All quiet on the Weston front

It's been quiet on the transfer front pretty much for the last four months. Just people talking things up.

I was hoping for our intent to be shown over the summer with significant transfers but it is clear our ambition is to secure our place in this division, something that we will do, nothing more and nothing less.

Next year we will build a bit more. Remember this is only the third year of a five year plan.

Damn, turns out I agree with Dalek.

Its eerily quiet on the transfer front at the moment.

Calm before the storm or just nothing happening?

I expect the tide is out. When the tide is out in Weston it really is out, a long long way. Also being evening it probably is quiet on Weston front.

It may also be Quiet on the Western Front.

The anticipation of the event is always more exciting then the event itself.

Agree 100%. This is why Christmas Eve is my favourite day of the year, before the crap presents, family arguments and boredom set in on Christmas Day.

Very much doubt nothing is happening. Any rate we only need two players.

We don't need any players, but we would make room for two more if the right players became available on acceptable terms.

Four games in, only 1 team has scored more than Saints (Peterborough) and only 1 has conceded fewer (Derby). We're getting goals from all over the pitch (again) with Barnard still to come back from injury, and, in Jaidi's temporary absence, Seabourne is getting that missing "experience at nPC level" and hasn't let us down yet.

Long-term replacements for Jaidi and Connolly are not desperately urgent, but would be nice to have sooner rather than later.

Yes we do, we need a cb and a striker. If fonte and lambert picked up an injury then we really have no replacements.

I agree with you we need a centre back & a striker we need to find a long term partner for Fonte another centre back with quality & a bit of experience.

We have to sign a striker it is asking a lot for DC to play week in week out bound to pick up a injury, Barnard is going to do some time imho so we will be without him, we dont have back up for Lambo so we do need a striker & a quality 1 that is pushing for a start.

With the start we have had & the way we are playing it would make sense to get the chequebook out & spend big, look how Hammond has raised his game since Cork arrived we need to bring in players that are going to compete & keep everybody on there game.

We are 2 signings away from a promotion winning squad imo, will be a statement of intent if we invest & I think we will

The fact is, Dalek, that you simply don't know that to be the case and are just speculating. Maybe NC has seen our great start and thinks we can go for promotion this year, and is working behind the scenes to do the deals that will facilitate that, because that is his way. He doesn't do his deals in public like Lowe used to and we only get to find out about them once they are completed - as it should be.

If no new faces have arrived by the end of the transfer window then, and only then, will I agree with your post above. But we know from what little snippets Adkins has given us that they are looking to bring in more players yet, and I would much rather we are patient about it and bring in the right players on suitable terms than to go out and hastily spend the AOC money just for the sake of it.

Let's not forget the loan window too. Surely we'll be getting our annual unknown player from Italy again?

OK, I will quote you on this at the end of August.

How about this start has surprised even Adkins and Cortese and they're having a rethink about whether to spend some money now to capitalise on this great start.

Originally happy with consolidating and then pushing on next year or year after, but having a rethink to see if they should look to do it quicker?????

Early days I know, but we have come out flying.

Please do.

If we don't sign anyone then you will triumphantly get to say "I told you so", and I will happily hold my hands up and accept it. But I cannot subscribe to your view that we are only looking to consolidate, which appears to be based purely on your opinion that because we aren't publicly shouting about potential transfers we therefore aren't looking to sign anyone. This is clearly false as Adkins has openly stated that potential deals have been in the pipeline. Some of them may have stalled and others may have fallen through completely, but to claim that "it is clear our ambition is to secure our place in this division" just because we haven't made any big signings yet is naive at best, and downright moronic at worst.

Of course everyone loves rumours and speculation about potential signings, but I personally like and respect the fact that Cortese prefers to do his business away from the spotlight of the media.

Don't think it means we have lost interest in Gorkyss.. (that's if he's interested in us?)... or any of the others rumoured...

The targets seem to be CCC level players and not paying £5 million for someone this season may be a sensible idea.

WHEN ...we win promotion there will be a big sorting of the "wheat fron the chaff " if we are to surivive in the Prem. long term, and if any of these guys are " up to it," then they will have been a very good deal, eh ?

If you look at how previous windfalls have been squandered by buying large quantities of average players that we've had to pay to get rid of, maybe NC and NA want to do things differently - 2 higher quality signings and then leave a bit spare. With respect to Dave Jones, who was otherwise excellent in the transfer market, look at the crud we wasted the Davies money on - Ripley, Hughes (was decent at DM but not what he was signed for), Marshall etc. Beattie turned to be an inspired signing but one out of six or seven isn't good. That said, Beattie's arrival still made it more successful than the waste of the Theo money by Burley. In fact, Burley wasted it so badly that we sold Jones and Bale and it still didn't make a dent in the debts that had wracked up!

So if NC and NA are taking the time before 31 August to get players that they want, that fit the existing group, that can play in the NPC as leading stars now but can also make the step up, then good on them. Just wish previous regimes - going back to Branfoot's waste of the Shearer/Flowers monies - had done the same!
