Absolutely, loads were gutted. But that's not the point I was trying to make. I was suggesting that most fans will typically seek to play down the loss of any player or justifiy his departure by saying he was overrated, no matter how much it stretches reality. Call it sour grapes, denial whatever you want. But this bias is everywhere (look at some of the assessments of Oxo on here) and its important to factor it in when putting weight on the views of opposing fans.

Of course you factor it in, but reading other fans comments you get an overall flavour of their opinion of a player. One great way to do it is to search for the player on that forum, then you get unbiased views from a few months previously. Gorkss for example had fantastic reviews from November last year from QPR fans. Palace fans were gutted on their forum, as were Bristol Rovers forums.

OK you may get the odd people who play down their importance or say they are not needed, but you can still get a decent flavour of a player, as evidenced by the reactions to the signings of a number such as Fonte, Lambert and Cork etc.

Criticising past transfers and them turning out good/bad has zero bearing on the success of any future transfers.

Being underwhelmed doesn't mean much, just as many underwhelming signings do well. In fact for us, the more 'whelming' ones often seem to struggle more.

Not since Cortese has come in. In the last two years, signings that have been seen as a major loss and decent by opposition fans on average, have been decent for us. Opposition fans views have been a good barometer (see S****horpe fans reaction for Forte and Exeter for Seaborne also.)

Shades of Jose Fonte?

Time wil tell I guess. I remember when Thomas was uveiled that Burley said it was incredible the price you had to pay for an English centre back. Basically he was saying he was way over-valued, and so it turned out.

Did you not see his goal against Ipswich?

It doesnt matter what we fans think about a player comming to us. What is important is what the manager thinks about improving

the team. he does not want a prima donna who is going to upset the apple cart. we have had our fair share of these over the years.

Nigel knows what he wants for the team and if the price is right he will get his player/s

Yes we can discuss the merits of potential players. warnock at QPR thinks puncheons the man for them , but lots of you on here

think hes crap.

If fontaine signs . it will be because he can do a job for us and not because hes the only one available.

While Thomas didn't really perform to great levels here, his goal vs Ipswich and winning penalty in the JPT more than paid the fee back imo. I was gutted for him when he missed out on a place in the side at Wembley.

With the sale of AOC, I must admit, I was hoping for a couple of 'marquee' signings.

I live in hope.

I think we will be satisfied by the end of the window.

Just a hunch.

is he better than Seabourne? doubt it

I don't think he has to " be better " than Danny s. Surely the general idea is to have good cover in all positions in case of;

injury, suspensions, loss of form etc. If he's " as good as " Seaborne then we have a good deal.....

Typical SWF bedwetting by a few. Relative merits.

Seaborne has previously only played in League 1 and lg 2 for Exeter and been a stand in for Saints.

Gorkss has spent the past five years playing in the Championship and is 29.

Fontaine has spent the past five years playing in the Championship, is 25 and left footed.

I hope so. Getting in a cracking attacking option would soften the blow of losing Gorkss.

What is your idea of cracking?

Maynard i assume?

By all accounts, we didn't "lose" Gorkss.

One of my friends who is a Bristol City season ticket holder just sent me this email when I asked about Fontaine. He is on holiday so wasn't aware of Saints interest. It seems to validate some of the other opinions about him. See comments below;

"Liam Fontaine - good 2nd defender if you have a dominant centre-half for him to play alongside. He's a good footballer - more Bobby Moore than Stuart Pearce or Terry Butcher.

He'd probably command a fee in the region of £250k-£300k. Don't tell me Saints are being linked with him! You must be delighted with the start you've made in the Championship!!!!!"

His estimation on price is a little concerning though...

Anybody else think it's a bit of a 'coincidence' that Sibley has gone all quiet AND JustMike isn't responding to the posts on here? Have they ever been seen together in the same room? Not by me.

Edit. JustMike just Pm'd me. Interesting stuff. Thanks J.

OK so it looks very likely we have signed him. Lets move on and hope for the best. Just one more signing does everyone think? Hopefully a significant striker purchase.

What's the latest Bendtner info?

"Move on and hope for the best?!?" Have a day off will you please? It is a shame the first half of your post is quite staggering because I agree that we could do with signing a striker, but I don't see why we need to go breaking the bank for one.

Been working in bristol today and spoke to some city season ticket holder friends of mine, and they were not happy he was leaving.

Yes but are they unhappy because they rated him or because he was the 'best of a bad bunch' (quoted from a City forum.)

I love all this 'underwhelmed' rubbish from the same people who were underwhelmed at Adkins appointment. Sorry if I don't share in your blatant lack of football knowledge.

The collective noun for them is "c**ts". Clueless ones at that.

Why is it a blatant lack of football knowledge to look at the reactions from many Bristol City Fans and give an initial reaction as underwhelmed by a signing whilst being fully prepared for that opinion to change once they have had a few games under their belt for SFC? What is the point of a forum if you can't give your initial reaction to a signing? Why are you so aggressive toward any sort of negative opinion?
