Ipswich 2 - 5 Southampton - post match fapping session

Some of the stuff Saints played tonight was the best I have ever seen (including when we had Shearer, MLT and Rod Wallace as the front 3)- the whole team looked fast, fit and very, very skillful. It really was like watching Brazil (the 1970 version). However this being Saints they had to hammer away at the self destruct button for 20 mins or so, but it failed to detonate fully. Could have won by more in the end. This season is going to be a long slog, but if we play like tonight (perhaps minus the mad 20) we will be there or there abouts. Jack Cork was MOTM.

I like this quote from an Ipswich fan:

"how many premiership has beens did they have playing?? none i believe. "

I think he is right as well. Our players are on the up - not just seeing their careers out for a few extra bob.

Watched the goals on the youtube link: wow! All five classy goals, created by superb inter-play, and finished with skill and class. Not a scrappy lucky goal among them, unlike Ipswich's second, which we really shouldn't have allowed.

What gets me excited is that we aren't just winning, we're winning with style and conviction, playing good football. This is not a lucky start: it's a very very good start.

I hope we don't get complacent: as excellent as the team is, we still need new signings. We rely so heavily on Fonte at the back and Lambert up front, we must get in a new CB and a new striker to provide competition, to help partner those two, to give them a rest now & then, even (god forbid) to replace them for a bit if they get injured.

And let's hope we can keep the team together. I'm thinking that in Cork, Schneiderlin and Lallana we have three fourths of what could be a great midfield for years to come, not just in this league but in the Prem! That pass from Schneiderlin for Lallana's first goal would have raised praise and awe if Messi had played it, it was that good.

What a great time to be a Saints fan!

Davis and Connolly are ageing players with Premiership backgrounds but neither are has beens (in spite of what I thought about Connolly last season...).

Back from the game and wow we looked sensational at times. The interplay between the players and the confidence to play in tight areas is what allows us to create the chances we do. Lallana is just ridiculous at times and Cork's all action game seems to make us tick. Start the 2nd half knew they would come at us we were coping until a rocket from Andrews you can't do much about and the 2nd came from a misplaced pass from one of our players. However we are not Barcelona and must expect that to play this passing way every now and then we will make mistakes. Even during Ipswich's spell we were still dangerous in attack and Lallana had one cleared off the line at 3-1. The subs made an impact Morgans pass for the 4th was worth the entrance fee alone! Fox looked lively and will be an asset once he becomes accustomed to our style. Very impressive performance, chant of the night......BRAZIL! WE ARE THE SOUTH COAST BRAZIL, WE ARE THE SOUTH COAST BRAZIL

I had the same thoughts about the midfield in pre season. Had you been able to throw in Chamberlain on the right, then.......hello! What a four that would make?!

Ok....hands up...who else has woken up with a huge fixed grin on their face this morning....?

*pinches self*

Yup still got the silly grin.

Watched the goals.

Now both myself & Future Mrs D_P have got goosebumps.

In the cold light of day this really is dreamland, 45 years of being a fan and we suddenly wake up and find that we are playing football of a style and nature that makes the opposition fans gasp, and have quality throughout our side.

Makes a mockery of a certain small town club's Quality over Quantity mantra, 8)

Oh happy dayz...

I think this is the key, most of us have been through so much with this club, lost track of the number of seasons all we were tryng to do was scrape enough points to avoid a drop - I know it seems like an overreaction to celebrate after 3 (4) games but this tension has been building for a long old while

I assume you all had 2-5 in the prediction league, as I did.

If not, why not? :-)

What a start. What a result. Proud to be a Saint...

I had 1-1, when we went 2-0 up, I thought that I accept a 2-1 win, at 3-0 I was in heaven and sod the prediction league, at 3-2, like some, I thought we'd blown it, at 4-2, I was bouncing around the room, at 5-2, I knew, that at last Saints were heading back to the promised land......now what was that about the prediction league!

Overseas at the moment and have just got to an internet cafe. What a very pleasant surprise.

I have to eat humble pie and am happy to do so.

