Jay Rodriguez - Signs on a 4 Year Deal

Nothing in that article provides any real evidence to support a) or b).

I didn't say it did, but it is a newspaper report on a supposed bid from us for a player. You asked why he had come to the impression he did in the OP.; s it's not exactly a shock that someone might read that article and form a conclusion about it.

That isn't the impression you give in the opening post. In fact you seem quite sure. You have jumped to a lot of conclusions based on unsubstantiated rumours, and then started a thread based on those conclusions.

You young man truly are a t i t. No wonder only the same old posters post. Anyone new attempts anything and the get told off. I thought this board was for free speech?

How do you know with such certainly that..

a) Rodriguez is being considered by Saints as a signing b) Burnley have valued him at £5m c) He isn't worth that (have you seen him play much?)

Blah blah blah ........................

Am I the only one who doesn't think he is over priced? Goal scorers go for big money, especially young English ones. I claimed before the season started in this websites pre season predictions that he would be top scorer in this league and I fully believe that will be the case whether he comes to us or stays at Burnley. He's the most natural goal scorer I've seen in this league and can get all sorts of them, he's got good strength and good in the air to go with a pretty decent strike on him too. Check out his goals on you tube or something.

**** the price. If we are willing to spend it, I don't think there is any better in this league. Certainly not Ishmael Miller.

I can find no hint of irony in your reply there so I have to ask you Matthew Le God, if you realise that you're currently posting on a Southampton FC-focused football forum and not prosecuting a case in the high court.

Opinion is as equally valid in this place as precision, surely?

Radio Solent are reporting Burnley have accepted our offer of £5.5m for Jay Rod..

I'm not saying this isn't true but....................

We never find out about a deal with a player until it's done, more or less...............

And we never find out how much it was for.....................

So unless he signs in the next 24 hours.........

Got to be sceptical.

An extreme case, but the point is spending £5m on someone like this is an investment. There's a good chance his value will go up. It's not like the Burley signings where we spend and produce no resale value at all.

A signing like Ismail Miller may be alright, but I doubt they'll see his price rocket or anything.

Indeed. After all - that's why Arsenal paid £15m for AOC. They are buying potential - an investment. The likes of Walcott & Bale are both worth considerably more now than when we sold them - and AOC will (in all liklihood) go the same way.

Rodriguez is definitely one for the future. He's young & very talented. No doubt Premiership clubs will be watching to see how he does again this season - whether he's progressed/got sharper/improved - and if he does do extremely well in this division, I have no doubt the big boys will soon come knocking - whether that's if he's with us, Burnley or whoever.

£5m could turn out to be a very shrewd investment.

Just putting a few bits and pieces together here but could this be feasible?

1. Daily Mail reports we have put in a joint bid for Fox and Rodriguez

2. Burnley say OK, reluctantly, but only allow us to sign Fox initially as they do have cover at left back, but not enough cover in the striker department

3. Pictures emerge of J-Rod holding the match ball with "bye bye J-Rod" on it, after Burnely's Carling Cup game, with the inscription later shown to contain goalkeeper Jensen's signature (giving credence to point 2)

4. Stories emerge that we have bids already in place for two players, but at least one signing depends upon the club in question being able to sign replacements (Pilchards et al)

5. Burnley sign two strikers in Ings and Hines, allowing....

(6. ....J-Rod to join Saints)

PI Invictsaint over and out.....

Charlie Austin

Martin Paterson

Zavon Hines (if he signs)

Danny Ings

Jay Rod...

for a squad trying to ''reign'' it in financially, they have 1 too many strikers there...

Patterson injured and also linked heavily with the skates.

I just can't believe we are considering spending £5M on a Championship player, it just seems crazy to me, even if the market is massively inflated.

Sunderland bought Wes Brown for around £1m, although the circumstances are differerent it proves that you can get some bloody good bargains. Ebank-Blake (if he wanted to come) would be a much better purchase IMHO. Just because we have the money doesn;t mean we need to blow it all.

Anyway I would rather keep what we have for now as perfectly happy, lets see how far they can get us by January. They deserve the opportunity to prove themselves in the NPC and have earnt the right.

