Turkish, are you relaxed about the polo shirt he was wearing for the signing photo ?

And, anyone know if he was looking at quilted jackets in WEst Quay ? If so, I think we should be told.

The polo shirt is not great but the jeans FFS. He needs to spend some of his signing on fee in Sakks. We can't all be dressed up and making an effort on the terraces and him letting us down off the pitch.

Shame Jamie Parker was shot really, decent back up to Kelv IMO.

Great keper. Always felt his was a potential England player. Danny Sullivan could have added some much needed experience if only he hadn't got injured and turned into Dragon slayer, slagging the club off on their Internet mong board.

Best thing about this news for me is that NC and NA have done what I have been pleading for for years - set their stall out and signalled they want to hit the ground running by dipping into the transfer market early in the close season.

Would like to see some defensive re-inforcement next; letting Martin go on loan has an ominous Fitz Hall vibe going for me...

Yep. Our delayed transfer activity last summer cost us dearly last season. Thank God they've learnt from that.

Can't believe Sunderland fans, laughing at us for spending £7m on him ''WHO?'' etc.

Errr, didn't they spend £6m on Kenwyne Jones, and 12m on Wikcham? Hardly ones to scream.

I still don't get all the rubbish about this being too much. He's English, young and incredibly talented. People saying it's an embarrassing fee are ignorant to anything outside of the PL.

last year on his contract......it is a tad high...not that I am complaining

henry went for £14m on the last year of his contract and was (at the time) one of, if not the best striker in the world

I also doubt it's all £6m up front either, I just think it's what you have to pay for top young players now. I'm for one chuffed we're in the market for them.

Butland next...

If someone like Tottenham or Arsenal had bought him, it would be seen as a wise transfer for a potential up and coming player.

They see Saints buying him and assume it'll eat up all our transfer budget. Sunderland have been the absolute kings of wasting money in the past 10 years or so, so I don't think I'll get bothered in any way if they choose to mock us for this.

Sundance Beast, if I recall rightly. Pretty sure they were one and the same.

Definite attention seeker, though also genuinely mentally ill (by his own admission, though to what extent who knows).

Now JR has signed does that mean we can't talk about posters with multiplie identities any longer? Shame, had the makings of a good thread on posters of old.

I spoke with an ex-colleague who is a Burnley season ticket holder a few months back about Rodriguez who said he's far from the finished article but you can see he has the potential in him. A good start to the acquisition trail by the sounds of things. Very nice.

Agree. Despite those with rose tinted glasses who now think last season was piece of cake, it didn't feel like that when when we had the poor run of results in mid-season, when West Ham looked a threat and when Reading were overtaking us. In both of our promotion seasons, great as they were, we finished second, not top, and we were under threat right up to the end. The club benefitted from the squad that Pardew built to which Adkins has added an insistence on hard work and fitness, as well as his grasp of tactics. There's little evidence that success has been down to the transfer policy that brought us Hooiveldt, but after the start of the season, Billy Sharp and Tadanari Lee, but not until January and Iago Falque (who?). The big signing last summer, Jack Cork, has performed well but hasn't always held his place in the team and SDR hasn't made the impact hoped for. So perhaps those who claim the previous transfer policy is responsible for promotion, can explain why the club management has made this dramatic change which is getting the best by getting in early and having new players participate in pre-season.

Once again you prove the name "Professor" to be completely inapt.

You and Alpine clearly have the same inability to recognise that the club don't choose to make signings later in the summer. In an ideal world it would be great to have all transfer activity done and dusted by July. But it simply doesn't work that way for a hell of a lot of signings, players and agents hold out for the best deals, which often takes time. The fact you think this one signing heralds a new way of thinking concerning incoming transfers just shows your entire naievety to the situation, as if we've suudenly discovered how much better it is to get players in earlier than later.

The Rodriguez transfer is pretty much the highest profile Premier League transfer so far. There has hardly been any transfer acitivity to date. Does this mean that all other PL clubs have got it wrong? No, it simply means that transfers will happen throughout the summer. If we can get players in early, then fantastic, we absolutely should try to do that. If it takes longer to get in the right player, then I'm sure the club would much, much prefer to do that.

Tell me; you place such importance on getting players in early. Is it therefore better in your opinion to get some players, any players in before July, rather than wait and get better players in, but not until August?

You really are insane. Worrying that we've let a young CB go out on loan who has only played a handful of games.

You really think we wont start the season with more than 3 CB's. Do you think our management are really that thick?

Many pages ago, I declared that I would not get too excited until Jay Rodrigues had actually signed and this was shown on the OS. The speculation and the "paper talk" have been entertaining if predictable and sometimes irritating. Now however I am really happy about our new player; welcome JR! Hope that your Saints career will be very successful. :)

To be quite honest I'm neither excited as some are, or as disappointed as a minority are.

I've barely seen the guy play, and if I had to guess I'd say a hell of a lot of posters on here are in the exact same situation. Highlights on the Football League Show or YouTube clips, or even our two games against Burnley this season just gone aren't enough of a measure either!

Wait to see him in the flesh, then judge.

on the Longside.com some burnley fans were gutted a few weeks back...really gutted when it first broke that we wanted him..some described him as the best burnley player for a generation....

as usual, tone it down a bit but you get the feeling he was excellent for them...which is always a start

plus he was voted as the 2nd best striker in the league (behind lambert)...an U21 international with (I'm guessing) HUGE potential

rather that than Yakubu I guess

I will never forget some posters on here who said Jos was crap after his debut because he accidentally headed the ball into the air when going for a clearance. His first game, one error and he was instantly ****e. If Rodriguez starts and doesn't score he'll be in trouble.

In all fairness, this is nothing like the signing of Jos.

Jos was a last minute signing after a long summer of publicly nearly signing three other centre backs. We will never know for sure but it did feel like a last minute deal as well, out of the blue. And he wasn't playing for his club either.

We've been after JR for a long time, we've spent a fortune on him and he is what they call in business a "big bet". And he was in the team of the year.

And, I've not seen much in the way of doubters either, because of JR's rep and our determination to get him. All I can see is excitement.

So at any level, whichever way you look at it, nothing like the Jos signing.
