Jay Rodriguez - Signs on a 4 Year Deal

A mate of mine supports Everton and can't see them bidding. They can't afford him for a start, they now have Jelavic and they haven't played anything other than one up front for the last 3 seasons.

I imagine negotiations between JRod and his agent are something like this:

Do you want to play for saints if no other prem clubs want you?

Oh Yes, definitely.

Do you want to play for saints if any lower prem clubs want you?

Hmmm, depends who it is.

Do you want to play for saints if bigger, top half clubs want you?

No.

Exactly. That's all it'll come down to. If prem clubs who've enjoyed the past god knows how many years in the prem with bigger grounds/more high profile players already etc like, say Villa or Everton come in he'll more than likely go to them. There seems a lot of interest, I'd be surprised if we are the only club who get to the point of talking with the player.

Alan Nixon is a shareholder in Proactive Management, set up by Wayne Rooney's agent Paul Stretford (Stretford has since left Proactive to form another agency).

Because he is a shareholder in a football agency and thus could be said to have a vested interest in planting stories, a lot of papers don't trust or use him.

It would be interesting to know who Rodriguez's agent is.

Very interesting - thanks for pointing out how we should all be wary of people with vested interests!

A few seasons ago Alan Nixon was labelled many things on the Saints board as someone with an "anti-Saints agenda"- possibly even worst of all a skate - as amongst other things he was forever pushing stories about Strachan definitely going to Leeds. After that his name was met with derision and widely regarded not to be trusted.

So, what has changed to make him now a reliable source of info on anything connectedcwith Saints ?

He's saying something positive and something that people want to hear. So they cling on to it. Same with the Butland rumours. People like the sound of it, so are inclined to believe it more.

Wasn't Nixon saying how Adkins was off a couple of weeks ago?

Supposedly predicted the Sharp and Hooiveld deals right.

Come on guys, these people wont get everything correct. Just because something someone like Alan Nixon says doesnt come to fruitation doesnt mean it didnt have legs in the first place. The fact he DID have information on the Hooiveld & Sharp deals before they happened suggests he has information but I suppose if Rodriguez doesnt sign then people will think he was lying in the first place.

You do realise that every single human being connected with professional football in this country for the last forty years has been described as having an "anti-Saints agenda" at least once by at least one dinlow on this forum.

Alan Nixon, whoever he is, does not have an "anti-saints agenda".

Why on earth would he?

How does David Prutton influence the career of Jay Rodriguez? Is it some sort of voodoo thing?

Stop getting yourself at it Adrian. He asked "When is the last time that Saints signed a player who is in his early 20's, highly regarded and whom some people think has the potential to play for England?"

The answer was David Prutton.

Is Prutton still the record holder?

http://www.wsc.co.uk/content/view/631/29/

David Prutton is the surprising holder of the record for most appearances without earning a full cap, with 25, but James Milner is closing fast. He has 21 caps so far and will still be eligible for the 2009 European Championship, giving him a good chance of overhauling the overall Under-21 *appearance‑record holders, Gareth Barry and Jamie Carragher, who have 27 each.

:shakey:

He's now 4th, behind Fabrice Muamba, Michael Mancienne and Steven Taylor.

This is just paper talk to be honest, plants by agents I'd imagine.

From what I understand up in Sunderland, their transfer remit this summer is for 'proven experience', so splashing £7m on an unproven top flight player seems a bit unlikely, even more so when they did it a year ago with Wickham.

I remain convinced that we are the only club to have offered credible money over the past 12 months. Jay Rodriguez is of course free to see what's out there, but we've been tracking the guy for a good 12 months now (probably longer) and I doubt we'd be wasting our time if there wasn't a very strong interest from his camp.

We will probably still have to bide our time, similar to Jack Cork, but I'm confident we'll get him in the end.

I think the mail are rehashing old news, they obviously didn't read Chaplow#s tweet.

They may well be, that doesn't mean Chaplow would even know if we were selling him or not, plenty of footballers have had a phone call and been in another city playing for another team within days with no prior knowledge. Paul Ince got the boot from Man U when on a golf course, sold to Inter and told to agree terms asap.

I'm confident Jay will sign for us. I honestly don't see anyone matching our bid for starters.

The lad's been on holiday, Saints have probably said to finish up and head south for further talks with his agent and SFC representatives.

However that means to some he isn't coming! If there is no reported movement towards, or a completed deal this week then maybe it's off.

I don't believe for one minute the fact he hasn't signed yet means he has no intention of doing so.

I had understood that when a selling club accepts a transfer bid for one of their players, the buying club then has a period of exclusivity during which it may negotiate personal terms with the player concerned without (in theory) other clubs being able to intervene. However, I have also heard of clubs simultaneously accepting multiple bids for a player in the past, so how more than one club can possibly have 'exclusive' negotiating rights is something a mystery to this befuddled fan!

Whatever - our period of 'exclusivity' with J Rodriguez has (according to at least one Sunday paper) now expired. Make of that what you will.

It doesn't really matter if no one else has had an offer accepted.

Let's be honest if manure had a bid accepted for a player, that player would get the first plane back from holiday to make sure the deal went through. Based on rumour only, it wouldn't surprise me if Jay rod didn't really fancy a move to Saints but his agent is definitely looking to drum up interest from other parties. Good player, maybe loads of potential, probably the sort of grounded player we need, but at £7m that is an awful lot of cash.

Another Nixon update:

He now understands that there is a deadline for Thursday and that Jay is on holiday until Wednesday meaning that he'll have a day to get it sorted and signed. Even Nixon is getting bored of this deal now!

To be fair, he's starting to change his story so much that I'm starting to doubt if he really knows.

Supposing his return was due today as first thought. Id imagine a day to rest after the jet lag of the flight. Wednesday travel down to SMS for talks with NA and NC and have the deal wrapped up and a medical completed by thursday eve. Sounds like a plausible deadline tbh.

@reluctantnicko Also, where are you hearing that Jay is back Wednesday - if you can release that info.

@ConnorArmstrong Checked with an interested party ... Word was he was in today, but not the case. Thursday deadline sounds like a Saints idea

Don't know who hartysaintboy2 is but here is Alan Nixon's latest tweet on JRod:

@reluctantnicko: @hartysaintboy2 Not even bothering on that front until Wednesday. Nobody else bidding at 6.5m. So down to Saints to sort with the player

This deals getting pretty pathetic now.

Original Tweet to Chris Boden, Chief Football Writer at the Burnley Express.

danbsfc: Hi @LT_Suzanne & @bodenknights. Heard Jay returns from holiday on Weds and Saints have set a Thurs deadline? True? Thanks!

I then get a response...

bodenknights: @danbsfc @lt_suzanne back 7th, so things should move on then

So, Nixon says Jay is back Wednesday and Boden says he returns on Thursday? Seems nobody knows!!
