Giordano Posted 30 August, 2011 Share Posted 30 August, 2011 IF we sign a starting centre forward and a starting centreback ( as opposed to squad players) what will the subs bench look like? My best guess is: I assume we will always have Bilko on the bench and that we always have a CB on the bench - perhaps Seabourne if a superstar CB is signed, which leaves three outfield positions, again I assume one must be a specialist central midfielder - probably Morgan or Chaplow atm, leaving space for two attacking players/forwards - probably a winger and a more central attacker? If we recruited a new superstar centre forward I assume that Connolly and De Ridder are those two players on the bench hence: Subs bench post transfer window assuming standard NA line-ups and formations: Bench: Bilko, Seabourne, Morgan, De Ridder, Connolly. Starting 11: Davies, Richardson, Fonte, Superstar new CB, Fox, Adam, Hammond, Cork, Guly, Lambert, Superstar new CF. Probable consequences : Connolly (dropped to subs), Seabourne (dropped to subs), Martin (won't make subs bench unless a CB is injured), Barnard (won't make subs bench unless a forward is injured), Chaplow (won't make subs bench unless a central midfielder is injured) Forte (won't make subs bench unless two forwards/wingers are injured, Harding (won't make subs bench unless N A changes his bench policy of not having substitute full backs), Dickson (ditto), Butterfield (ditto) Holmes (won't make subs bench unless a winger is injured), Radhi (wont make subs bench unless 2 CB's are injured), the rest of the youngsters - would need 2/3 injuries+ in their position to get on the bench and Puncheon won't make a bench unless you gave him some wood, nails, a saw and some carpentry glue and evwen then its doubtful.. Am i wide of the mark looking at these consequences? What are the implications for us loaning out some of the fringe players? What would Connolly say/do in particular- how can he be dropped for scoring every time he plays? It could be that Lambo is dropped if the new CF is better at doing what Lambo does???? Hmmmmmm...what do you think?
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 30 August, 2011 Share Posted 30 August, 2011 I think in the long term that's probably about right, but Adkins won't drop a player just because he's bought another in their position- look at Harding and Fox. There's no way a new striker would walk straight into the team, no matter how much we pay for them. He will have to settle for the bench until Connolly or Lambert stop performing and he proves he's worthy of replacing them. IMO.

Hmmmmmm...what do you think? Assuming that all the assumptions you make are dependent upon injuries, form, formation, suspensions etc.. you may be right but you may also be wrong ! Basically you are second guessing a second guess which renders your original thought process highly debatable although I reckon that few will bother to take up the challenge !! Chez Posted 30 August, 2011 Share Posted 30 August, 2011 (won't make subs bench unless N A changes his bench policy of not having substitute full backs), Fox is a fullback that makes the bench, so this isn't a policy.
Giordano Posted 30 August, 2011 Author Share Posted 30 August, 2011 Chez - you are right about Fox, and for-heavens-saint is also right about new players only getting on the bench to start with, but i think that the fb thing is only recent as a consequence of the 5subs rule. Before Fox I don't think it was Nigels normal plan to have a FB on a 5 man bench and i would be surprised to see Harding on the bench if Fox starts, leaving space for a CB, Morgan and only one forward. The fact that Cork, Seabourne, Martin and possibly even De ridder could play FB at a push leads me to think N A wont pick a specialist FB for the bench this season. It would be hard lines on Harding for example having gone from scoring a goal at LCFC to not making the first 16 though. Mind you Connolly is in the same boat- he scores he gets dropped in favour of a new CF - what would he think he has to do to get picked? I can't see David Connolly being dropped anytime soon after his start to the season whoever we buy as a forward. Perhaps that what is putting off some of our potential new aquisitionsin that department?

If we sign a left back when we already have about 5 of them I'm not sure anything's going to stop us adding elsewhere. Fox is a LB who also covers LM, we have RB cover as you say with Cork, so that's why we're not seeing Butterfield on the bench, as using a midfielder on the bench (and having Guly, Lallana and Cork on the pitch) gives us the flexibility to replace plenty of positions. We don't have any flexible centre-backs cover (other than possibly Cork) so one CB has to be on the bench.