So far I am proved wrong, but at the very worst we look likey to secure our place in this league. Who know it may be more.

Send the abuse this way, I will happily take it if it means we carry on like this.

Yay !!!!

Was hoping for a close win, would of been happy with a draw and a defeat wouldnt have been unexpected...

BUT to win 5-2...farking get in, shows how strong this squad is and with an added centreback I really think we could get auto promotion going on our form at the minute!!!1111

What a great game of football. We were excellent first half and some of our play, particularly the build up for each of our goals was sublime.

However, just to temper some of the slightly over-excitable reactions on here, as with the Barnsley game, we were some very scrappy defending from letting our lead slip. When it went 3-2 everyone around me thought they'd pull it back to 3-3 - for the first 30 mins of the 2nd half they battered us and we really did miss a Jaidi figure to block/clear effectively at times. I think it will give Adkins enough cause to worry and I wouldn't be suprised if we buy a centre back within the next week or so. Fonte has struggled a touch in both games in my eyes when coming under pressure.

sorry but i dont agree, he was class against both Leeds and Barnsley!

Superb performance, 5 goals away to a team that has aspirations of at least a play off place is no mean feat.

Looks like Lallana, Lambert and Cork put in huge performances.

Special mention to MS with those last 2 assists. I've been critical of the lad but if he keeps that up and I'll gladly eat my words on here.

Well done to all the supporters who made it up there and I hope there aren't too many nosebleeds after our first 3 wins.

Great performance -- still buzzing underlined by our five rapier-like finishes compared with their two streaky efforts. We showed real bottle to close the game, though we deserved to be 4-1 up and out of sight before they made things interesting - not just Lallana's shot that was cleared off the line; but also the cross that Lallana was within inches of glancing in; the keeper's sliced clearance that fell straight to one of our players just outside the 6 yard box etc etc. Also nice to see Morgan and Fox slot in seamlessly - our bench is looking pretty formidable.

A few concerns, however. Our defense looked shaky at times, especially the left hand side (Seaborne and Harding). Specifically, the power of Scotland and Emmanuel-Thomas caused us problems. Some of this could be put down to the adrenaline and momentum of Ipswich pulling a goal back just after half time and the ebb-and-flow of an away game in the championship. But Ipswich also had their chances in the first half and its now 5 goals in 4 games.

Ipswich aren't a bad side, so the scoreline definitely reflected our dominance, not their frailties. But lets be clear that their strengths lie in the final third not at the bacl. They lack two decent CBs and have long been looking to strengthen, bringing in Ingimarsson who then got injured. Along with Carlos Edwards at RB (!), they were poor at the back -and that clearly played into our hands.

I've always thought that Saturday would be a morer revealing game than Ipswich. Millwall WILL get in our faces: they play a more L1 style of football, albeit with more pace and are resilient at the back. Other teams will no doubt be looking how we deal with quite a different style and learning...

For me one of the most important things is that Adkins said exactly that... he knows we can still improve and he is always focused on doing so, not resting on his laurels.

Exactly- summed up by a great post-match interview. Like the obvious annoyance of giving up a clean sheet against Leeds and not converting more opportunities at Barnsley (both of which didn't matter in the end), they aren't satisfied and are hungry to improve. A sign of proper winners and professionals.

What a brilliant performance from us. Totally tore them apart when going forward. Some of the football we played around their box was quite simply stunning. One touch football and little flicks. The Ipswich defence may as well of gone home, they couldn't get near us.

The most pleasing thing for me is that we showed plenty of bottle and nerve when we needed to. For the first 20mins of the 2nd half they battered us. When that second went in, with Saints of old, it would've only been a matter of minutes until the 3rd followed. Instead we weathered it, didn't lose our heads and went on to win the game comfortably.

Cork once again covered every blade of grass, Lambert's hold up play and goals were superb and Lallana was a different class to anyone outside the Premiership as per usual, Connolly had a great game but think his error for their 2nd got to him as he lost his way a bit after that and was subbed shortly after - he also gave Seabourne a proper b*llocking after their 1st goal so may have been feeling a tad embarrassed.

