The "how did brighton get so annoyed with us" thread

Do we really give a toss? We are light years ahead of The She-gulls and dirty skate bastards in terms of set up and potential and currently back above em both where we know we belong. I guess they are just jealous!

I reckon it goes back to our promotion to the old Division 1. If we had beaten Spurs on the last daz, Brighton would have gone up and not Spurs. But we played out a bore draw with them

Dont think so majority of fans who would post would not have probably even been born in 78 and there was no real rivalry following this game, it come from Adkins comment last season and think they want a skate love in and a new team to hate as they have obviously got bored with Palace

I used to have a soft spot for Brighton due to their fight for survival, new ground and fans united day etc. There fans now sound like the usual post 1990 johnny come lately fans internet warriors who are trying to make up some local rivalry which doesn't exist. I'm sure not all their fans are like these sad internet warrior tossers so it's best to ignore them. Personally i blame it on the Thatcher generation.

They did alright tonight. Fair enough, plenty of their fans are nobs that use their refractory periods to disrespect the mighty Saints FC on the Internet. They've got other fans who are pretty complimentary about Southampton, and they're just behind us on goal difference. Another team with a perfect start, so should be respected.

Some of their fans are not fond of dear old Nige. Think his comments last year riled them. Also, Adkins does come across as an explosion in a cliche factory every time he's interviewed. Their fascination with Nige's former career as a physio is amusing. He's a physio!! He won't know who to sign!! Put a Jack Cork in it chaps :)

the 1978 thing did annoy them at the time....though of course if they had got more points they would indeed have got promoted !!

It's cringeworthy how the have reacted to a little comment made by Adkins.

I don't really care, but it is very silly.

Why did some of the fans and their thick manager take so much offense to it in the first place? Trying to establish a rivalry from it is nuts. Do they not have a proper rival???

Well I suppose it's Palace but even that's a fabricated fake rival. Have to be honest though, the interweb is making rivaly boring - a few keyboard warriors wind up some gullible people. Big deal - all it proves is every club has it's fair share of stupid supporters, us included.

It's a bit like Bournemouth aint it, no 'real' rivals. Their rivalry with Palace only manifested in the late 70s when both were scrapping it out to get out of the old third division. Geographically Palace have loads more closer rivals than Brighton but it's probably the lonely Sussex mob that kept it going. Their obvious rivals *****il Crawley got into the league this year) were our shared south coast neighbours p*rtsmuff but maybe their hooligan reputation is a bit too heavy for 'em. As long as we don't give them too much attention they'll move on to the next target soon enough. Watch out Eastleigh!!!

I don't think they REALLY hate us, but from what I can tell we are the Man Utd of the South coast (Let me finish!!!), in that because we were Prem for a while there were plenty of locals at that time who supported us instead of the home team and would walk around saying "You're s**t" or things to that effect. The Adkins thing then just gave then a reason

eh? Which forum? NSC has hardly mentioned Southampton since we have re-joined battle with Palace. Honestly -- there's no love-in now but I can't see too many mentions of Saints over the last 4 months. We don't like your manager but then again apart from you, who does? ;)

And if you don't think Palace v Brighton is a real rivalry then go onto the Palace forum and start debating that. We fecking hate each other. You lot - it was only ever a temporary pretend hate until we could get back to our proper enemy. Trust me, you're hardly in our thoughts anymore.

Sweet dreams...and don't have nightmares.

Look at their forum briefly they do still have a real hatred for us. I'm still struggling to find out why. Any thoughts?
Yes, I have a thought. You're talking ********.

There was ONE thread on there which had sunk without trace until six hours later when a Saints tit called "Alex" bounced it with a load of abuse. Hardly anyone at BHA hates you, we enjoyed last year's spat and I for am pleased that it's more of the same this time round.

I'm getting a bit fed up with a handful of BHA muppets making something out of nothing and a handful of Southampton fans fuelling it. It is IRRITATING, especially given the very reasonable relationship the two clubs and supporters have mostly had down the years. We're not rivals FFS.

This just reminded me that they changed all their pre match music when we played them at their place to stuff that was aimed at Adkins.

It's a nice little story and IMHO we need more of that stuff in football - just keep it tongue-in-cheek not pure hatred...

I think its mainly because they lack a real identity and for a long time have been quite simply a "nothing club" in the lower leagues.

A big rivalry is a major part of a club's identity and presence and I think they feel that if they can cook something up with us then it'll help them have a few more people pay attention to them. Precisely a la Bournemouth last season.

Of course we haven't got any rivals.

http://www.cpfc.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14 - Care to register with them and tell them that Brighton aren't their rivals? Apart from your gobby manager and that ar$e Hammond, you lot never were and never will be anything more to us than a side that won an FA Cup 50 years ago and had the greatest English player ever to have kicked a ball.

I don't know why you lot are making such a big thing of it. Did you ever watch Bill Hicks? Well, if you looked at the Brighton board then that little "couldn't give a toss" shrug is how most of us regard any rivalry with you.

I like Brighton.

Always have.

Okay, entertaining clash between Poyet and Adkins. But hardly something to get upset about.

They are also a shining example of "back from the brink".

Saved themselves - with deserved widespread football support - from the clutches of mercenary owners.

Kept themselves alive while ground-hopping (no mean feat).

Got the fanbase to lobby effectively for a decent new stadium (some candidates in local elections for the Seagulls Party getting majorly impressive %s).

Sure, I wish we'd pipped them by two points last season rather than vice versa, but they are otherwise a team I want to do well.

Also, the fact that they are South Coast is good news. The entirity of England south of Trafalagar Square has performed pathetically at football for the last 50-100 years. I'd like to see that changed.

Remember that game, got tonked by four spurs fans before the game, who wanted my ticket.

He was also a footballer,a goalkeeper no less...

Nigel Howard Adkins (born 11 March 1965 in Birkenhead, England) is a former footballer and is the current manager of Championship Club Southampton.

Lets face it all rivalries are fabricated, even ours and ours started in the 70's. So not so different to Brighton's with Palace, I've also been to a few Brighton/Palace games and they are not to different to Saints/Pompey affairs. The constant re-enforcement on here that we have a 'proper' rivalry is a bit sad.

The reason Brighton have a beef with us is not jealously, rivalry making or geographic it's just outrage, we could have been anyone but the statement from NA got them. I have a few Brighton mates and I've been to plenty of games over the last 25 years and they are always outraged by someone, be it our Nige, Barry Hearn, Reading FC; they get upset by someone somewhere. Its pathetic that a very minor statement from NA that for most sets of fans would have registered for a week or two has caused this amount of outrage.

Brighton fans had a lot to be outraged about with their directors fleecing the club of its ground and maybe they have used outrage as a energy to fuel their comeback, however it seems now its become a habit. So maybe Brighton you should grow some and stop taking your ball home.
