iansouthstander Posted 26 August, 2011 Share Posted 26 August, 2011 (edited) The last time we played a team managed by SGE we were top of Div 1. Gothenburg were the visitors to The Dell back in 1982. I remember seeing SGE walking down the touchline. We drew 4-4 and amongst our goal scorers was a Dutch fella called La Ling . Apart from being the gimp in Carlito's Way , anybody on here know what happened to him ?. Edited 26 August, 2011 by iansouthstander
LainPain Posted 26 August, 2011 Share Posted 26 August, 2011 I'd take a 4-4 tomorrow.

buctootim Posted 26 August, 2011 Share Posted 26 August, 2011 Except that was a completely different division back then. Still, amazing co-incidence though. Here we are, almost exactly 29 years and a few months and a couple of days later and totally different teams are playing in a totally different division, at a totally different ground - yet one of the managers is the same. Amazing!
Doctoroncall Posted 26 August, 2011 Share Posted 26 August, 2011 Didn't we play norrkoping and wasn't it 2 2 draw and I don't think la ling played for us (or them) and Sven wasn't the manger.
SaintSparky Posted 26 August, 2011 Share Posted 26 August, 2011 We played Gothenburg on February 22nd 1982 in a friendly at The Dell, the result was 4-4; scorers for Saints were Armstrong with two and the aforementioned La Ling with two. No idea who La Ling was, he did not play a competitive game for the Saints first team during that season. The Norrkoping fiasco was in the September of the same year (15th at home, 29th away) in the UEFA cup.

buctootim Posted 26 August, 2011 Share Posted 26 August, 2011 There was a La Ling playing for Ajax at the time. No idea if he played for Saints in that game somehow.
SNOWY Posted 26 August, 2011 Share Posted 26 August, 2011 La Ling was a dutch international striker who was on trial. No idea why we didnt sign him

Bit of a 'ball juggler' etc, on trial with us but obviously not pursued. Norrkoping was indeed a fiasco.
The Majestic Channon Posted 26 August, 2011 Share Posted 26 August, 2011 Not long after moving to sweden i found one of my work mates played for Norrköping in the 2 games v saints. he had a quite funny story about Bally and Steve williams. Wasn't Sven manager of Gothenburg when we played them in Bally's 1st match as manager in 94 too? Matty scored 2 corkers.
AussieDog Posted 26 August, 2011 Share Posted 26 August, 2011 I remember watching that game and my standout memory of it was LaLing jumping for a header and seeming to be 2 feet above the crossbar when he headed the ball. Was really impressed and felt sure he would be signed. What's even more remarkable is that I can barely remember what I ate for dinner yesterday, so to have that memory from nearly 30 years ago is a little bit surreal! ....and yes, it probably wasn't really two feet above the crossbar, but it was it was way ahead of everyone else (and I think he was about 6 feet four too)
