I eat from both Triangle ones.

Charlies isnt as good as it was but I find it less greasy than the other. Both are very friendly.

Goodies are the most over-rated - v tight portions of chips.

The St Mary's Chippy is great although the curry sauce (and the chips too) aren't quite as good since they've been taken over.

Johnnie's at the bottom of Shirley High Street is very good as well. The large cod is simply enormous.

St. James Road, in the little parade of shops just down from the back of Kind Edwards school.

I have heard it is under new ownership now and whilst the portion sizes are still ridiculous (I still throw most of the chips away), the cod is smaller and a bit greasy compared to what it was like before. I could have just had a bad one though.

Nicks at Bishy.

Had some there about 3 months ago and I have to agree.

A big minus for the one at the top of Derby Rd in Eastleigh purely for the fact that some of the staff can't get an order exactly correct and then the moody owner throws a strop when you have the temerity to question why the order is wrong and maintain it's always the customer's fault!

She's saved me a fortune with her attitude.

My mate's Dad ran it until a year or so ago. He'd had a heart attack a couple of years before that and was told by the Doctor's to stop working but it wasn't until he split up with his wife that he sold it. He stupidly got rid of it on the cheap without telling anyone, mainly to annoy his wife. Really stupid considerig he's now back with her!

In the middle of all that somewhere they had a pretty decent win on the lottery. Around £250k I believe. I'm guessing that's one reason he sold it so cheap. Sad really because pretty much everyone I know has said it's gone downhill since.

The chippy in Lime Street used to be amazing when I lived there although it ever seemed to be open.

Agree about the one in St Mary's too. I remember once I was walking up to my mate's flat in Golden Grove eating a tasty portion of their chips when a bloke stopped me and asked if I'd heard someone get shot earlier.

Thats what I was going to say. Think its the oldest chippy in Soton.

I quite like the one on Millbrook roundabout as well, massive portions of chips, and a damned good battered sausage.

Mike`s in West End is VV good and clean. But the St Mary`s tray of chips covered in that home made garlic butter is the Nuts.

IMO you can suss out a good one by the standard of the Batter, Hard to tell by the chips (Type of Spuds, Time of year) A good clean, crisp and non greasy Beer batter MMnnn.

Is mikes the one that changed to deep blue sea (or suchlike) and started giving much smaller portions in boxes rather than wrapped?! Guessing it's gone back to being mikes, right?

Likewise, been going to Andys since I couldn't even see over the counter, was a shame when Andy passed away. For portion sizes Big Georges in St Denys/Portswood Road always give good value for money.

Nick's in Bishopstoke gets my vote too. I can vaguely remember it before it was called Nick's (it's been a chippy for as long as I can remember, probably for as long as the building's been there). It's been Nick's for well over thirty years now, and has always been excellent.

There's a good one on Victoria Road in Woolston, but it closes at 7pm most evenings. Very good haddock and chips there though, and I can never finish a small portion of their chips.

Hold On Hold A Second. This question only has one correct answer "St Mary's Chippy"

In St Marys St just up from the Joiners

Without a doubt the best portion of chips in the South trust me!

Always pop in there for a pea fritter after home games. People up north don't understand the delights of the pea fritter. Best chippy in Southampton years ago was the Appollo in Sholing where i grew up across the road from it. Huge queues on a friday teatime every week. You name it they did it in batter there. Sadly changed to a Chinese many years ago.

I agree. I got fish and chips from there 2 weeks ago. First time since the old fella gave it up and it was gash compared to the old nosebag.

Agree that Johnny's in Shirley has massive fish. The large cod is a monster. With the cost of cod going up all the time, it's nice to be able to feel like you're getting a decent portion. He used to have a shop on Burgess Rd, but sold up and moved to here,.

Yeah saw the sign up in there when I was still living in Bullar Road. A real shame. Glad his family decided to carry on with the business.

I've also have been going there since my Dad used to take me down and sit me on the counter. Also used to go there for lunch quite often when I was at Bitterne Park School. Whenever I'm back in the area, I pop in for some chips

Nipped into the one in Hedge End today (TJ Hooker's or something similar) and bought a large portion so I'd have some for my work colleagues to tuck into when I got back to work. £2.60, very generous portion.

Doused in vinegar with a sprinkling of salt. Mmmmmm.

So lovely in fact that the few that survived the journey were secreted for the drive to pick mrs h up from work. I feel like a stuffed pig now.

I can't understand why anyone would NOT have S&V on chips. In fact I was told years ago that the vinegar neutralises the fat they are cooked in, making a relatively healthy meal.

My first ever paid job was chipping spuds in a chip shop, had to quit when I broke a finger running into a wall in PE.

That's a lie actually, first paid job was 1 week as a paper boy, all the other paperboys would stuff comics, small toys, sweets etc in their sacks whilst the shop owner was counting out the papers, my conscience kicked in and I left rather than turn to a life of crime. True story.

What chipshop did you work in hamster?

I worked in the one in Netley from 1976-1980,after which my brother took over from me.I inherited the job from my cousin,so you could say it ran in the family.

The couple who ran it retired a few years back, which was a shame because it went downhill after that.
