EDL marches in Tower Hamlets have been banned and all in London for 30 days. What happened to live and let live and freedom of speech FFS? I am sure some of you will be outraged at this infringement of human rights. Can't be arsed to post the link but it's on sky news for those of you chomping at the bit to protest to the local MPs about this discriminating behaviour.

I think you'll find Rich that even the lefties, myself included, believe that the EDL marchers should have the same rights of protest as everyone else, regardless of whether we like or support their ideas or beliefs.

Personally I think everyone should be warned to look out for the Muslamic ray guns.

I love this musical representation.

Case closed then. Using the logic of 70s music we don't need no education either. Ban all schools.

The problem with the EDL is that the Liberal Elite look down their noses at patriotism. I can't wait to escape this country for a piece of Little England. This article perfectly illustrates the point and why Britain has gone to the dogs.

Don't confuse patriotism with nationalism. There is a difference between wearing an England shirt and flying a flag during the World Cup for example, and marching through the streets chanting "Muslim scum" or whatever

We end up with the worst of all worlds: an unquestionably Spanish bit of land continues to be overseen by Britain, but only due to Britain’s desire to avoid controversy rather than anything resembling national vigour or vision.

Sounds perfect for you Dune. I just pray everyone like you want to leave these shores as wel, fingers crossed.

As per normal you confuse patriotism with nationalism.

I'm a proud patriot but I'm not a nationalist. It's quite easy to be left wing and still be proud of your country and heritage, millions are.

Found it a rather strange place when I went there a couple of weeks ago. Obviously read, heard and seen much about it, but it turned out to be nothing like I was expecting. Some parts of it looked British, whilst other parts continental (particulalry the newer buildings), they drove on the right and it certainly wasn't like the Little England I was expecting.

Although the first language was supposed to be English, the majority of conservations between people were undertaken in Spanish (a few in a hybrid dialect). I also got a sense that those who I met weren't British nor did they have any desire to be British, but instead referred to themselves as Gibraltarians or Llanitos. When I spoke to some the overwhelming reason for remaining "British" didn't seem to be a sense of history, loyalty or love of the Mother Country, but instead a desire to benefit from economic success of the enclave and they were constantly referring to the fact that right across the border unemployment was a major problem. I certainly interpreted it as being a flag of economic convenience.

tis an absolute dump IMO

But not a bad place to spend a day. The siege tunnels were impressive as were the old town fortifications. Good for history buffs, but wasn't impressed with much else.

They seemlessly switch between English and Spanish mid sentence. This is where the term speaking 'gibberish' came from.

The word and meaining of Gibberish/Jabberish/Geberish predates our occupation of Gibraltar in the early 1700's (sounds a nice story though).

You might not like it but it probably has its origins in either an Irish dialect or an Islamic Scientist.

Best not use the question in one of your quiz nights then.

Best not or I'll quote this from a piece that predates our occupation of Gibraltar by about a century:

"And as when bats, amid the far recess

Of some great cave, flit gibbering and squeak low"

As a fully-fledged member of the Liberal Elite, I despise the EDL. However, they've got as much right to protest as anyone else, so this ban shouldn't be in place unless there are serious security risks (which tbh, there probably are when a march involves the EDL and an impoverished, multi-cultural area of London). Recent events may dictate what people can and can't do in the way of public protesting for a while...

Even by your lazy standards, this is poor stuff. But in case you need to see an example of the EDL exercising its free speech, take a look at this.http://www.twitpic.com/5exbfg

I didn't say I agree with their message, just they have a right to march. I know the thought of the EDL beings on a cold sweat to you but do you not agree they have a right to make their voice heard, regardless of if you like it or not?

Surely on the basis used to ban this march Notting Hill carnival should also have been axed this year, always trouble there.

Either you didn't look at that clip or you approve of such 'freedom of speech'.

I absolutely hate the EDL and everything they say and stand for.

However, they should not be denied a voice ever. Freedom of speech must be total and span all views, even those which frankly disgust most of us.

This. Give them enough rope and they'll hang themselves (metaphorically speaking)

Having a problem reading today? I was quite clear that i didn't say i agreed with their message. Or is freedom of speech only allowed if its what you agree with?

I'm sure rickety old bridge will be the first to highlight any fringe elements, but with such a widely supported movement there are bound to be some that detract from the peaceful majority.

More to the point, no discrimination against the EDL, but let's not let the facts get in the way of conjecture!

Exactly. Just look at the rise and fall of the BNP over the last say 5 years. Some people gave them a chance, they aired their views on a national scale and now thankfully, everyone is rejecting them. Electoral collapses left, right and centre.

Do keep up Andy. UKIP are the party of choice for those of us on the right. They are growing at about the same pace as the Lib Dems are declining.

What's that got to do with anything I just said?! The problem with UKIP is they are a one man show, they have little depth beyond Nigel Farage and if they want to do better at elections they need to sort it out pronto. And I know you will probably come out with lots of names now, but to the general public they are anonymous. Just look at Lord Pearson... Also, the fact the conservative party exists doesn't help. You need PR really.

But I was talking about the BNP, not UKIP though if you want to associate those two parties I welcome you to it, it will only make UKIP's brand toxic.

Also, are you suggesting there is a link between Lib Dem decline and UKIP rise?!??!

And the Liberal Democrats have had a recovery in opinion polls lately. They were on 17% in the latest ICM poll.
