Liam Fontaine - Update: Deal falls through

Why is it a blatant lack of football knowledge to look at the reactions from many Bristol City Fans and give an initial reaction as underwhelmed by a signing whilst being fully prepared for that opinion to change once they have had a few games under their belt for SFC? What is the point of a forum if you can't give your initial reaction to a signing? Why are you so aggressive toward any sort of negative opinion?

90% of Bristol fans are gutted to lose him from what I have read!

So no Gorkss or Fontaine and still an area of weakness in the squad. Not great...

Are they the only 2 possible players we could be interested in?

Come on even for you that's a bit short sighted, if he was a crock then fair play to the club.

That's just untrue. Just look at their forums. Most are indifferent, and when they are bothered, it's mostly because they think they don't have much of a replacement.

I was basing it on twitter and general forums. Never trust a clubs own forums, their you will find the most bitter....

I have spoken to a lot of their fans about him on twitter, whose opinions I respect, and they would have been gutted, had he left.

I realise that but it seems we have lost out on at least two targets for whatever reason (Jemal and Fontaine) and turned down another who seems very capable (Gorkss). We may be onto our fourth of fifth choice soon and that isn't great.

Jemal through work permit, Fontaine through risk of injury and we didn't want Gorkss it seems.

Not really an issue with any with them from my end.

NOt a dig at LF as I have no knowledge of why the deal has not worked out - could be any number of reasons.... but I suspect there will be more than one potential tranfer where players believe that they can dictate personal terms.... I doubt they get far with the Don LOL.

I suspect we have players on contracts that are more heavily weighted to wards performance based rewards - proove yorself first before trying to upset the wage structure. We have seen many new contracts this summer and it woudl not surprise me if there are some pleasing bonus terms and loyalty clauses in there, rather than stupid basic weekly wages... I know in the past many have complained about a wage structure that is too rigid or too tight, but i for one see a squad that is performing well, is enjoying being part of something and is happy to sign new deals... good times. ;-)

NA will have other targets.

Well we put a bid in for Fontaine so he must have been high up the list. Don't forget the Jemal business either. It's one of two big weaknesses in our squad still to be addressed if we are serious about a good season and promotion. I have to say that Cork aside and since Adkins has arrived, I've seen a lot of speculation linking us with quality and in the main we have signed a lesser player (or no player at all!).

I fully expect to get abuse because of that opinion but I have roundly applauded Adkins and Cortese for our start to the season and Adkins is changing my mind and maybe he can be the long term solution but I do have to question how we seem to be going about some of our transfer dealings. Agents on twitter saying we are difficult to deal with, rumours that the Cork deal was almost derailed when his agent was kicked out of the board room (although it is a coup to get him), being linked to numerous players last January only to end up with loans and Forte on a four year deal, being linked with quality defenders to have them turn us down or us pull out at the last minute and p*ss them off (Ward and Gorkss) and then being linked with quality proven strikers like Rodriguez, Ebanks Blake and Maynard only to end up with???

As I said, abuse will be forthcoming from the same faces but I believe it is a valid point worthy of discussion no matter how well we are doing on the pitch (something I am very pleased with the club for I will again emphasise.)

According to that Latvian poster, we pulled out of the Gorkss deal at the last minute because we thought we had someone better. If that was Fontaine and he then failed a medical then it wasn't that we didn't want Gorkss.

Have patience, you will be pleasently surprised by next week.

That's all i'm saying.

I hope so. I will be one of the first on here saying what great signings we have made if we get in a real quality CB and striker. You can see how it looks though, that we have passed up quality with Gorkss and then tried to get a player in who has failed a medical. Lets hope whoever we get in is better than both options.

Calm down Hypo - these things happen. It could be worse, we might be Ipswich with 12 goals conceded in a week bringing in Sonko to sort it out...

Sure we will bring in a centre back!

Of course it could be worse, but don't rest on your laurels is what I say. We have made such a fantastic start that it would really be a shame to see us missing out on fantastic targets which could cost us. Our great start makes it even more important IMO that we get the two signings we need in quickly and that they are of the required standard because we can really make a go of promotion this year.

And if what i say turns out to be true, it will be some decent bluffing.

although we are doing a 'sensible' thing by not rushing in.. spending too much money etc. we still need a CB and ST at least, and we have only have one week left of the transfer window.

There is still the loan window, there will be a few in the shade at a number of Prem Clubs.
