Jay Rodriguez - Signs on a 4 Year Deal

Still think this could go either way.

He's had plenty of time to turn us down flat, so that's probably good. It means we must be in right ball park wages-wise.

Adkins/Cortese probably banking on selling the club and our prospects. I guess they want to get him in the building and give him the vision speech.

Or its all one big stalling operation.

I agree. I think they're waiting for him to get back, sit him down and play the DVD. Add in a couple of motivational speeches and really sell the club!

Every player who has signed for us has always commented about how the Chairman and the manager sold the club to them with the vision and ambition. This will always work in our favour in a lot of potential deals.

I get the feeling Rodriguez is just using us as a bargaining chip to flush out offers from other clubs up north. I can see us being a last resort option, he'll come here if no-one else comes in for him. Which is why I think this has still got a long way to run.

I tend to agree although the problem for Rodriguez may be whether anyone else will match the fee we've offered. It would then come down to whether Burnley will accept a lower fee for the player to join a club he prefers. Think this one may have a bit to run although once he's back in the country things might pick up.

Not sure why people are reading so much into the delay...

How many years have you been on SaintsWeb?!? lol

That killer combination of impatience, 'ITK'-ism, and the expectation that players and club officials spend 26 hours a day, 8 days a week, solely focused on negotiating transfer fees and personal terms, otherwise they are 'unprofessional', 'lack ambition', 'lack funds', or 'don't have the ability to attract big names' etc, etc.

Keeps me amused all summer anyway, why should this one be any different? :-)

I get what you are saying but what I can't understand is that if the lad has ambition then he's not going to get a better offer from another prem club, the clubs who potentially would want to take a gamble on him are going to be similar clubs to us,Norwich, west ham, reading, lower prem clubs or newly promoted etc etc.......if he's holding out for a bigger northern club then hes going to be waiting a long time as I just can't see bigger clubs taking a gamble on him.

Tbh if what you are saying about us being 'a last resort' then I don't know if I would want him here if his hearts not in it.....he needs to wake up and smell the roses if that's the case,we will be making him a millionaire and will be giving him the opportunity to play in the best, most watched league in the world and he wants to stay in the land of the whippet and flat cap.....it just doesn't make sense.

IMO I think the deal has been done barring the medical and he's in no hurry to cut his holiday short because there is no need to.

I have followed this thrread for a while now since our initial interest in him. I seem to remember him saying he ws going nowhere in January as he wanted to get Burnley back into The Premiership. Things move on and his loyalty to Burnley is/was a credit to the character of the young man. However IF he is ambitious - he will have to move on to a bigger club. Some one of his age may only remember the relegation threat year after year, selling all our best young players - but we have moved on.

With the likes of Cork & Fox movng south - he has old team mates (not necessarily friends) who can also sell him the dream. I'm not saying it will be a done deal - but let's face it as clubs go we do have a lot going for us. If I was his age with the potential he has - I would jump at the chance of pulliong on a shirt a St.Mary's. I know my choice is somewhat blinkered - but he can only get better playing and training alongside some of our experienced squad.

We have an unknown in Lee for next season too - he was just settling in to his stride wjhen he picked up that training injury - which may have ben a blessing looking back. People we think we have no pace, we are one dimensional with Lambert - but I think we will be top half next season with or without Jay Rod.

Back on to the theme of this thread - I personally welcome the idea we can go out and get some young English players hungry for success. For too long we have had to sell our products - we all know who they are!

If you venture on to this site Jay and read some of this diatribe - you would be an asset to any club going on your current resume. Don't come to us thinking you've made your big move to the big time...it's only the start and you need to set your sights as high as the Chairman & the Manager.

I'd like to see him in sooner rather than later to get to know the club and the rest of his team mates pre-season.

Anyone know if Fox or Cork have tweeted anything?

There is definitely no smoke without fire - and I think the embers are glowing hot.

We need more options and I think Rodders could be rhe key - with a couple of other youngsters - but more concerned about our defence!

So no then?

It's more telling that they've said nothing. The last time there were articles popping up all other place, the Burnley chairman came out and confirmed there were no bids. this Time, nothing.

Seriously, there has been a bid accepted. Don't bother wasting your time thinking there hasn't been!

The BBC have said so, sky have so, BBC Radio solent have said so, the daily echo have said so,. the Lancashire telegraph have said so. It's just up to him now.

Jack Cork transfer saga, part II.

Cork waited to see if there were any other/better offers before committing to us. Likely that Rodriguez is doing the same.

The fact it hasn't become public knowledge that another team has had a bid accepted, or that JR has rejected us, is good news.

