VectisSaint Posted 28 August, 2011 Share Posted 28 August, 2011 These threads are so stupid. The kid will have tripled his wage and set himself up for life. It was a no brainer. Didn't have to go to Arsenal to triple his wages (bet he's more than tripled them by the way). He could have probably elected to go to other Prem teams, Manure and Liverpool were certainly sniffing around, but they probably would have waited a bit longer before spending 15m on an untried kid, and unlike Arse would probably have realised that there were other, more important priorities. It is a shame for the lad in a way, he could get completely lost with Arse this season as they are really going to struggle big time. Still, not sure he would have got into our team at the moment anyway.
Saint J 77 Posted 28 August, 2011 Share Posted 28 August, 2011 Felt sorry for him because he was essentially thrown to the wolves on his debut. A lot of promising players could have been mentally broken today. Not our problem now though is he? As soon as a promising player leaves Saints I stop caring about their progress. I am sure he will not be broken from one Sub performance though, no matter hw bad the team performance was.

The margin for error is miniscule in the prem - you make a mistake, you get roasted. NA banged on about creating an environment in which young players could take risks and not worry about failing. That's exactly what players like Oxo need. Fergy has done a pretty good job at shielding young players and sticking by them but there are limits to what you can do in the premiership/Big 4 fishbowl. No coincidence that most who have actually made it at man u have also done a stint in the championship or at a less high profile club.

Under Weststand Posted 29 August, 2011 Share Posted 29 August, 2011 I for one still can't believe his old man put his son into this situation at Arsenal (purely financial decision) . He was on a loser from the start yesterday, looked like he didn't have a clue in team that was totally shell shocked. Poor decision by Wenger to throw him into that situation. Unfortunately OXO has to live with the decision he & his advisers have made for him. Yes he may be financially secure, but I don't see him enjoying his football for 3/4 years at Arsenal. He didn't want to stay we got a good deal so we both move on, end of story.

CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 29 August, 2011 Share Posted 29 August, 2011 The English language is a wonderful thing, and just the right word exists for explaining why a Saints fan might feel just a little sorry for this youngsters horror debut at Old Trafford. Empathy n. the power of understanding and imaginatively entering into another person's feelings. Obviously a concept too alien to their thought processes for some on here to grasp. AOC was (in my view) ill-advised to leave this club when he did as both his football, and emotional, development would have been better served with one more season here. What may be called the 'set up for life' argument holds little water as (barring some unlikely career ending injury) he will certainly play in the Premier League before very long anyway. But like many before him, the lure of the 'big city lights' was just too strong. As I see it this common failing of youth does not justify the hostility directed at him. Mature fans should readily understand by now that although we as fans might 'live & breathe' Southampton Football Club, to most of our players it remains merely their employer - not the love of their life. Good point, everyone talks about his eye for young players but no one ever mentions the word poach. No one ever mentions the fact that Wenger's "genius" relies on other people's scouting. Paul Merson mentioned it but Wenger's formation for that games was a joke, you can't go to Old Trafford with a 433 and play young inexperienced boys, he was lucky they scored 2. Arsenal are a joke, they've known they were going to lose Fabregas and Nasri and yes they got good money for them, but they got it with weeks left on the transfer window.. Now doubt, long term, they'll be fine but this season is a wash out and the damage that game will have on some people's confidence could prove to be far more damaging... Chapel end charlie. I take your point > He chose to leave this club because he thought the grass was greener on the other side and was wrongly advised by his father to go to a big club. He shopuld have stayed for another season with us for his own development. I remember speaking to theo's dad at an away game shortly before he left us. he said that theo was at the best club to develop as a player, as a person and to not let things go to his head. A few weeks later he joined arse. The point Im making is that arse might be a big club but it doesnt necessarily bring the best out in a person re their upbringing. I expect AOc to be farmed out in the not too distant future. Also had arse not had so many players suspended I doubt AOC would have been on the pitch. But as others have said hes made his bed and he can go and lie in it. Hes moved,on hes an ex player who played for us for a very brief period. hes gone but will not be missed. After being hammered 8-2, I very much doubt that the Gooner forums are full of rounded assessments this morning!!!!! As for the OPs question, then I think one drubbing and even a couple of seasons rebuilding won't mean it was a poor move. He's wedged up for life, playing in the top flight with a club that with a good record with young players (even if they poach some of them) and so is at One of the best clubs he could be with regards developing his potential. From a Saints point if view he's gone and we've moved in. Edited 29 August, 2011 by um pahars
