The rumour that we were interested in him was making the rounds about two weeks ago. It maybe a rehash or who knows. Real signings don't usually get leaked though (except Cork).

Hmmm, a left sided CB which is what we need, but I'm not sure he is any better than Seaborne.

1st half of last season was on loan at Middlesboro, where he made a whole 2 appearances

2nd half of the season was spent at Doncaster, where he only made 8 appearances

Not entirely sure he would be the 'rock' many of us want.

However, if Nige decides he is then we will have to trust in his judgement.

i saw this on that football-rumours site, don't really know why we would bother with a season long loan tbh, well not for a player like matt killgallon that we should surely be able to sign permanently if NA thought he was good enough to play for us.

Loan with an option to buy might be worth a go if there aren't any better options for CB, if he put injuries behind him and rediscovers the form he showed when he was at Sheff Utd would be a quality signing. If he doesn't I'm sure Seaborne, Jaidi and Martin could fill in along Fonte until January well enough.

Bruce admitted today that a couple of championship clubs were very interested in taking Matt, and that ''he needed to leave the club this window''.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him here, although he didn't exactly pull up any trees for Donny last year.

Good signing if true. We have four good centre backs so to bring in a loan seems like a good deal, especially as we can judge how good he performs before we (potentially) sign him permanently.

And if this does come off, who's to say this will be our only CB acquision? Perhaps Adkins doesn't see Martin as ready yet, or Jaidi as an injury liability.

I've heard good things about Killgallon, I hope this comes off. It sounds like he needs a bit of TLC and game time in a confident team, then maybe we'll see him at his best. Don't write him off before we even sign him ffs.

Always struggled with Kilgallon. I used to work with a chap whose nipper played for West Ham. He & Kilgallon went in for a tackle & the lad broke his leg which ended his football career - forever. Not saying he meant it, but he was not exactly full of concern afterwards.......

I dont think he is particularly good either.

Have I missed something? I am of the opinion we have one good Centre Back in Fonte. Jaidi has been an unbelievable player but is on the way out (he will get murdered by Championship strikers), Martin is a competent League 1 player as is Seaborne. I believe Martin was MOM twice last season and we lost both games, says it all. Nothing personal, but if either of those have a run in the team we are bang in trouble.

Killgallon isn't the answer at all and I wouldn't sign him, looking at our current squad he would be an automatic alongside Fonte.

I'm sure the " highlighted " comment is the one that matters...

How he's played with other sides may be history, but surely what really matters is how he fits in with our highly-competative squad.

Looking at the three unknown factors; "injuries, suspensions and loss of form"... it's vital to have someone " cloned " to step in straight away and not have to play himself in for 3-4 games. If he can do that (if/when required) then he'll be worth a permanent signing - especially bearing in mind that Jaidi is on his last year..and Aaron Martin (though an excellent product) doesn't have a lot of League experience at present.

I agree ..mostly ... Actually I think Martin may well yet develop into a cracking player, but even so he is not a good partner for Fonte, who in spite of being bloody good is remarkably unable to to adapt to playing on the left side, so really needs a left-sided partner. Seaborne ought to be that, but is he good enough for the Championship? .. maybe, maybe not. Hence it does make sense to sign a player such as Killgallon on loan to see if Nige can nurse him back to form. As long as we've agreed a fee in advance, if it works we sign him permanently, presumably fairly cheap. If it doesn't we've lost only some wages.

Meanwhile in the longer term if Martin wants a permanent place in the team, he will either have to learn to play on the left even though he is right-footed, or try to displace Fonte one day. (I'd practise kicking with my left foot if I were him!)

so, saintsweb have spoken and we should not sign him......

guess that mean he is going to be great then

What a weird statement. Despite SaintsWeb not actually having a collective voice, and a few people in this thread suggesting he would be a good signing, you came to that conclusion.

Very odd.

A loan deal would make sense. He's not Prem standard so get him in just for this season. If we go up, let him go, if not sign him up for a year or two again.

He only went to Sunderland a year and a half ago - doesnt appear to have worked out for him (not helped by having a clueless manager) and been a bit of nomad ever since; so worth taking a punt and having a look. Remember not that long ago he was a rock for Sheff U, being linked with £4m moves to some pretty big sides.

You obviously know nothing about him then.

He obviously knows a lot about him. This would be a huge backwards step. Surely we aren't in the market for never quite weres who are now has beens if you see what I mean. If we do sign people they need to be significantly better than what we already have and also ready to play in the Premier next season. If Adkins judges that he meets those criteria all well and good but I doubt it. We can do MUCH better.

I've only seen Seaborne against Torquay but I thought he was looking quality. Adkins has since preferred him to Martin and at Ipswichy, wasn't it Seaborne's pass to Lallana that led to the second goal so what Adkins has said about passing football and playing out from the back seems to be what Seaborne is doing and doing well. With two championship wins under his belt, both away from home, its hardly right to say he's still just a L1 player and time to asses him as he is now, what he was when he was a year younger and a year less experienced. Kilgannon might be a good signing as cover but I'm not sure we need him to be a replacement.

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere but have heard tonight that he is signing on a season long loan tomorrow! Think he'd be a great addition. What do we think?

6' 2´" tall, 27 years old but with only 200 league games to his credit? Why? Does he has " personal" problems?

Yes... he was good in his early career, but loaned out to several struggling sides who probably wanted him as "cover " rather than becoming dependent on him as a regular and then having to buy him?

Maybe his loan terms were connected to appearance money, and the clubs who were skint didn't want to pay out more ?

Has two years left on his Sunderland contract...and isn't popular with Steve Bruce ?

Time to make a career decision, Kev. Continue on the bench, or make a move..?

A season long loan means he will play for us in the Championship so forget the Premiership for now. He clearly has a lot of competition for places at Sunderland. In addition, he is a million miles better than Jaidi, Seaborne and Martin. I have relatives who support Sheffield United and have been to loads of their games. He was superb for them and that was in this league only a matter of season ago. As someone else said, during those seasons for Sheffield United he was an absolute rock at the back and was linked with big money moves. It hasnt worked for him at Sunderland for whatever reason but to say what you have and write him off is beyond belief. With Adkins record of getting the best out of people, I think he would be a good signing.
