shurlock Posted 29 August, 2011 Share Posted 29 August, 2011 so, its different for us when we sign jack stephens..or leon best..but that is ok..as we are ripping off other clubs... Nope- take each case on its merits. I would just say that in our case there are more Gareth Bale type examples than Jack Stephens ones.

Agreed, we're certainly not shy in either spreading our net wide or picking up players already linked with clubs.
shurlock Posted 29 August, 2011 Share Posted 29 August, 2011 (edited) thats right..its ok when we rip of plymouth (he was in the first team squad last season)..so we cant take credit for him then.... Its not black or white: we either take all the credit for a player or no credit. Its about how much value add we add in each case- how far a player like Stephens progresses with us compared to how far he would have gone if he had stayed with Plymouth or had gone elsewhere. You're right, he is not as raw as a youngster who joins the club at 9, so there are limits to how much credit we can claim; but considering that he's only 16-17, made only a few sub appearances for a struggling L1 side and not got any international recognition at u-17s (not like that means much), he is still pretty raw. And as I say, there are more Gareth Bale/Theo/Oxo type examples than Jack Stephens ones. Edited 29 August, 2011 by shurlock
SaintRobbie Posted 29 August, 2011 Share Posted 29 August, 2011 Things can only get better… but there are only 6 places or so between the two teams! So, 'was it worth it Oxy is a good question', but only for this month methinks!
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 30 August, 2011 Share Posted 30 August, 2011 Comments on 5 Live about Arsenal signing a kid who is not ready for Premier League football were about right. He should have stayed with us a while longer. Not that I'm bothered now the cash is in the bank.
yorkie Posted 30 August, 2011 Share Posted 30 August, 2011 Am I the only one to feel sorry for the baptism of fire? It's all very well being part of a squad at Arsenal - but to be introduced at Old Trafford when already behind? What was his job to close down and support the midfield or provide an outlet and score a hat-trick? Clearly there were many who enjoyed the fact Arsenal got their arse kicked - but what will it do for his confidence? He's a bright lad and he will be stewing on it for ages! I didn't agreee with his motives and the timing of the move - but there is very little charity being expressed on here towards a potentially great English player. Chin up AOC - your time will come - one day!
Marsdinho Posted 30 August, 2011 Share Posted 30 August, 2011 I'm just surprised AOC advisor's (his Dad) are so out of touch with football. Suggesting to your son that he would be better off signing for Arsenal over Man Utd (even Liverpool are a better prospect these days) in this current football climate, is tantamount to child abuse. Mark Chamberlain is so out of touch he makes Houllier's attempt to resurrect his old Liverpool team at Villa look cutting edge.
ibizasaint Posted 30 August, 2011 Share Posted 30 August, 2011 I think AW showed incredibly bad judgement sending AOC on in those circumstances. He must have great faith in him.. Personally i hope that Alex does go on to become a great player.... yes, he followed the bright lights, but we got a very good deal for a 17 yr old who may or not go onto live upto his potential. I pay very little attention to ex-saints achievements at other clubs, but hope that one day he will be a shining light for England!!!

So, 'was it worth it Oxy is a good question', but only for this month methinks! Just on wages alone he must think its worth it now, Although his twitter account suggests that he went to the Arse for footballing reasons and not to chase money at Man City and the like. The only reason he has had a debut so soon is down to the lack of players available to Wenger, so will be resigned to life in the reserves for a while to come once the injury's are back and new signings are in. I would of thought he fully expects that and still thinks he is in the right place for the future of his career. Now what would be funny is if the Arse have such a bad season with more injurys and players not settling that they end up on the losing side of a relegation fight while we win promotion to the Prem. If that somehow miraculasly happened I wonder what his twitter account would be saying then?
Alain Perrin Posted 30 August, 2011 Share Posted 30 August, 2011 Surely this thread should be entitled Oxo up the ar$e? Which is either illegal, or a sex act involving gravy granules - or probably both.
Junior Mullet Posted 30 August, 2011 Share Posted 30 August, 2011 I laughed when we sold him to Arsenal for reported £12-£15m and I am laughing harder now. Wenger has lost the plot - the wheels have come off of his Plan A and he has no Plan B. Oh dear. Never mind Arsene, we might be able to find you a job at our accademy in the coming weeks. Never mind relegation, it would be a huge blow for them if they fail to make the Champions League as they almost did this year - top 4 will be Manure, Chelski, Citeh and Liverpool. Having said that I would love to see them involved in a relagation battle. Hey, that might even bring back my faith in the English game.

sammysaint Posted 3 September, 2011 Share Posted 3 September, 2011 Wenger is a fantastic coach, but he annoys me how he seems as so he doesn't want to buy British players, they lack a typical british CB, i expect in Jan they would go back for Cahill whos now worth 2-3 mill more after that goal last nite, otherwise there finish 5th or 6th and lets be honest that extra 3 mill we are due is down his and Arsenals success so i would like them to win a cup of some kind like FA Cup or Champs League (wont happen i know). shurlock Posted 6 September, 2011 Share Posted 6 September, 2011 (edited) He was capped for the under 21's whilst he was at Saints. And you also know that it was a v.v. under-strength side - in other words, it is quite likely that under normal circumstances, he would not have been picked. Monkeyboy Posted 6 September, 2011 Share Posted 6 September, 2011 MLG I never said he wasn't capped. I just said its funny how he's gone from a fringe squad player to a "must play" player all of a sudden despite playing next to no first team football at the Ar$e.
