide 9 this year is leaving huge gaps for LBs to cover and it's not working out. Andy Reid joked that they left a gap so big even he could probably fit through it. Check out a picture of AR and you will see what he means! If MV can't start then expect to see Vince Young suit up, his hammy should be just about okay now. Young is a 6' 5" pro bowler and highly skilled but unpredictable. He had problems at the Titans and is being given a second chance at the Eagles, so it may be pay back time. Bizarrely, a Vince Young impersonator has been arrested (in NY I think) for passing dud cheques and other cons in Young's name!
shurlock Posted 26 September, 2011 Share Posted 26 September, 2011 Good win for Ravens, though against a very poor Rams side. Torrey Smith's introduction (who had been slated in preseason) was nothing short of sensational- still raw but a proper speed merchant while Ray Rice was showing what damage he can do in space and Flacco looked quite comfortable moving out of the pocket, even without the usual support in the O line. Much happier with the pass rushing/blitzing -more aggressive than last season and what the Ravens are about. The game against the Jets will be a tougher test - there are still question marks over the secondary/cornerbacks as the Tennessee game highlighted and ts early days for a new side that hasn't plenty of time to gel. You can have the best players in the glamour positions but if this is at the expense of your defensive backs, offensive linemen etc it will be hard for these good players to shine. I wouldn't say the Rams are that bad. Just that yesterday the Ravens made them look bad (just like they did the Steelers in Week 1). Reproduce those 2 games (what the hell happened @ TEN?) and you'll beat the Jets easily next week.

shurlock Posted 3 October, 2011 Share Posted 3 October, 2011 Good win for the Ravens and an unbelievable game in which only 7 points of the 51 were scored from the line of scrimmage. After their freakish performance against the Rams last week where Flacco was trigger happy with the ball, they went back to basics and let the defense set the agenda scoring three TDs from defensive plays. They struggled against the West Coast offense of Hasselbeck and the Titans; but that performance looks like the exception rather than the rule. Ngata, Lewis, Reed and Suggs really are a frightening foursome, likened by the press to the Goth army spilling over the gates of Rome. The Cowboys-Lions game was also fantastic. Along with last week, really has been a season of incredible comebacks.

Seen a few games in the sun life stadium but to be honest i prefer to go watch Lebron James and Wade at the basketball! I dunno maybe if Dolphins won some games when i am there it would be more exciting but can't see that happening. They are lucky they can't get relegated. Saying that though i did get to see Barca play for the first time at Dolphins stadium this year against Guadalajara who won 4-1! Was quality. Like 70k people there. That match was more exciting then the nfl games i seen! I look out for their results though and try to sound interested when the old man in law talks about them. Well they would, it's their song (we just borrowed it from them). OWTS is, of course, a New Orleans marching funeral song from the late 1800s. Dirges were played on the way to the cemetery, but up tempo tunes on the way back in celebration of the departed ones life. OWTS proved so popular it was quickly adapted by the emerging New Orleans jazz players as part of their canon and spread around the US as jazz took off up the Mississippi and indeed eventually to foreign parts including a famous English seaport with a rather good football team ... DanW Posted 4 November, 2011 Share Posted 4 November, 2011 (edited) Just gotten into the NFL a bit, supported the Saints for years but not watched many games just looked out to see how they were doing on the NFL website etc. There's no other team for me, South Coast team, and they sing OWTS, couldn't really find a more ideal team to support to be honest! I really enjoy this reasoning and was wondering how many Soton folk would think like this. I'm glad there was at least one. I have no allegiance to New Orleans but from what I can tell from afar it's a decent-to-well run organization, it has a legit quarterback in Drew Brees (a must in today's NFL), a good owner, a wonderful fanbase, and an excellent coach in Sean Peyton. Their offseason move of Reggie Bush (out) for Darren Sproles (in) was initially considered good, then considered genius. I haven't checked in with them lately (perhaps you know more?) but despite last weekend's debacle against St. Louis (really? St. Louis? Wow.) they are still in 1st place and you must be enjoying the season. My team is the Cleveland Browns, and sadly that means eons of disappointment. This year proving no different. You won a 6-3 thriller against my Seahawks a couple of weeks back, so not all doom and gloom for the Browns!