Never rest on your laurels, if we get into September and Connolly picks up a knock, Barnard still isn't fit... things start to look very stretched and our options to bring in players are extremely limited. At the moment we don't have any ST options on the bench, so it's pretty obvious we need more in that area.

We need a striker and a CB priority before the window closes and I'm pretty sure adkins thinks the same.

Again, resale. Brown for 1m won't increase in value, plus he'll be a lot more expensive than Rodriguez with the wages. Why so afraid to spend £5m? If we have ambition we'll have to start increasing the spending at some stage. Ebanks Blake is alright and would do well, but again it's unlikely his value would rocket, it's not such a good investment IMO.

I don't know why people think spending £5m leaves you £5m down. It gives you an asset immediately worth more than £5m (because he'd immediately cost more than that for someone else to buy).

All these comparisons are pointless. Many transfers occur and you'll find great value and rubbish value at 1m and great value and rubbish value at 20m+.

Exactly, spot on. As has been said, it's more of a 5m investment into our future. He's a young england U21 international who has been tipped to get full England honors before long.

If we're going to spend big money, he's exactly the type of player we should be spending big money on. Not the likes of Keane and Bellamy (I'm not saying they wouldn't improve us, before I get jumped on)

I'm really starting to warm to the idea of Ebanks-Blake coming.

At a supposedly lower price than Rodriguez, he provides power, pace and a great goalscoring record at this level.

However as others have mentioned, can he perform consistently at Premier League level?

Wolves fans say he can't hack it in the premiership, but I'm not sure he ever really got a consistent chance.

I think he scored 6 or 7 goals last season which isn't bad considering Doyle played upfront alone the majority of the time, leaving Ebanks-Blake on the bench.

Of course later in the season they had Steven Fletcher which harmed his chances even more.

Does anyone actually know if he is keen/being allowed to leave?

Also is Rodriguez a strong player and good in the air or more of a pacy one?

It'd be good if we get someone with both attributes...

Whilst I agree to an extent, spending £5m on an asset that has potential to increase in value is still risky at our level. There is never a gurantee of a higher resale if the player doesn;t perform to the expected levels. Spending less on a player with a more proven record seems to make more sense to me at least. The focus surely should be on a goalscorer not a player to sell for more?

Jay is a quick player, can play on either flank too. Saw some highlights of him the other day and he's very tall, looked to have a similar stature to that of Dzeko at Man City. (a little shorter maybe)

Just looked him up and you're right; he's 6ft 1!

I hadn't realised he was that tall and I was also impressed with that header against Palace that was shown on the FL Show, which was also a great save by Speroni.

I'd love to sign both but after finding out about his height I guess Rodriguez looks the best bet.

Even so, they have brought in 2 (3 if Baxter joins them) strikers in a very short space of time, seems like they are quickly moving to replace more than the one player.

Iwelumo left last month so they needed one, but it certainly looks like one more might be moving

To be fair he didn't get much of a chance and a lot of the time Wolves were only playing one up front which made it harder for him.

Strange one for me - I've always wanted to see us break our transfer record especially on a striker but I'm not quite sure what Rodriguez brings to the team. He doesn't have the blinding pace we're missing, he doesn't seem to have the vision or trickery of, say, Lallana either. He's got a decent scoring record but even YouTube doesn't make him look that great. If you were to compare him against players like Sordell, Ebanks-Blake or Maynard then I'd have him as the least obviously impressive player.

Of course I'm sure that if we are in for him then NA knows what he's doing, and I'm not saying the lad is rubbish either.

he looked sharp in those clips, but I have to say I was more impressed with Jutkiewicz from Saturday's football league clips. Not seen much of him before, but he looked very dangerous to me. More in our price range and we have a habit of taking advantage of others financial shortcomings. Mind you clips, what do they really tell you?

how can anyone judge the level of risk when we dont know what the total pot of cash that is available to spend? surely if we spend £5million when we have £6 million available to spend is a much bigger risk than say £5mill when we have a total of £20 million to spend. risk has to be relative.
