Signed for a parcel a couple of years back from TNT. He was the delivery person. Shame.

What, it's a shame he hasn't been sat on his arse for 35 years since he retired from playing football? For me the shame is knowing people like Barton and Rooney will never have to do an honnest day's work in their whole life the way footballers wages have gone recently.

Two captains that stood out - for the same reason, because they seen it all and done it all - Alan Ball & Jimmy Case. Both played in teams with a lot of young players around them. You could see Steve Williams thinking 'I used to have this bloke's picture on my wall, he's won the world cup, and now I'm playing in the same team!' Couldn't help but give a major confidence boost, as well as all the know-how he passed on. Case had the same effect on the Shearer/Le Tiss/Ruddock/Wallace generation. It helped that, as well as having won three European cups, he was hard as nails as well!

I remember when he was Landlord of the Villiage Bells or the King Rufus, can't remember exactly which, back in the 80s. We had a stag do up the Rank, somehow he scrounged a lift on the coach. He reciprocated by opening the pub up when we dropped him off. We all thought what a good bloke.

Not long after, I started hearing all sorts of rumours about how he'd treated his wife etc, not sure if they were true. but I recall something in the echo about his daughter planning to sell his cup winners medal, and was refusing to give him any of the proceeds. At least I think thats the story, I could be getting muddled up. It sort of changed my views.

Well, I'm sure the older generation of footballers must find it frustrating themselves that there was no money in the game back then. Of course Barton and Rooney don't DESERVE the money they're on, but it IS a shame that decent blokes like a cup final winning captain in Rodrigues didn't make anywhere near enough to be comfortable after their career, and end up on less money than most of us (lack of qualifications/experience probably not helping, as they were playing football!)

He was landlord of the Rufus pub in Totton (Eling) some years ago and if I remember correctly had a small cafe somewhere in the area.

He had a small eating place in Lymington a number of years ago.

Best Saints captain ever or what?

OK nice guy and all that, and has a special place as captain of the '76 FA Cup winning side - but best captain ?..I think not.

Already past 30 when he arrived, he was only with us for 2 seasons (total 72 games). An injury cut short his career and he never played at the top level again. Others names mentioned here, Paine, Huxford all good club men who may only have been captain for the odd season ..or a few games.

Tony Knapp was my idea of a captain and he was 6 years in the post..1960-67...played 260 games and rarely missed a match.

MY choice : has to be Nick Holmes. One of the few/only locally-born players to become team captain.

" Reliable, dependable and flexible " Lawrie McMenemy quote on Nick's 400th game.

Naturally left-sided, and capable of playing in defence or midfield, not without skill wherever he played and with an eye for goal.

Played 535 games (64 goals) from 1974-1987 puts him in the top 5 of all time apps. and was captain from March 1980 onwards

Being team captain is not just an honour handed to the eldest, or most experienced player, or a superstar to keep them sweet, Nick was none of those things, but a loyal club man who had the respect of those he played alongside and he deserves the title, if one were to be given.

I would be second to nobody in my admiration for Sir Nick - I think along with MLT he must be my favourite ever Saint - but he wasn't a great skipper - he was too quiet on the pitch for that. IIRC he was only club captain for a while anyway, when it was distinct from team captain, on the pitch, who was Kevin Keegan.

Bally & Jimmy Case for me. Williams wasn't bad either

Rodrigues was a very underated player and a fine captain but for me it has to be Alan Ball - so much experience and such a passion for the game, he seemed to get the best out of the players around him.

Rodrigues was very quick I remember him playing for Cardiff in 1962 0r 63 keeping up with Sydenham
