Red Posted 27 August, 2011 Share Posted 27 August, 2011 Seen them all very regularly, and for me Niemi by a country mile! Others were/are excellent as well but I feel we saw the best of Niemi whilst at Saints (may also be true for Davis, but with all due respect he is not better than the big Fin). BTW - reminds me of the Scottish radio caller about Neimi and whether he was Scottish / "Finished" etc. - LMFAO - still laughing now thinking about it - anyone still have the link - absolute classic !!!! Big Ron fan Posted 27 August, 2011 Share Posted 27 August, 2011 Kelvin is several leagues below the others in ability, as evidenced by his one disasterous season in the Premier League with Sunderland. I don't think anyone who has seen the other 3 play could possibly group Kelvin with them.
Dimond Geezer Posted 27 August, 2011 Share Posted 27 August, 2011 Shilts, no contest. When he was with us he was rated as the best keeper in the world, and despite being great keepers in their own right that's not something that was ever said about Niemi orFlowers. Much as I like Super Kelv he's not in the same class as the aforementioned. We've been very lucky at Saints to have had some magnificent keepers through our doors, some (like Budgie, Grob, Woods & Bessant were on the wane when they played for us, although on their day & certainly prevoiusly in their careers they were fantastic keepers. sebastian firefly Posted 27 August, 2011 Share Posted 27 August, 2011 niemi was good shilton was amazing like comparing joey barton to maradonna not only was shilton our best i truly beleive he was the best EVER keeper in a all time world team i cant think of anyone to rival him
SuperMikey Posted 27 August, 2011 Share Posted 27 August, 2011 Only seen Niemi and Davis play, but Shilts is regarded as one of the all-time greats. From my generation it would easily be Niemi - miles better than Kelvin.
Red Posted 27 August, 2011 Share Posted 27 August, 2011 Struggling with that if you had seen them all regularly but put Neimi ahead of Shilton Shilts was class no doubt - what I meant was that was that Shilts probably had his best period whilst at Notts F, where as IMHO Neimi had his best spell with us. Also in terms of how each of them played and more importantly achieved for us (Saints) then it's a close call but I think AN just edges it. Close call, and just my view and all that - wouldn't mind either of them back - in their prime of course (which with Shilton was not with us - that's all). Shilton was England's number one for the whole of his Saints career, plus most of his Derby career after he left us. He was the world's best at the time. Niemi was a great keeper but could never have been described as the world's best.
St_Tel49 Posted 27 August, 2011 Share Posted 27 August, 2011 Shilton was England's No 1 for years so I don't see how it can be anyone else. Toss up between Niemi and Flowers for 2nd. (btw - according to WGS it was Lowe who bought Niemi when he (WGS) wanted some Eastern European guy)
miserableoldgit Posted 27 August, 2011 Share Posted 27 August, 2011 Shilton was vastly overrated IMO. Niemi for me. Really??? Hope you have read the rest of this thread. Shilts for me but we have been blessed with some great "onion bag protectors" over the years.
Saint-Fred Posted 27 August, 2011 Share Posted 27 August, 2011 Another one for Shilts and he played in a time where there was a glut of real top class goalies yet he was still the best in the world. Liked Niemi a lot, a great keeper, but IMO he wasn't quite the best in the league at the time and there wasn't the same talent around as when Shilton played. St Chalet Posted 27 August, 2011 Share Posted 27 August, 2011 And having watched all of the goalkeepers listed Shilts by a country mile, followed by Niemi, followed by the other two.

Surfin' Saint Posted 28 August, 2011 Share Posted 28 August, 2011 It would have to be Shilton based on ability. I do like Davis and will always be a legend in my books with the way he was during the whole take over, the loyalty etc that he showed
