Jay Rodriguez - Signs on a 4 Year Deal

JAY Rodriguez is set to undergo a medical at Southampton today, but will not be rushed into a decision over his future.

The Burnley striker will go straight from the airport to St Mary’s, following his return from holiday, and meet with the Premier League newcomers for the first time.

But contrary to reports the south coast club will not demand an immediate answer to their offer, even though they are already playing a patient waiting game.

Not only has it been 10 days since a £7million fee was agreed with Burnley, but it is 12 months since they first expressed an interest in the England Under 21 international.

Last summer the Clarets rejected a £5million offer for their homegrown hotshot.

But Southampton were not put off by Burnley’s resistance, and returned for their prime target this summer after winning promotion to the Premier League as Championship runners up.

Although other clubs have expressed an interest in Rodriguez, at the moment there does not appear to be anything standing in the way of the 22-year-old becoming his hometown team’s club record sale, beating Scotland striker Steven Fletcher by £0.5m following his £6.5m move to Wolves two years ago.

Providing personal terms are agreeable, and the medical is passed, Burnley’s top scorer could be reunited with former Clarets team-mates Jack Cork and Danny Fox at St Mary’s by early next week.

Fulham had an earlier £5m bid rejected, while there have been enquiries from a number of other top flight teams, including Newcastle United, West Ham and Aston Villa, as well as Championship side Cardiff City, who are being backed by billionaire Malaysian owner Vincent Tan.

However, Southampton have been in the driving seat almost since the transfer window re-opened, and are favourites to win the chase for Rodriguez’s signature.

Having a medical would suggest to me that the personal terms have been sorted with his agent whilst on holiday. So it's now a case of having the medical and being sold the vision by Adkins and Cortese. 95% There I reckon. But if I remember rightly didn't Sam Baldock have a medical with us then disappear to West Ham when they offered more money?

Let's hope we don't get gazumped this time.

I don't think we ever got that close with Baldock, not even sure we agreed the fee with Mk Dons.

The only player that I can remember who agreed terms, had a medical etc...then ran, was John Halls back in the summer of 2005. There was an article on the OS, pics of him at the training ground etc - then a day or so later he turns up at Reading.

Don't think we missed much there seeing as he's turned into a pretty average L2 player.

How close did Matt Elliott get? I know his wife didn't want to move down here, but thought he got pretty close...?

close enough to say all his goodbyes to team mates etc., leave to travel to Southampton, only to rung on his mobile an hour into his journey and told to return..:scared:

I don't think moving South is the main problem we face in getting him to move here. I believe the big sticking point is just leaving Burnley full stop. He is a local lad, born and raised there. His dad played for them and JR grew up supporting them. A perfect world for him would be playing in the premier league for Burnley. I think it will come down to him asking himself how much he wants to play in the premier league now. Maybe he might wait another season to see if Burnley can mount a serious challenge for promotion and if not then consider his future. I obviously don't really know what he is thinking but it does seem to me leaving his beloved Burnley will be a massive decision for him, and a real wrench if he were to leave. If he stays then he should only be applauded for his loyalty.

That is never going to happen. He is out of contact next summer so Burnley would either want to cash in now or him to commit long term.

Turned out to be a huge miss too, he was quality at Leicester. Who was the winger, who may of been at Leicester, but turned us down for Sunderland? He got a bad injury and completely went off the radar. We were in the Prem at the time and he seemed a very promising youngster - dodged a bullet with that one...

Did exactly the same thing happen with him as it did with Elliott Ward then?

I get the impression that Burnley NEED to sell him in order to buy players themselves. I'm sure that he will move because it is right for him but by moving he is also providing "his club" with the funds to improve overall.

At the moment though we know nothing concrete but it seems very unlikely to me that he will not sign for us.

I didn't know that he was soon to be out of contract. I can see why the club are keen to sell then. 7 million for 1 season left on a contract seems alot for a club that could lose him for nothing next season. I guess they are in a strong position as they know he will be sort after by alot of clubs next year. If you want the guarantee of landing his signture early and avoiding the potential scramble for it next season, then your going pay for it this year I guess. The club might be keen to cash in on the player, I just wonder if he really wants to leave.

I think it's pretty certain that he's down here today...

Well it does seem a pretty stupid tweet considering numerous media outlets, including the local Burnley rag and the Echo, have said he is down today for a medical and Nixon on Twitter says he's here with a decision to be made by tonight.

But who knows?

He may well be - perhaps he's just not having the medical today.

Adam Blackmore also said he'd be surprised if there was anything announced about Jay before Monday.

I do get the feeling Simon gets bits of info from Sibley though.

Yeh that's what I'm trying to get at, he's probably got a contract to sort first....and the medical will probably happen tomorrow, which means an announcement possibly late Friday or early Monday. But I'd be gobsmacked if he's not in Southampton today talking to NC etc.

That's the one. Just had to look him up. Played about 35 times for S'land, although only 15 starts. Cost £3.5m and was diagnosed with a rare condition of the knee, had 10 ops and then retired completely. Like I said, dodged a bullet. £3.5m would have been a big fee for us back then...

yep... Ward was even more advanced, it caused quite a rift between us and Coventry at the time.

Heard from a reliable friend that Jay Rodriguez move to #SaintsFC is OFF ! Regarding doubts over Jay's kne

and to be fair, he missed a fair chunk of the 2nd half of the season with an injury, checking back it was his groin.

To know that, he would have had a medical. As he doesn't seem to have had one yet, probably not true.

Tweet from Graham Chase, a journalist based in the north west

@gchase1: Latest I heard on Jay Rodriguez was that he'll have talks with Southampton on Sunday. Obviously has a clear idea of what's being offered.

@gchase1: The likes of Everton, Villa, Reading just some of those interested but unable or unwilling to match Southampton's offer.

Not sure who to believe, according to Nixon he stayed over night to continue talks today. Sunday seems a very odd day to talk...

Well let's face it, these journalists won't really have detailed chapter and verse of exactly what/where/when. The most likely explanation, if they know anything at all, is that they've heard he's down here sometime about now and over the weekend, and there's been a bit of 'chinese whispers' over the precise timings, or they've guessed a bit from the little they do know -- or indeed the timings may simply have changed a bit for entirely trivial reasons.

Amazing that with whole of Hampshire (excluding the blue bit down the A27) is full of Saints fans working in garages, shops, hotels and yet we have no sighting reports of Jay-Rod. So is not actually here, or are we just a useless bunch of spies. Another possibility is that his agent booked him into a hotel in Portsmouth to keep him under cover from Saints' fans.

To be honest he could be standing next to me now, and I'd be none the wiser. Young, tall bloke, presumably not in football shirt, doesn't narrow it down much.

Tell you what, I'll ask every young bloke I see who they are. I'm sure that will end well! :?

I will not believe this until he is spotted in Winchester viewing Martin O'Neal's house.

Just had a call from a mate who works for a letting agent in Winchester to say that he is showing Jay Rod around said house this afternoon.:)

Alan Nixon is putting a piece in the Mirror that should hopefully be in there tomorrow but he says it should also be online at around 11pm tonight.

We'll see what updates he has on the situation. I'm still expecting it to be concluded on Sunday or Monday.