Just sit tight and wait and see.

Whilst agree it's like the Jack Cork saga, it's because we had an offer accepted and had to wait for him to come back from holiday to complete the formalities.

He is never going to turn us down flat. He will want us there even if just to negotiate his terms up with someone else. The only time we will know an outcome either positive or negative will be when he signs a contract either with us or someone else!

why are people ****ting themselves? It's June FFS! not end of August. The player is/has been on holiday and it's a bank holiday. Agents and club staff aren't at work.

Lighten up people, I still think we'll get him. However, if we don't so what, move on and target someone else

Check this forum every summer and you'll get the usual array of nutcases suggesting our season is f*cked because we haven't signed half a new team before the end of June.

It's mad, I think some people expected us to sign people the minute we went up.

We've only been able to officially sign people for 2 days since January

Well not neccessarily. He could turn us down flat to force Burnley's hand to lower their asking price to open up the field. Player power.

And if he absolutely didn't want to come to us he could say so without it affecting his negotiating position with other clubs. Mainly because other clubs will offer much the same as we would.

I think we can say he is at least considering us. Which is a start.

As others have said last season on the 1st June a thread was started on Jack Cork signing

http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?30546-Jack-Cork

In the 13 page thread the usual posters said we had lost the deal because he didn't sign for us immediately and he was going to HoofBall Sam or Burnley or Swansea etc. etc.

Yet he signed for us on 11th July, i.e 6 weeks later. (It always nice to reread old threads).

Not picking on this comment in particular but it is representative of several that are quite inaccurate and misrepresent the discussion about players in the market. If there has been any post as per this claim why not quote it? Because such posts can't be quoted if they don't exist. Talking about potential transfers does not imply any expectations that deals should be made in haste so why are a few people keen to discourge discussion and why include insults about people who are fellow Saints' fans?

we will soon see if this Alan Nixon is genuine, it all should happen tomorrow and Thursday.

I would not give too much credence to him...his story has changed beyond recognition. Each little change is subtle enough to portray an element of 'being ITK'.

More commonly known on forums as 'back-tracking' or 'NITK'.

The reporters in the Lancashire local press are more reliable

Well, I agree with Kraken. Perhaps he hasn't quoted any posts because he can't be bothered to trawl back to last Summer to find examples, or else he doesn't wish to make it personal. But my recollection of past closed seasons is that there certainly is an element who get a little excitable if it seems that nothing is happening in the transfer market within a few weeks.

So I take issue with your claim that if posts are not quoted, then the situation does not exist. But just to counter your argument, how can anybody be insulted if you claim that the people making these impatient posts don't exist?

The chances are that Rodriguez will now know what the package is. He will I,m sure have been on the phone to Cork & Fox sounding them out about the club.

His agent will have given him a run down on what if any other interest is likely to transpire. I,m sure that Cortese & Adkins have done what they can to sell the club

to Rodriguez through his agent Akinbiyi as well. So if it's true he is coming either today/tomorrow, to see the area & training facilities etc for himself. Then to get the run down from NC & NA then possibly to go for a medical. So there could be a decision by Thursday, but just as likely he could then take the weekend to decide & discuss it with his family.

So there could well be no decision until Monday at the earliest, but who knows guess we just have to be patient.

OK - Typical Foreigner comment here... But is there truly a difference between Playing/Living North or South ?

Do people think this is a factor in players signing a contract that normally is only 2-3 years long ?

Similar to the point I was getting at.

If he loves the north that much, can't he just move back up there in 10 / 12 or so years time when his career is over. But whilst he's in football, he needs to progress and I think that Burnley to Saints (Mid table Champ to Prem) is quite a progression that I don't think even I'd turn down. This could be a big stepping stone in his career. Whilst here, he COULD bang in 15 - 20 goals for the next couple of seasons, potential Eng call up, move to a big club possibly further back up north on more money etc etc.

Even with the rose tinted glasses on, I think the potential move to us is a massive chance / opportunity in his career that he can't possibly pass up.

Would Rodriguez have a chance of making the Olympic squad ? That might change a lot of things cos I suppose they'll be getting that together pretty soon and he might be a bit tied up for a couple of months.

It wouldn't surprise me. Along with Cork. I'd say they'd both stand a pretty good chance. Both players under the age of 23.

Well depending who you believe, a flight from Cancun arrived at Gatwick this morning at 8:36. Could he have been on that flight?

Probably mentioned by others before, but surely if he went on holiday before the bid was made, he would probably have left from Manchester airport and therefore likely to arrive back there.

Not that it really makes a huge amount of difference.
