This is why he's good.

Adkins puts on his 3rd sub on the 68 minute mark and took a mega gamble to protect our lead.

Davis could have got injured or an out player which could have left us down to 10 men.

That gamble was De Ridder IMHO gave us more attacking options as we would hit them on the break.

Love the way he was not afraid to take off the captain and Lallana as they was not at the races today.

Great 3 points as it shows the battling side to our game and I'm glad of a break now to get some fresh legs back.

Thought the decision to take off Hammond and Lallana was a brave but inspired call.

Good point.

I did think it was a risk using all subs so early. But it was a brave decision.

I'm sorry to do this but it bugs the living hell out of me.

"Davis could have got injured..."

"which would have left us down to ten men."

Just reading the match reports in the on-line Sunday papers, and the People makes the point that Adkins has now got to 100 points quicker than other Saints manager.

Victory saw Nigel Adkins become their quickest post-War manager to reach 100 points, while Southampton had never won their first four games of a league season in that time.

Against Millwall, the South Coast outfit also extended their current run to 11 straight league victories and equalled a club record of 11 consecutive home league wins set 51 years ago.

Adkins, who took over with Southampton struggling in League One, has taken 45 matches to amass 100 points. The last Saints manager who held the record was Adkins’ predecessor Alan Pardew, who took 80 points after 45 games.

What I love about NA, is that he wants to play expansive, exhilarating football, but realistically knows you can't do that every single week.

Sometimes, you have to grind out results, get your noses in front and just defend the lead.

He brought Fox on for Lallana to nullify their threat down our left, and brought De Ridder's pace on to expose them on the break

NA doesn't just live and die by the sword, he's always looking for the best options for getting a win

I honestly believe that in 5 years time, Saints fans will talk of Nigel Adkins in the same breath as Lawrie Mac

If NA takes us to the promise land of the premier league this season, i shall regard him as highly as Lawrie.

Let alone Saints managers. How many managers of any club have amassed 100 points in their first 45 games?

Not having a pop at nigel, but it is hardly revolutionary thinking to use three subs by the seventy minute mark. It's not like every other manager refuses to use a third sub on the off chance the keeper might get injured. We're doing very well and the substitutions worked but lets not start making stuff up. He hasn't invented the idea of using three subs.

I think it was your namesake Barry Fry that used to lump all three subs on at halftime if his team weren't doing well!

No-one has mentioned on here that the 70th (68th/whatever) minute substitution took off David Connolly who - we all know - is a something of a delicate soul. I believe that DC has been subbed at around the 70 minute point every match this season when he has started? So my view is that the driving force behind that substitution was to relieve DC - the fact the DeR might expose the Millwall Left flank being a bonus of that decision.

I completely agree, this is the vision that we have been missing since Mr.Strachan departed. Well done Mr.Adkins.

Perhaps the statto-meisters but this is one area that sets Adkins apart from Pardew.

I always felt with Pardew that he made subs according to the time on the clock rather than react to what was happening on the pitch..,.at the time it was happening....

As I say, happy to be proved wrong. Just a gut feel.
