Jay Rodriguez - Signs on a 4 Year Deal

To be quite honest I'm neither excited as some are, or as disappointed as a minority are.

I've barely seen the guy play, and if I had to guess I'd say a hell of a lot of posters on here are in the exact same situation. Highlights on the Football League Show or YouTube clips, or even our two games against Burnley this season just gone aren't enough of a measure either!

Wait to see him in the flesh, then judge.

Agree- have seen him 8 or so times (in addition to all the clips) and in many of those games I wasn't really paying attention to him. Saw both of his games against us where I did track him. He certainly didn't stand out at their place while the game at SMS wasn't a game to impress in. Either way, I recognise that's not enough of a basis on which to form strong opinions -good or bad.

Yes, the stats tell some of the story (but those can be picked to pieces) and I've heard good things -but I also accept that many of those sources i.e. Burnley fans probably look at Jay Rod through rose-tinted glasses as he's one of their own. Indeed, as some admit, if he wasn't a professional, he would be on the terraces at turfmoor (we can't even say that about Lallana).

Just as some went to town on Jos, some of here should keep their excitement in perspective (two sides of the same coin) or just acknowledge their ignorance. I look forward to seeing him in the flesh, and then I'll decide.

CB, I was talking simply from the perspective of a signing that underwhelmed many but turned out really well.

However, even the most open-minded about him never imagined that he would make the difference between promotion and another year in the Championship, which IMO he did.

I'm delighted. I plead a hefty degree of personal ignorance - have seen him play just 3 times plus the obvious highlights/clips etc.

But all the "background noise" is good. He's clearly highly rated by Adkins as well as other top flight managers. Young, bags of potential, voted by his fellow pros in Championship team of year, played for Eng U-21s etc etc

But, I'll try and wait for ten games or so before forming a firm view.

After all, I was a shoulder shrugger on Hoovield signing and an air puncher when we snapped up Agustin Delgado...

He's staying at the De Vere, bumped into him in All Saints today in West Quay. Had a very nice time in Cancun he said and has a very, very hot missus.

I bloody well told you all.

Just would like to point out he is wearing an All Saints top on the OS article.

Now pat me on the back.

Great keper. Always felt his was a potential England player. Danny Sullivan could have added some much needed experience if only he hadn't got injured and turned into Dragon slayer, slagging the club off on their Internet mong board.

Thought you might be interested to know that the actor who played Danny Sullivan is actually Southampton born and bred and went to Bitterne Park School. He is also my cousin.

So excited by this, I love the way the club is going at the moment, the best manager and I have to say cortese doing a great job and chuffed for s-clarke, hes wanted j-rod for ages as I have. Lambert and j rod up front, immense.

Agree. Despite those with rose tinted glasses who now think last season was piece of cake, it didn't feel like that when when we had the poor run of results in mid-season, when West Ham looked a threat and when Reading were overtaking us. In both of our promotion seasons, great as they were, we finished second, not top, and we were under threat right up to the end. The club benefitted from the squad that Pardew built to which Adkins has added an insistence on hard work and fitness, as well as his grasp of tactics. There's little evidence that success has been down to the transfer policy that brought us Hooiveldt, but after the start of the season, Billy Sharp and Tadanari Lee, but not until January and Iago Falque (who?). The big signing last summer, Jack Cork, has performed well but hasn't always held his place in the team and SDR hasn't made the impact hoped for. So perhaps those who claim the previous transfer policy is responsible for promotion, can explain why the club management has made this dramatic change which is getting the best by getting in early and having new players participate in pre-season.

Well, it doesnt matter really if you are a fan of early activity or later activity in the transfer market; last year's approach definitely worked because we got promoted.

BUT

We didnt have the squad depth in December-January to deal with a form blip, and ultimately that cost us the title, despite leading it for so long this season. If we had maybe closed one or two deals earlier in the season, or perhaps earlier in the summer, I reckon the title would have been ours.

But WTF, let the sneering bell-ends on this site have their little moment.

Yeah I know. I was in the same year as him. DH, was actually a really good player too, as you will know.

Yep, I've been a long-term admirer, going back seasons. Always had something top class about him. Glad he's ours..!

No question I was retaining my season ticket anyway but makes it more exciting. Personally, with the training facilities and academy investment keeping what we have with long term contracts and the signings of young hungry progressive players I feel we are doing so many good things. Always felt that lowe held us back before. Also, when rickie was injured we were not half the team this makes a difference to that and also feel j-rod will complement rickie and we still have sharp around ther too and lee. Feel we will bring in a keeper, 2 centre backs and a centre mid to play with morgan and a right winger.

