Ipswich 2 - 5 Southampton - post match fapping session

Trust me, anyone who is anyone in football notices. It's just the national press who prefer to focus solely on the Premiership...

Managers, coaches, agents yes, you are right of course. The overwhelming majority of fans, commentators, press, websites, TV shows etc etc will be notice diddly squat cos the Premiership is all that counts.

Fantastic win, was worried when they pulled it back to 3-2 (name a Saints fan that wasn't thinking of past times when we've thrown away 3-0 half time leads at that point!) but very pleased to get 2 more goals after a good spell of pressure from Ipswich. Our squad sounds as if it's gelled extremely well, and it's a testament to what the owners and coaching staff (past and present) have done to build a squad in League One that is capable of destroying 3 good quality Championship teams without many players being added. It's all about getting a run of form up to Christmas so we can see where we are in terms of our team and others in the division. All credit to the guys today though, their heads obviously went down after Ipswich scored their first, but after the second went in it was all about attacking and getting one more for us to see the game out comfortably - except we managed to get 2!

Big lol on Solent after the game too, when the Skate Wurzel said "As bad as we were against Barnet, I thought we were equally as good today" after beating Reading 1-0

Fans only care about their own teams really. The press (commentators, ex players, writers, photographers) know what goes on - remember a hell of a lot of them (Ed Chamberlain, for example) follow teams like ours. It's just all that's reported is the Premiership in the dailies and on TV. Doesn't mean people don't know or care.

Absolutely delighted, spoke to my best mate who was there,he said first half in particular we were magnificent. He said nit picking that Seaborne was very ordinary but was the only weak link. Like someone else has already said, I am delighted to see that Rickie scored his first goals in the championship.

What an unbelievable time to be a Saints fan.

Awesome result. Awesome start to the season.

With possible signings to come (although it's hard to say at the moment that we need them), and with Barnard and Jaidi still to come back from injury, and with Butterfield, Dickson, Holmes and Bart still not getting much of a look in, the squad is looking so, so strong. A tough season (and it will only get tougher) needs a good squad and we have it. The question is whether we can cope without players like Lambert and Lallana should they ever get injured or suspended (touch wood). This is where I think we need another striker/winger and a centre back - that aside we are really ready to face anything the Championship throws at us.

Forget Millwall, just enjoy this result for a few days.

EDIT: Oh, just seen the goals thanks to the link, and Rickie's second was very well taken. Morgan's chip was excellent - and who is this David Connolly people keep raving about? We had one on the books a couple of years ago - I believe he was as good as this David Connolly had he not spent so much time in the treatment room!

Few weeks ago, a Finnish betting magazine tipped the Saints to be *the* team shocking the opposition at the start of the campaign. Reason: a team with great run and minimal changes since the last season will have their act together right from the start. Was laughing my *ss off that the pundit does not know the history of how Saints usually start their season. Now I'm laughing my *ss off that the pundit did not realise how this run will continue. I may be wrong once but not twice.

I think I got 2 very important things from tonights staggering performance:

1. The "team" learned that if they stick to Nigel's plan, we''ll be OK, and

2. Bringing Fox on for Connolly instead of Harding gave Lallana so much space, and Boy did he use it. I wouldn't like to play chess against our Nige.

Wonderful night :)

I think this is another major option for us to use if Connolly needs to be rested. De Ridder, Fox, Dickson, Holmes any of which can play wide and then Lallana can play free and cause havoc behind Rickie. No need while Connolly is fit and pulling defences all over the place as well as scoring.

Coming up to kick off and the anticipation rises as I log in to BBC Sport Championship page. My heart says a 1-0 win but my head says I will take a draw. After all Ipswich are one of the teams tipped for success.

Ten minutes in and we are 2-0 up. I am happy with that as I combine looking at the updates as I mess about with other things. Then just before half time and 3-0 with reports we were playing them off the field. It just could not get better.

Soon in the second half and the score changes to 3-1. Bugger! but still confident. Hold it there Saints.

Then 3-2 and the spirit sinks. The heart pounds. The nerves set in and I log off.....but only for a few minutes as I cannot resist having another nervous look.

Davis makes a superb save but it looks like Ipswich have the pressure and the edge.

Lallana makes it 4-2...game over and a relieving smile. 5-2 and it really is the icing on the cake.

A warm satisfactory glow of pride and excitement.

Bring on the Lions on Saturday.

Let's hope we can "Finnish" the season as well as we've started it!

Another Ipswich perspective;

Southampton tore us apart at times. They were dominant in midfield, classy in keeping the ball and clinical in front of goal. 3-0 at the half probably flattered us.

The most frustrating thing for me in the first half was the lack of options given by our players off the ball. Time and again Andrews would come and collect the ball from Delaney, would turn out and find nothing to offer a pass to. Chopra has an excellent mind for the game but when he is the only player making a move it is easy to pick up.

We brought Martin and JET on at half time (surprisingly keeping Leadbitter out wide and the awful Bowyer in the middle) for Scotland and Kennedy. Tad harsh on Scotland I thought who did nothing wrong.

We seemed to be really up for the 2nd half and raced out of the blocks, scoring two goals relatively quickly, while all the time looking keen to concede a 4th. That fourth eventually came from the outstanding Lallana, one of the best players in the league for me. That goal took the wind out of us and we were a defeated and spent team.

5-2 probably flattered us in the end.

Wow what a stunning start to the season. Is this really happening or are we all living in some deluded parallel universe LOL. Had to live through that 2nd half watching the BBC text updates at work, I just thought oh god here we go again at 3-2, but this team & manager are made of sterner stuff it seems. Long may it continue. Just seen the goals Ricky took his 2 really well being fouled when he slotted the first & a great touch to bend it around the keeper for the 2nd. Have to say that was a good finish for Ipswich's 1st as well.

Ipswich fans comments:

"What did you think of Southampton tonight ?

They won at our place at the weekend and even in these early days, they have a look of Norwich about them. A newly promoted team full of confidence, and looking for successive promotions. "

even they are being nice

just seen the goals...rickies were brilliant...

morgans pass for lallana was sublime.....

brilliant...

Annoys me a bit when people say this is Pardew's team. It's not Pardew's team. Davis, Lallana, Holmes, Bart and Morgan were all here before Pardew; Forte, Cork, De Ridder and Fox were signed by Adkins, and most of the players are fitter and better now under Adkins than they ever were under Pardew.

If anything, this is Cortese's team.

Fantastic win - just awesome. And believe me, they will have learnt a massive lesson tonight about the quality they'll be up against in terms of keeping hold of leads. It looked to me that all of a sudden Rickie has the confidence to take on defences and score on the run - where did THAT come from?! Scheiderlin all of a sudden is on the edge of the box making a decisive, world-class through ball assist pass of pin-point accuracy. This was more than just a magnificent win - this provided the team with answers to questions they probably hadn't even thought of asking!

So proud of the team and I truly believe Adkins is the man that can take us to the Prem and re-establish us back at the top of the game.

What an awesome team performance!!! The second half wobble will be looked at I'm sure. I know that period of play will have really annoyed the boss. I am confident our Nige will sort out these little defensive errors and we will get even stronger. I have never in all my years of being a Saints fan felt so confident that we will sort the silly mistakes we make during the match. Normally we repeat them again and again, but with Nige about I really do feel we will cut down on these pulling out our hair moments. I was really pleased for Ricky to get off the Mark in the Championship, two excellent strikes for him. All the goals were class. The Fantastic 5!!!!