I have can honestly say I never, ever seen such a performance away from home from any Saints team ....... and I have been watching Saints for over 40 years!! The passing was slick and accurate; the movement off the ball, simply sublime; the finishing was fantastic; the overall team performance awesome!! I have seen this morning the goals again; Ricky's looked even better; Morgans pass was well, world class and AL finish wonderful. Talking in the car on the way home I said if we continue like this how will teams try to stop us? Man marking is the only option, but who do they man mark?? Lallana, Connoly, Cork, Lambert, they cant mark all of them!!

Dean Hammond has been the big surprise for me, I doubted his ability in this league but he has really stepped up and put in another great display last night. IMHO the weak links are Seabourne, he had a reasonable game but gave the ball away too many times especailly in the second half and Guly is not playing as well as he can at the moment. Also would like to see Fox given a chance at left back - he looked very lively and quick when he came on.

The team is certainly playing for each other and for NA.

As already noted by someone else who was there last night chant of the night: "BRAZIL, WE ARE THE SOUTH COAST BRAZIL, WE ARE THE SOUTH COAST BRAZIL, BRAZIL, WE ARE THE SOUTH COAST BRAZIL, WE ARE THE SOUTH COAST BRAZIL.

If a prem league team scored the goals we did last night the pundits would be creaming themselves and we would be seeing the goals time and time again.

Long may this run continue!!

If Rooney had played that pass that MS did for Lallana, we would probably get a national holiday in honour of it. As you said, some of the stuff we played last night was a different class.

All were very good goals, Schneiderlin's pass was as good as you will ever see but having watched the goals again(and again and again) I am in awe of Connolly's technique of digging that ball out from under his foot to score, it was class and easy to overlook when there were so many good goals.

I do like that observation!!!! Very interesting and your addition has some merits to it as well.

Connoly might be the only one who you could say was on the other side (even then he's perked up recently) and maybe Kelvin, but on the whole we have a hungry bunch of players all trying to prove themselves which has to be better than those just hanging around to pick up the pay packet.

Has anyone else noticed the re-occurring theme in the other managers interviews after playing us. Poor defending shocking defending, poor positional play etc etc etc aren't we lucky they all play poorly against us!!. Could be the same interview with a different manager. A lot of us rightly asked after the Leeds game were we that good or were Leeds that bad, I think we are getting the answer, we are playing that well at the moment. LONG may it continue. Dreamland, and for once after 40-yrs supporting Saints I don't feel like its going to come crashing around our ears. I have a belief in the club & management team & the team on the pitch are simply that a tight knit group, and a TEAM in every sense of the word.

Indeed. I have no doubt that teams will focus more on our style and it will get harder, but ultimately football is a simple game and if you move the ball quickly and accurately, it can be difficult for any team to cope with you. You can man-mark the entire opposition but you can't guarantee that that will work. Someone like Lallana will find ways to unpick the lock and it only needs a split second for Lambert or Connolly to make their run ahead of their marker and they're gone.

I can't help that feel these other managers have got their focus wrong anyway... obviously it is important to defend well, but if you keep possession of the ball and use it well, you need to do a lot less defending in the first place.

Hogan may be a little gay for Lallana considering how much he loves him :) That's ok, considering how much I love Lallana I'm now a tad concerned I'm batting for the other team as well. Between him and Rickie and even Connolly it's nice to have some heroes in the team again rather than journeymen and long may it continue! I'd like to see Lala get his testimonial here frankly :)

Worth noting that the Leeds side we beat won 4-1 last night against Hull (albeit with one new signing, and at home). I didn't think there was all that much in it when we beat Leeds, we weren't in the same class as at Barnsley - and evidently we continued the Barnsley performance in Ipswich.

Don't know what game you were watching against Leeds but I can't remember one moment of the match apart from KD's save just before Hammond's goal where Leeds were even remotely in it. It sounds as if we have improved further still but to say there wasn't much in it against Leeds, I don't know what game you were watching.
