Turkish Posted 19 August, 2011 Share Posted 19 August, 2011 but pompey got 250,000 on southsea once....what does this mean for us.. can we climb everest..? Turkish Posted 19 August, 2011 Share Posted 19 August, 2011 F*** I forgot all about the IOW - Make it 70k, actually 80k for 2 reasons. IOW get loads to their festival which doubles their population and we should/ could be bigger than Manu U or AC Milan (not Barca yet but infastructure is there to make it possible). Considering most people going to the Isle of Wight Festival would sail from Southampton, if we superimposed images of Cortese on every large building in the Solent so they could see them if they sailed up and down it they wold automatically fall under his spell and become avid Saints fans. Toadhall Saint Posted 19 August, 2011 Share Posted 19 August, 2011 I went to millwall when we beat them 2-0 at theirs...theo scored. it as hillarious, talk about chav-tastic.....some bird in a pink track suit was one of the highlights Was there too and you are correct Sir - mind you was sat in a pub just outside Waterloo and about 10 - 15 very non chav Millwall fans turned up. Fuengirola Saint Posted 19 August, 2011 Share Posted 19 August, 2011 Another measure of the JCL factor is the numbers on the Hythe Ferry. Up to 2005 it used to be packed on matchdays with queues right bacn down the pier. In recent years, we could stroll down and walk straight on. Towards the end of last season it was getting full again, and there were faces I hadnt seen in years. My brother hasn't started going again yet, I think he's waiting for the Premier League. I'm always giving him stick about being a JCL, I think I've been to more games than him in the last six years and I live a bit further away than him. Toadhall Saint Posted 19 August, 2011 Share Posted 19 August, 2011 They're so well policed and have so many OB follow them around, it's untrue. If you go to their place, you won't see a 'wall fan until you're inside the ground. At their place yes but this is at ours. There was quite a bit of trouble last time we played at SMS - not in the ground but all around town it was kicking off.

There was a bit of trouble outside Giddy Bridge and The Old Fat Cat but nothing major and the OB were all over that. No worse than when any of the West Country yokel teams come down. kwsaint Posted 19 August, 2011 Share Posted 19 August, 2011 At The Den it is aboslutely true; there is a huge amount of policing and if you use the tube the fencing arrangements and police barrier mean that you are kept completely away from the home fans all the way to the away (enclosed) turnstiles. Same treatment for the way out and you're pretty much escorted on to the tube, you can go the whole game, before and after without brushing shoulders with one home fan. For our home games the police are on top of their travelling support with escorts from the station etc. You can expect to see a vastly increased police presence throughout the city tomorrow. But I thought Millwall was a peaceful team. Why do we need to increase the police prescence. It just seems pointless to me.

Prince Jazzbo Posted 19 August, 2011 Share Posted 19 August, 2011 but pompey got 250,000 on southsea once....what does this mean for us.. can we climb everest..? I drove through Southsea minutes after their FA Cup final defeat against chelsea. It was rather amusing watching all those dejected skates shuffling back from Southsea common. Although I'd say 90% of them look like students who'd just wandered down for the day. They certainly weren't die hard fans who pack fratton to the rafters every week, most of them would have got tickets quite easily.

Our JCL's aren't even JCL's that jump on the bandwagon when we're playing well. They only turn up for a day out at Wembley or to celebrate a promotion. Our support makes me laugh. Brussels Saint Posted 19 August, 2011 Share Posted 19 August, 2011 24,000 would be good not poor. It would be pretty good, especially during the summer. Did we not only average 23500 during our last play-off season in the Champ? That would be a good benchmark. My guess will be around 25k.
Wes Tender Posted 20 August, 2011 Share Posted 20 August, 2011 60K, are you sure this is enough? What about the catchment area? What about the fact Cortese is investing? What about Fulham being near Chelsea and able to get 27k? What about Chelsea only getting 10k in 1984? What about Liverpool being able to get 45k last season when they weren't very good? What about the fact they never said man would climb Everest? Expectations of a capaciy crowd will increase when we are in the Premiership, not playing in the first division against the likes of Millwall. This is only common sense, which apparently you lack. But since you continue to raise the Everest thing as your idea of a crap analogy, perhaps it is time to remind everybody of your own crap analogy, you know, the one where you compared the inclination for players to sign for one club or another as being similar to the situation facing Supermarket staff. Turkish: Like all of us, they just want the best deal. It's all relative. Would a check out operator at ASDA stay there for £6 an hour when they could get £7 an hour at Sainsburys?
