Best Soton Fish and Chip Shop?

I've been going to the chippy in Netley for over 30 years and have never had reason to change.

Netley chip shop after Sea Scouts on a Friday night - chips 6p, pea fritter 4p, pickled onion 2p, lo the boy that had saved up 12p over the week; to live like a king after scouts on a Friday night.

They also did 'scraps' which was basically a bag of fried batter off-cuts which you soaked in S+V and which cost 1p !!!! Bliss on a cold Friday night in Netley.

Happy days (1971-'74), a wholly more innocent time than today!

I think the Codfather is way over rated despite all the award claims, we have used it twice and both times it was average at best.

Totally agree. Overpriced for what you get and chips nothing to write home about.

The chip shop at top of Thor hill still do the massively oversized portions for 1.85. Good chips too. Some others in the area have started using boxes and just fill in the gaps around the burger leaving you with hardly any chips.

Mikes in West End is quality, turned into Blue Fish or some other s*** recently and were properly stingey. Luckily was bought out by Mike who is the original owner's (Frank) son and back on form last time I went there a month or so ago.

Codfather is run by J Henrys (Hedge End Village), average at best and is basically a manopoly as there is no where else to go in HE unless you drive to Thornhill and go to Speedys (not sure it's called that now but was when I lived in Harefield as a nipper) or Mikes in West End. Only good thing about J Henrys was hanging around outside as a 14/15 year old chatting up any bit of skirt that moved and taking them into HE Rec'.... The things girls would do for a bag of chips on a freezing cold Friday night!

Anyway, be grateful, when I moved to London I realised how blessed we are in SO as all their old chippys have been bought out by chinese or Turks and turned into generic takeaway s***.

I agree. I got fish and chips from there 2 weeks ago. First time since the old fella gave it up and it was gash compared to the old nosebag.

St James was bought by Nick Hannides, a solicitor from Shirley. Quality has gone down big time since he took over.