It's refreshing to see how we are these days. Cortese is backing this club to the hilt, that's for all to see. Truly grateful for that.

Every team has a dip in the season, that's either caused by a succession of injuries, suspension or fitness issues. It happens. It happened to Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea...etc etc.

Overall though last season was amazing, there's no criticisms from how we went about things in the pre-season or the January window. We knew we wanted, we did it and when it didn't quite come off...we didn't panic and we still sorted it.

We'll probably get a spate of injuries next year, where the likes of Lallana and Lambert aren't available for a few games. Our form will dip. That's not because we're poorly prepared, it's because 2 of our best players are missing and you cannot pre-empt that sort of thing by signing 'backup' with equal ability, that isn't how it works.

This seems an argument for more signings, not early signings.

Surprised bigger clubs don't gamble on these players. Some of them, Chelsea for example, seem more keen to gamble of young players if they're based abroad. Yet a huge number of championship players make the step up, especially those who look so good in the championship and want to keep improving. Have no doubts he'll do well. Might seem a big fee, but it doesn't take much for such players to soar in value. It's not £6m+ gone, it's an investment that might well rise quite a bit. Very exciting.

We are a big club and we are growing now. We havent had chance to realise our potential but think we will now. I rememeber going to stamford bridge in 95 we beat them 2-0 and there was 16k in the ground, a bit of luck with their owners, harding initially and now roman and look where they are, we could do the same.

Strange given that apart from some sub appearances, he's only been playing regular football for two seasons - indeed don't remember much talk about him until we were linked last summer.

Well people were underwhelmed by Jos. They're not by Jay.

Many are genuinely excited and chuffed with this. I am.

Noone was like that for Jos. The best he got was "lets see how he does".

Completely different scenario.

In his breakthrough season he made lots of sub appearances, only scored a couple of goals but that was still enough for him to get young player of the year. Was only 18 at that point I think

Chris Mccann won it i think. Now that is a class player - shame's he been injured so much.

You still miss my point, which was in response to Crazy Diamond, who said that some people are not that excited about Rodriguez. I simply drew the parallel with Jos. That's all.

I sometimes think that you could start an argument in a phone box. ;)

Great signing - at long last done. I do wonder about how those who get excited about the 'record club fee'! How long ago was Delap signed for £4m? What would that be worth in todays money? Put's a little bit of perspective on things perhaps - i.e. we've not spent big - yet.

£4m was a small amount for a Premier League team's record signing even in 2001.

Question is still valid. Adjusted for inflation, how much would £4m be in today's terms - certainly more than £6-7m.

The summer we signed Delap, Man Utd bought Van Nistelrooy for £19m from PSV. Liverpool recently bought Suarez from Ajax for about £23m, same league and very similar age and scoring record. Only one example I know, but I don't think transfer fees have gone up massively in the last 10 years. It's only the ridiculous end of the spectrum with clubs chucking money at Ronaldo, Kaka and er... Andy Carroll. Even so, Juve spent £30m on a goalie the same season we signed Delap.

Suarez' scoring record is nowhere near Van Nistelrooys, AFAIK.

some good points.... Lighthouse, but it's really down to the Chairman and the (respective club's) economy at the time -isn't it?

Like someone saying ..we got him but he cost us £20 million, alternatively " we got him and he only cost us £20 million ".

But many players are judged by the standard /strength of the league they're coming from rather than personal performance in a good side.

Hooper (for example) did very well for Celtic, where many SPL teams are merely cannon-fodder for the top two, but would he fare as well in the Prem.?

One of the biggest price hikes must be the Torres /Carroll deals. Neither player did much last season, and the clubs must be hoping they'll deliver next season. So far at least Saints have made it to the Prem. without having to spend like a man with 6 arms...or a billion pound bank account.

The key question now is how much must we spend to stay there.....and perhaps become a top six side?

Like any right thinking Saints fan I'd like to welcome JR to the club and hope he goes on to become the Premier League star we would all hope he can be.

But just to inject the smallest note of caution amid all the celebrations, when Burnley came to St Marys back in February I can't really say this player made all that much of an impression on our defence - or this fans memory to be brutally honest. Nevertheless a player of some promise who I look forward to seeing in the old red & white.

It is, the whole thing has been faked - badly. If you can't see that you need to get yourself down to the opticians.

You obviously haven't seen the photo somebody leaked then. The photos were done in the gardens of Limewood hotel in Lyndhurst. He was wearing the scarf... Who needs to go to the opticians now?
