Guly

Think he deserves a thread.

I've been seeing his name popup on lots of opposition team forums. ''That Do Prado run the midfield'' ''He was excellent'' ''He was everywhere'' ''Cork, Lallana and that Do Prado fella were the difference''.

Always wondered how he would look in this league, but he's taken to it without any problems, in fact he probably looks better at this level than he did in L1. Credit to the coaches at the club too, because he does work his arse of for the team and is always closing down, something he didn't always do at the start - and is something you don't always associate with Brazilian imports!

Hope he keeps it up, I think he's been key in how we've started the season.

He's a very good footballer. Still not sure of his best position, but he'll be very useful this season.

Agreed. Personally I think he has done really well, but not getting as much of the credit. I like to see his understanding with Richardson get better, but that will come with games. Its good to have players like De Ridder eager to stake a claim for his position but I think Guly can't be dropped at the moment. Like most Saints fans, I would love to see De Ridder play but I think it he needs a few more games or so, to settle in.

Would love to see Guly get off the mark on Saturday against Millwall.

As many predicted, Guly's skills have shone through even brighter in the higher league of Championship Football. Some of his flicks and passes are top shelf and even if he has to settle for rotated, "out-of-his-best-position" time on the pitch this season, I'm expecting a few special goals from him too. As a bonus, Guly seems like a jovial, likeable fellow who probably adds to the close bond evident within the squad at present.

Wish he'd get his Mohican back - would really add to his image of being a cult hero.

Looks like he has really settled in now and is well and truly on the bus - who'd have thought that this time last year when he couldn't trap a bag of cement!!

The way we are playing it must be like a home from home - in a way it was a shame we were in red and White instead of our brazil Kit LOL.

Always liked watching him in League 1 and by all accounts it seems he's stepped up to Championship football with ease, as many predicted. Like Morgan, the style of football in this league could well suit him down to the ground.

I also hope he gets off the mark on Saturday. Cork, Fonte and De Ridder too. ;)

But the first Saints player to be subbed again yesterday - which might suggest that the manager is not entirely happy with his (second half) performance level. I say even what is obviously a very good side should be constantly looking to improve, and perhaps starting with Morgan and keeping Guly in reserve might make us an even more effective team than we already are.

I could see Morgan's much better defensive instincts tightening up our defence and blessed with that superb range of passing he could provide even more ammunition for our strikers to feed off. The flip side of that is that he's unlikely to score himself. You pays your money and you takes your choice ....

Lallana, Cork, Hammond, Schneiderlin - not too shabby a midfield that.

But surely, it was a tactical sub, not just taking him off because he wasn`t playing well. By all accounts he was having a great game.

I said last season that Guly has the potential to be a great player for us, with the more time and space that there is away from the lower leagues. IMHO he was too good for League One. Yet sadly, he is going to be one of those players who will sharply divide opinion. See some of the comments in last nights Match Thread. Me? I`m really glad that we`ve got him.

Being the first to be subbed when the game is safe could/should be seen as a compliment. It means the manager sees you as a key player and thus wants to protect you from injury, burn out, etc.

See, this sports psychology malarkey is a piece of cake!

I believe it was a tactical substitution to make us more defensive.

So starting with your midfield we would lose something in an attacking sense.

Swings and roundabouts though.

I am just very happy to have midfield options from: Lallana, Cork, Hammond, Guly, Morgan, Chaplow, de Ridder, Holmes. Over the course of the season all will prove their worth.

What I don't understand is when some 'fans' constantly slate one of our players; especially when they are not even at the match and have no idea how well they are playing (as on last night's match thread).

Indeed. Some "expert" last night decided that because we scored after Guly went off, it proved that he was crap! This, ignoring the fact that we scored three time when he was ON the pitch!

The last two games I attended with non saints left with them saying they don't rate that guly guy as he doesn't do much and just floats about. I defend him all the time but during some games I see their point.

Also, how many times has he been "inches wide" already this season? Heard it a lot.

