40 Million Quid since the turn of the Century

Nice article there, Phil.

It goes to show that even in our darkest days, the youth system was very good.

And (for once) nice to see that he had done some research and mentioned the next generation rather than it being just another AOC story.

Again, I repeat the tale of my mate from Bahrain - his kid was pushed by the local coaches to have trials for proper clubs in England. Through friends of friends of the taxi driver, he got a 2 day trail at Staplewood aged about 13. He played and impressed the then Dave Puckett, but the lad himself asked to be subbed during the final match as he simply felt out of his depth. The others were simply too good for him.

He walked into "a big club oop north's" academy, stayed a season and left because - he wasn't being pushed enough..

But it IS nice to see us getting mentions again in the papers. Another piece of the "warm fuzzy feeling" we have until the first defeat of the season (whenever it is).

Excellent article & a well researched for once, well spotted Phil. Nice to see them mention the new crop coming through as well. 40-million is some serious dosh from the academy.

Also from what you say above it goes to show how careful you have to be with youngsters, to nurture them through. Also shows how well we do it at Southampton & always have done.

In fairness Phil, the Echo had a small article on this last Thursday.

But in fairness, they aren't one of the Nationals. 8)

One would expect our local "rag" to run with this sort of stuff, but as much as the title, the fact that it is a National and for a change

1) makes no stupid errors about our ownership - (in fact detailing it very well I thought)

2) has checked out (or at least googled/read on here) about our upcoming kids and even mentions them.

I had no idea we paid 1.8 Million for Danny Fox. I didn't pay a lot of attention to his arrival because I thought "....another left back?", I guess hes sposed to be pretty good for that sort of price eh?!

Seems strange to be spending that sort of money now, the last couple of seasons we've been picking up some good players for a lot less. Heavens knows what it will be like in the PL. On MOTD the other night they were saying Arsenal haven't spent any money this season I assume 12-15 million for untried kid is small change these days......
