Liam Fontaine - Update: Deal falls through

I seem to remember most fans reaction when we signed a certain Micheal Svensson...who? All transfers have an element of risk, some players who seem great pon paper never deliver, others who have maybe had a toubled season at their previous clubs shine in a new environment - so us fans should have more of an open mind TBH.

I for one, like the unknown, the less predictable nature of thes ethings... its what makes sport/football interseting to see how playesr develop, evolve and join the side... I also find it quite funny how just because of a 4 wins at the we are seeing early signs of moaning because we are 'not getting players we need if we are serious about promotion'.... talk about sudden changes in ecxpectation... though we would have been happy with mid table at the start of the season... LOL

Well we put a bid in for Fontaine so he must have been high up the list. Don't forget the Jemal business either. It's one of two big weaknesses in our squad still to be addressed if we are serious about a good season and promotion. I have to say that Cork aside and since Adkins has arrived, I've seen a lot of speculation linking us with quality and in the main we have signed a lesser player (or no player at all!).

I fully expect to get abuse because of that opinion but I have roundly applauded Adkins and Cortese for our start to the season and Adkins is changing my mind and maybe he can be the long term solution but I do have to question how we seem to be going about some of our transfer dealings. Agents on twitter saying we are difficult to deal with, rumours that the Cork deal was almost derailed when his agent was kicked out of the board room (although it is a coup to get him), being linked to numerous players last January only to end up with loans and Forte on a four year deal, being linked with quality defenders to have them turn us down or us pull out at the last minute and p*ss them off (Ward and Gorkss) and then being linked with quality proven strikers like Rodriguez, Ebanks Blake and Maynard only to end up with???

As I said, abuse will be forthcoming from the same faces but I believe it is a valid point worthy of discussion no matter how well we are doing on the pitch (something I am very pleased with the club for I will again emphasise.)

Drip drip ferking drip, your negativity is get really boring now. 12,000 post of 'anti' everything Saints, do us a favour, and quit watching.

I hope so. I will be one of the first on here saying what great signings we have made if we get in a real quality CB and striker. You can see how it looks though, that we have passed up quality with Gorkss and then tried to get a player in who has failed a medical. Lets hope whoever we get in is better than both options.

Make your mind up man, last week you wanted backup, now you're droning on about quality!

And when Adkins said he wanted quality - was he droning on as well?

No one can argue about performance when we have 4 straight wins but if the club is still looking for signings, surely they should be better, not just more squad players. Its already been pointed out that so far, the only signing who is a regular starter is Cork. There is a huge sum of money in the bank from the Chamberlain deal but whereas Chamberlain was a regular starter, de Ridder isn't. Maybe it would be hard to replace a £12/£15m player with someone better and maybe there are other priorities such as the CB and Striker we keep hearing we are bidding for, but someone like Fontaine could turn out to be just another Seaborne, will get some games but not be first name on the sheet. As for the striker, its fine as long as Lambert and Connolly are fit and without bookings but sooner or later we do need the third striker. Maybe it could be LB when he regains fitness, but if he isn't available from October it will be too late. All this does seem to justify questions being asked, mainly because the club appear to be in the market to buy but are not having much success.

It could also be that Cortese pulled the plug because the press were being briefed by BC, he doesn't work that way. Elliott Ward comes to mind. Just a thought.

What makes you so sure Cortese "pulls the plug" if the press get wind of a transfer? It makes little sense to act like that, as it doesn't really matter and I have yet to see any evidence that is how Cortese acts.

Twitter is not in any way definitive. Even if it is, turning down Gorkss because we have someone better only for that person to fail the medical is not great.

You hope that's the truth as it suit your anti-Saints agenda.

In fact, the ignore button has come into play.

A shame this has fallen through, oh well. Onwards and upwards.

The Elliott Ward incident had crossed my mind too, especially after seeing the reports on Sky and the BBC before the club had revealed our interest before anything official.

So no Gorkss or Fontaine and still an area of weakness in the squad. Not great...

Exactly, this is the negative side to leaving vital signings so late in the day. Hope we have another ace up our sleeves. Failing that we will have to make do with what we have got and hope for luck to help us our, ie no injuries or suspensions.

Not really; well, certainly not any more than last year. We have Fonte, Seaborne, and Martin currently available, with Jaidi to come back from injury. Hardly short of numbers.

It's the quality issue I'm more worried about, I don't see Seaborne or Martin (yet) as a long term solution, and its a complete unknown whether Jaidi's legs are up to it.

Why is it a blatant lack of football knowledge to look at the reactions from many Bristol City Fans and give an initial reaction as underwhelmed by a signing whilst being fully prepared for that opinion to change once they have had a few games under their belt for SFC? What is the point of a forum if you can't give your initial reaction to a signing? Why are you so aggressive toward any sort of negative opinion?

Why not just wait and judge for yourself?

I am. This is an initial reaction. If following a signing everyone just said no comment until they had played a number of games then there would be no need for a forum. Are you seriously telling me you never have any opinion on a player we sign before you see them play for us?

Are people not allowed to speculate on how good a particular signing might be? Or must all such conversation be limited until they've played a game for us? It's a weird world if that's true, especially on an internet football forum.

That is entirely my point, and yet somehow that is construed as writing someone off before I have seen them! Madness.

Quite right. If someone who had never even heard of Fontaine until two days ago said "this sounds like a brilliant signing" none of these happy clappers would pick him up on it of course.

Initial reactions are allowed.

Having not really heard of Fontaine, Gorks or Jay-Rod until we were linked with them and being a tiny bit aware of Waghorne as I live in the East Midlands. I am excited by the prospect of us signing Gorks and Rodrigues, and not excited at all by us signing Fontaine or Waghorne.

The tedious happy clappers would permit my opinion on two of the players but slate me for my opinion on the other two, even though my opinion on all four are based on the same level of ignorance, basically a little bit of reading up.

Funny that.

Yep exactly this. It's what happens all the time on here. You aren't allowed to have an opinion unless it is a positive one.

You talk of "ignorance" and "reading up", yet you can't spell "Waghorn", "Rodriguez" or "Gorkšs" correctly, despite claiming to be aware of them.

Funny that... ;)