Great player, works so hard for the team and sits out on the periphery of games, I would expect many fans wouldn't notice exactly what he does but IMO he keeps it all ticking over and moving on.

Knew he would make the step up and be brighter in this league, as quite simply, teams let us play football.

Stanthemanfairoak thinks he is sh*t though........ even though he hasn't seen him play.

Emperor's new clothes!

Didn't anyone go to the Torquay game? He keeps missing the post because he's not very good. Watch him stand around while Ipswich put away their second.

He gives Brazilian football a bad name.

If you say so squire. You are obviously a perceptive tactician and know your football, so I look forward to reading your future posts...

..not.

These will be the same people who said Puncheon was crap but he went on to play well at a higher level.

Guly has been superb this season. Last night I noticed a lot of things about him. He tracked back well and helped Richardson, making a few decent tackles. He has vision and can weave his way in and out of tight gaps, opening it up for other players (i.e Connollys goal and when Lallana nearly scored a second against Leeds). He also has the ability to drive forward with the ball because of his strength. His passing and touch are fantastic.

Ok yes he was shocking at Torquay but in all the league games he has been fantastic.

He brings so many different dimensions to the team that De Ridder wouldnt. De Ridder looks a great player but I get the feeling he would just be a winger running down the line and doing a few step overs, which in the right game would be great but Guly offers so much more than that and works so well with Lambert, Connolly and Lallana with this quick passing and moving style we have going at the moment.

If you can't appreciate what Guly brings to the side then you don't understand football.

I've just written something down Adam, purely for the listeners at home and it says "What they don't wanna do now is conceed another goal".

Which is exactly why he gets up my nose every match - always stating the bleedin' obvious.

Dave, we can work that out for ourselves mate, try coming up with something that'll surprise us...

He looked round at me and smiled.

Had a similar encounter with Jose Fonte the other day, opposite "Buon Gusto" restaurant. This time I shouted "Jose Fonte baby!" and he gave me a half-hearted thumbs up. He was driving a nondescript silver luxury saloon vehicle.

I will keep you guys updated should I have any more brushes with vehicular Saints stars.

I walked past jaidi the other day in Bedford place. He was just strutting down the road on his own in baggy trousers. Looked ard.

His performance against Huddersfield at St Marys last season was sublime. There are not many class acts in this Division but Guly is definately one of them. The space he creates is a joy to watch. He makes the game look easy.

If memory serves this was also the game that spawned the 'taxi for Guly' thread because he missed a couple of chances.

Guly is a sublime footballer and remains in the team for the reason people usually criticise him. This being that Adkins has doubts over De Ridder's defensively quality and despite his penchant for looking a little lethargic at times, Guly has really upped his game positionally and defensively team-wise. All the ability in the world and begginning to apply it. Adkins made reference to his work rate a number of times last year. Could be a good year for Old Guilherm.

it certainly was not, gave the ball away too much and missed a few sitters...and failed to make the obvious pass...a couple of time rickie was getting mighty peed off.......

Did enjoy Guly's part in the 3rd goal at Portman Road. When he overran the keeper he immediately thought of the team, not himself and set it up for DC - although I think DC was screaming at him to do it! But he did, and then just strolled off very casually across the area until DC met him to say thanks.

Guly is a good player. He has superior technical skills to probably everyone in the tea

Bar Adam. He's number ten for a reason you know. In Italy that shirt is only given to a fantasist player ie a guy who can make something from nothing. Guly can do that. When he's not- and not tracking back it can get annoying - but if you love the beautiful game you DEMAND Guly starts. I'm glad he does. Theleague is full of runners without his ability. If he continues to improve the defensive side of his game then for me he must start with Adam the other wide player - both coming in at will.

As far as I'm concerned he is a good player who sometimes does amusingly bad things. Rather than get annoyed at him for falling over the ball or miscontrolling a pass in a good position, just have a chuckle at it safe in the knowledge he'll do something superb shortly after.
