Daren W Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 A quick look at the amount of English players Saints have in their squad and it's very noticeable the amount of English players in our main squad. I know that the Football league voted for a rule whereby every team’s 16 man matchday squad must contain at least four “homegrown players” and that that the four “homegrown” players must have trained at the club for at least three years before the age of 21. With a squad of about 30 players only nine are not English. Now without getting all jingoistic and EDL about it all, that's actually quite impressive... No so impressive is the fact that the Premiership does not follow this ruling and any club getting promoted instantly finds itself on an uneven footing to the other clubs already there... Am I the only one a) Impressed by the amount of English players at St Marys? and b) No impressed that the Premiership doesn't adhere to the same rules and regulations that the rest of the Football League have to? Matthew Le God Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 (edited) "Homegrown" doesn't mean they have to be English. Danny Fox, Jonathan Forte, David Connolly (and I believe Bartosz Bialkowski and Morgan Schneiderlin) all count as homegrown even though they are not English. The former three of course all have English roots, but even without those roots they would still count on the grounds of their football history before the age of 21. It is only Radhi Jaidi, Jose Fonte, Steve De Ridder and Guly Do Prado that wouldn't count. Edited 15 August, 2011 by Matthew Le God
Saint Garrett Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 Does a 'homegrown' player just have to have trained for Southampton between 18-21? Or is it any club in England before 21.
The Kraken Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 Does a 'homegrown' player just have to have trained for Southampton between 18-21? Or is it any club in England before 21. Any club. The ruling in itself is a good one, but doesn't go far enough IMO. Just 4 out of matchday squad of 16 have to be homegrown; nowhere near enough to make any difference at all. Saint Garrett Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 So, only 4 players of the 16 have to have been part of a club in England for 3 years before they were 21. This doesnt make any difference at all does it !?
once_bitterne Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 A mainly all English squad comes from being in L1. As we move up the leagues we will have less English and more players from overseas.

Fewer. Those players who are English will be no less English.

It does make me chuckle to see that Tescos has 8 items or less while M&S have 8 items or fewer.
angelman Posted 15 August, 2011 Share Posted 15 August, 2011 "Homegrown" doesn't mean they have to be English. Fabregas was considered homegrown for the Arsenal.

I think morgan needed to join us before his 18th birthday, 8 nov 2007 He joined us on 2008 Bart turned 18 on 6 july 2005 and joined us in 2006 Neither of them can have trained in this country for three years before their 21st, I think.
