Delap - Saints record signing...

The question is would we know if we did buy someone for more than £4m? With all these 'undisclosed' fees or 'substantial' fees being quoted we may never find out!

It's a good point, however I think for most players being discussed lately, we would be able to make a very good educated guess.

I think some would be happier for us to pay 4.5m for players offered at 2m sometimes just to splash some cash. Still think fuller would have gotten a fairer ride if we'd paid 2m for him rather than 90k. Madness.

Nutshell

Especially about Fuller, who, although he didn't score many, improved our team massively. Yet at the time we just had loads of posts about how we needed a million pound striker like Clinton Morrison, not a cheapo ex-pompey player.

That mentality is still there.

You are rewriting history. He wasn't much cop for us TBH. The fact he was a pompey player also meant that we gave him less time than others.

After Burley took over he fired in some crucial goals that took us to safety, this was however only after he had a loan spell at Ipswich where he got his confidence back.

We didn't take to him, and he knew it. Had we given him a chance he would have been a steal.

Actually I disagree, the season he and Rasiak linked up they worked well together and personally I think if they'd stayed together the following season we would have either had a better chance of winning the play offs or even automatic. I don't think it was fan pressure that caused Fuller to leave though.

On the contrary...he wasn't popular at all when he joined, he played at the start of 05-06 when he clearly wasn't fit enough (and looked thoroughly miserable), and as a result he never ever won the fans around. Of course he scored some goals towards the end of that season, but the damage had already been done.

I'm sure he's come out and said as much to the press a little while ago? Can't remember precisely what he did say, but it wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement of our club.

Actually, when he came back from his loan and started scoring goals for Saints he was "Ohh Ricky Fuller, used to be a Skate but he's alright now" in a Crouch-stylee, as opposed to "Fuller-sh111t Fuller-sh1111t Fuller-sh111t" which is what he was getting before he went on loan.

He completely won the fans over with his form when returning from loan and it was quite a surprise to hear that he'd been sold at the start of the following season.

What is it with the obsession of SIZE... is it some sort of **** swinging constest? Who cares of how much we pay... what is more imporatnt is the quality and Personnally the LESS we pay the better.... I just remember when we brought in a certain M Svensson for under 2 mil - who was arguably one of teh top 6 CBs in the prem in 2002/3 - cheaper than Delap and far more integral to the first team as we saw when he got crocked... Seems size of transfer is something that appears to be some sort of compensation for a small tadger for some of you...

Not sure how this works ?

"Alright love, hop on and away we go..."

"Oh, er, is that it?"

"Yeah, but Saints have broken their transfer record"

"Ooooooooh... aaaaahhhh..." etc

You're joking right? He was ****e until he found his scoring boots some 8 months later into the season, we needed that at the start and as for improving our team massively you must of been watching someone else as this wasn't the fuller I saw.

The thing is he was ****e from the day he joined us, always looked unfit and disinterested and didn't start to play until after his loan spell at Ipswich. Fans sing songs in reaction to a players performance and Fuller's perfrmance when he joined us was dire at best, only when he came back from Ipswich did he improve, 6 goals in 6 games in the april.

He often didn't do himself any favours with his occasionally time-delayed reactions to through balls and closing defenders down, but equally, the post I was responding to initially claimed he "never" won the fans over, when he certainly did.

More likely

'' Alright love, hop on and away we go''

''oh is that it?''

'' yeah but saints have broken their transfer record''

'' not bloody football again...do I look like I care.. who do you expect to please with that?'

''myself!''
