Final league position

Despite the good start to the season, I think we've got to be realistic here.

The Championship is a step up from League 1 and we need to concentrate all season, and will play some very good teams.

Or that reason, I'd personally be relatively happy to finish anywhere in the top 2.....

I still think that the play-offs will be a fantastic achievement.

agreed i said i would expect a mid table finish, but after this start i would expect a top 10 finish and would think playoffs would be a good season, as we have to remember injuries can happen and form can drop.

Here's a question to throw out to anyone willing to respond: if you were now offered 6th place at the end of the season, would you take it?

I really don't think I would.

If it was offered at the start of the season then I'm sure I would have said yes. But I have never heard opposition commentators and opposition fans speak in awe about the footballing credentials of our side. Last year I think we were a bit functional at times; efficient I think is probably the best word, our results were amazing but I don't think we blew anyone away with our style and the whole "Southampton way" seemed like just rhetoric.

This year seems different, and I know its early days so I'm conscious of not getting carried away just yet. But hearing other fans and pundits purr over our players' movement and the way we play the games suggests that NA may really be on his way to creating something special here.

We finished 6th in this league with Burley and i was witness to some shocking performances in that season amongst the good stuff. This year just seems like it might hold something different to that.

Yes I'd take 6th too - it'd be a fantastic achievement to finish higher than that.

We all know that this run will end at some point, and we all know that our form will dip at some point. Even successful, title-winning teams suffer bad patches of form. The question is, can we dig ourselves out of that hole when we come to it? On tonight's showing, yes. We showed that even when Ipswich were getting back into it, that we;re not the team of the past that capitulates, but we have the quality to see out a game by digging deep and finding another gear. This will be the same with a lack of form - the key players for us will stand up and be counted and really come up trumps.

Until then, let's savour each and every single moment of being top of the league, winning, scoring and entertaining.

Let's not get carried away guys.

It's 3 games, 3 excellent results, but it's just the start.

There lots of nasty, cold, wet Tuesday nights away to contend with. Teams like WHU and Boro to travel to...

A top 6 finish this year would be a magnificent achievement, I stand by that.

I'd take 6th if we're playing like this, cos we'd p155 the playoffs. ;).

Sounded very much like we did what we did at Barnsley but had people making those runs past the back line...

My prediction was a cautious 7th, mainly because when I said "we're serious play-off contenders" when we signed Cork and De Ridder, people went a bit defensive. Happy to settle for about 4th or 5th realistically, there is a LONG way to go, and we did already beat Ipswich in the cup recently, so I guess I'm still waiting for us to get tested. :)

If the playoffs were next weekend definitely. On this form I'd fancy us to give most Premiership teams a game, I'd go into this weekend fully expecting to beat anyone in the Championship comfortably.

This. Plus we are going to have to factor in loss of form, injuries and just plain bad luck - all will play a part.

Would I take 6th now - yep, damn right I would.

But I reserve the right to eerrrrr 'reassess' the situation if come April next year we are sitting in or around an auto spot...!

We're one bad result away from a thread about us in a relegation battle.

I would snap your hand of for 6th right now.

As things stand, if we keep our key players fit, we'll do very very well

I think that's the key, keeping everyone fit. But we have the perfect manager to ensure we do!

It's just too early to tell so it would be wise to take sixth place now and a shot at promotion. However I agree with the Kraken, it's not just us biased fans that are seeing something in the team better than achieveing sixth this season. Saints also have a fantastic manager and unity with the management. How many other clubs have all those attributes.

You know, the great thing is that we're going to strengthen the side with a couple more signings (IMO) and what a great time to do it! If that doesn't send out a message, I don't know what will. Yes, we're good, yes we are top, yes we've got some good players, but hey, we want to improve.

Great stuff.
