ponto1963 Posted 14 August, 2011 Posted 14 August, 2011 Definate yellow, but not deserving of a straight red. Look at it this way - he went for the ball, not the player and the opposing player was running into the challenge wholeheartedly so there was little time to get his foot out of the way. He didn't and perhaps he deliberately didn't try to move his foot out of the way fast enough, but it was not in the same league as some of the potentially leg breaking tackles I have seen in the past that have only received a yellow. This
rooney Posted 14 August, 2011 Posted 14 August, 2011 Unfortunately, Chappers let himself and his team mates down on this occasion. We hope he will learn from this whilst, sitting in the stand over the next 3 games.
Mozz Posted 14 August, 2011 Posted 14 August, 2011 Don't even think it was a case of leaving the foot in. To me it looked like he cleared the ball, pulled the foot back out and then in a second movement pushed it back into the player. Definite red.
Weston Saint Posted 14 August, 2011 Posted 14 August, 2011 Red in my opinion having viewed it on BBC. Doubt he will appeal it.
hutch Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 This being SaintsWeb n'all, I assume it's OK to vote even though I haven't actually seen the tackle.
Torres Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 Don't even think it was a case of leaving the foot in. To me it looked like he cleared the ball, pulled the foot back out and then in a second movement pushed it back into the player. Definite red. Agreed - I think there are clearly 2 movements there, 1 to clear the ball and another th stamp on the guy's thigh. Chaplow even seems to have a little look to take aim. At the time I couldn't see why he'd been sent off as it appeared he'd booted the ball clear and then just collided with McEvely (sp) but having seen the replay it was a clear red card. Silly boy and lucky it didn't cost us the 3 points, even if we should have been about 4-0 up by then.
Pilchards Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 Should never of been booked, that sort of thing happens everytime at my Taekwondo club.
Saint J 77 Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 It was a silly thing to do and could have cost us at the end there. Fortunatley for him the team held strong and kept the 3 points. Hopefully Adkins will give him a good talking to and he will not do anything like that again after his ban is over.
Window Cleaner Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 Won't vote as the incident isn't well covered on the Barnsley player full 90, but some of the tackles he put in last season would lead one to believe that he has a propensity for these sort of scissors tackles. So Nemesis has probably caught up with him.
Wurzel Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 The other player was running straight at him and had Chaplow not booted the ball (and then put his boot down on the opponent), they'd have just run into each other. If his opponent wasn't near enough for a collision, how was Chaplow able to make contact ? I think he was unlucky, the natural defence against a collision is to put something up to fend off the impact (usually an arm), Chaplow in the split second after playing the ball held his boot there because it was already raised and between his body and his opponent's. He was slightly off-balance and falling forward, and led with the boot he'd put up into the player's thigh area. That's what I love about football. How wouyld video replays ever help with so many different interpretations? Absolutely nailed on red. In my view other player wasn't running into him. Barnsley guy went for the ball, had one leg low at full stretch, no momentum, and his whole body weight was leaning back and away from Chaplow trying to avoid him. Definitely a second movement from Chaplow which looked to me like he was trying to "avoid" a collision by putting his foot and weight into him then launching himself backwards using Barnsley guys thigh/****** as a springboard
Saint Garrett Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 How can anyone say it wasn't worthy of a red card? If he'd just jumped got the ball and then gone down and the player had been underneath him, but he wasnt you can see his leg go sideways to make sure he caught him, it was a horrendous challenge. If someone had done that to Lallana at St. Marys, it would have been 'the worst challenge in history'

saint1977 Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 Definate red card and whilst I like Chaplow, he has to be careful that he doesn't waste his talent as Prutton did when red mist descends. Michael Brown, for example, has to resort to being an animal as he lost any pace or ability he had three years ago. As we saw from Gobern's stupidity last season, Adkins will only tolerate that sort of thing for so long.

SaintRobbie Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 No brainer - he followed through with studs… red card
Smirking_Saint Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 I suggest either you go to the game or at least watch the highlights before commenting. This was nothing like a scissor tackle FFS! No, but then it was nothing like having his leg extended as the opposing player ran onto him. Him quite obviously kicked his leg out towards the other player in order to make his mark. IMO he has developed a bit of a violent streak as of late, during the Leeds game I wondered how long he would stay on. This needs to be cut out of his game, there is tackling strongly and grabbing a game by the neck but thats different to being reckless. Deserved red, and seeing the options we have in CM he may regret it.
The9 Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 Won't vote as the incident isn't well covered on the Barnsley player full 90, but some of the tackles he put in last season would lead one to believe that he has a propensity for these sort of scissors tackles. So Nemesis has probably caught up with him. It may or may not have been a red, but one thing it definitely wasn't was a "scissors tackle", which is a two footer wrapping your legs around some part of the opponent. Also not sure how replays are supposed to be the panacea for controversy when I've watched it back a couple of times and still can't categorically state he definitely meant it - but the point is that according to the International Board just the recklessness Chaplow showed is a red card, contact or not (and there definitely was contact, in case anyone wants to misinterpret that bit). So with that in mind, it was a red, but the interpretation is an ass.
The9 Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 seeing the options we have in CM he may regret it. Not sure why, when he's played in both league games this season as a sub on the right of midfield and was clearly at best third choice even at the tail end of last season ? I'm quite pleased that it might give De Ridder a chance to play in his preferred position, he's not had much impact up front yet, but then with a propensity to play disguised through balls he wouldn't have anyone to pass to anyway.
skintsaint Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 Red card without a doubt. He knew what he was doing and it is a nasty part of his game.
skings80 Posted 15 August, 2011 Posted 15 August, 2011 from the video angle i saw it looked like just a bit of a late high foot, but i guess the ref had the best view...
georgeweahscousin Posted 16 August, 2011 Posted 16 August, 2011 Interesting that Jamie Carragher got away with this:- http://youtu.be/tOObVA1gXww No attempt to play the ball whatsoever....
saint1977 Posted 16 August, 2011 Posted 16 August, 2011 He offered Gobern a new contract. So Saints could get some compensation from the end of his contract. With Morgan signing a new deal and Cork being a top target once promotion was secured Gobern's prospects weren't looking good. He's gone to a good club in Huddersfield, hope he and them do well this year.
