Beattie

Dr Who?

Recommended Posts

Ok Ok I know this has been posted elsewhere, but I have been through the 10 pages, and I cannot find the old thread.

I am not one to start rumours as I cannot see the point of it, but Beattie was out and about in Southampton tonight, and the romour is he is looking for a return! He would love to come back.

What is happening with him, is he still on the books at Blackpool on loan, or has he returned to Rangers? Rangers played this lunchtime, so he made a pretty sharpish return to the south coast! If he is still at Blackpool then they are playing tomorrow.

Weird one but I think he is out of favour or injured as does not seem to be in any Rangers or Blackpool squads.

Seems a waste when he could do a job for us in this league. The way things are going at the moment perhpas we should continue to move forward with Brand new signings and no egos?

Think he probably knows that he cannot cut it at the top anymore, but the ego and upsetting the balance of the team would be my worry. The current squad all work well for each other and there seems to be a great team spirit.

I have no doubt that he could do a great job in the NPC though.

with connelys form and lambert being a better player now i cant see him getting in the team, we need a quick striker if we get a new one fortes are only really quick impact striker we have unless you throw guly up there, but with bannard also to come back it would be silly to buy a striker whos going to expect regular 1st team football, we need to sign a young talent whos going to accept rotation, someone 22/23 not 33/34.

Take off the Saints tinted glasses for a moment & forget he ever played for us... now would you take a player who is 33/34 but not really played in the last 2 years because he's out of favour and injured at a number of clubs and who hasn't really done anything scoring wise in the last 3-4 years. Plus the fact he's so motivated to get back that he's in a nightclub at the start of the season....

....move on, there's far better out there. Yes he was great when he was here. I just do not get why people keep harping back to should we sign Beattie other than they've had a few drinks on a Saturday night and haven't pulled. Especially when we're on a record number of wins at sat top of the table at the moment.

I would be a bit disappointed if we did sign him tbh. Cant see it happening anyway, Nigel seems to be getting players onto the bus who are early in their career rather than near the end of it.

Agreed. Players making " Messianic or Prodigal " returns to a club looks good in history books and movies but in reality - it rarely happens with any degree of success and often only in dire circumstances by managers who like to sing Auld Land Syne to the fans tune...I think NA is far more realistic than that and doesn't have any sentiment for JB or any former Saints player.

the few Saints cases that I can recall directly are;

Alan Ball's second time signing, Mick Channon's return and Kevin Davies reverse transfer to/from Blackburn...and the return of

Craig Maskell (when Bally was manager)... none of which were very memorable .

Sorry Beatts. Nice while it lasted..Find yourself a lower league team where you can get yourself some games..before it's too late.

I don't think anybody who has played at the level beattie has should be rejected without at least given a chance to prove they still could be an asset to the club,if he's free and he doesn't demand silly wages then he should possibly be given a go,perhaps on a monthly rolling contract.

I think it would be silly to dismiss an experienced footballer just because Of his age......after all it was only a few months ago that lots of you were getting erectile about the Michael Owen rumour and he's about the same age as Beattie.

You're right - I'd totally forgotten the years '80 - '82 when he was part of that side that finished 8th, 6th and 7th in the top division.

I remember Keegan, Golac, Armstrong, Moran, Williams etc. but had totally forgotten Channon.

Time we moved on, loved him when he was here before - don't however won't him back

I'll never forget travelling up to Chelsea on New Year's Day 2002 and watching Beatts take Chelsea apart - with the help of the little Latvian! Beatts scored a superb free kick to open the scoring on 7 minutes - but we still went in at HT 2-1 down. We came out 2nd half though and were on fire. Marian & CMFG added a couple more about the hour mark before Beatts finished the scoring late on with his 2nd and our 4th. Brillaint display - and at a time when Chelsea were red-hot favourites and we (supposedly) had no chance! They had the likes of Terry, Lampard, Hasselbaink, Gudjohnsen, Gallas, etc.

Great day for everyone there up from the south coast - and I got a lot of stick up at Stamford Bridge before the game with some nasty mouthy London geezers (without going into too much detail). Still, that was a great display - and it's the one game out of many that I will always remember Beattie for more than any other. He was sheer class that day - sheer class.

Thinking back, didnt Beattie come back to us from blackburn? And after he couldnt buy a goal for them, he suddenly started scoring for fun here? Seems so long ago now...

That was Kevin Davies (still playing in the premiere now) Beattie was actually a young make weight in the original Davies to blackburn deal. At the time I think he had only played 3 games for Blackburn and was better known as a previous olympic swimming hopeful.

I watched the Celtic Legends v. Manure Legends game in mid week on itv4. Henrik Larsen scored a hat trick and bossed the game at times. Agreed he was playing against and alongside mainly ex-players and celebreties, but that in itself means you need to be on your game as they are more unpredictable. His age..................... 39. Most of the taters agreed that he could still do a job at quite a high level. Admittedly Beats was no Larsen but given a mutually agreeable contract he could still provide the squad with some valuable experience if needed. Perhaps a pay as you play arrangement and if he dosen't want that type of deal nothing lost by either party.

..ssh say that last bit in a quiet voice. Mick was 12 years at The Dell and then for another 3 seasons after his return.

He also clocked up the second highest apps. 602.....and holds the club record for most goals 228..unlikely to be beaten nowadays.

On!... and Mick's 45 apps. for England (21 goals) was only surpassed by Peter Shilton's 49 caps (whilst he was at the club.)

you didn't really forget him - did you?

JB came to us when he was 20 y.o. A Blackburn sub. who couldn't get a regular game with them (cost £1 million + a 25% sell on clause ) that most of us didn't know about until he was transferred to Everton 7 years later.

He managed 5 goals in 22 starts in his first season, but was shut out in the second when the forward line included Mark Hughes, Hassan Katchloul and Stuart Ripley.... and the in-form strikers were Marian Pahars and Kevin Davies.

By 2000-01... he had established himself as a regular and was top scorer with 11 goals from 29 starts (incl.10 in 10 games)

He was always a bit "in and out" and started the 2002-03 season going 9 games without scoring...then began a blitz with

11 goals in 8 starts (incl.hat-trick) and finished the season with 23 Prem.goals (best English player) and was third in the Golden Boot comp. for top Prem.goalscorer (won by Thierry Henry).

As we said ..nice memories, but I can't see NA signing him again ..not even for " Old Time sake."

If he is fit and hungry to play then I would love to have him back.

Why? Because age simply is not a barrier in the Championship. Look at KP for example, he's just turned 38 and scored a brace this weekend.

He's not had the best couple of years, but at the end of the day he has more than enough quality to add something to our squad. David Connolly has barely scraped 50 appearances anywhere in the last four years, but we've kept him because he is quality - simple as.

To suggest he's past it because he's 33 is bonkers really.

Of course not - it was sarcasm. I know it is the lowest form of wit but I was upset that you said that my all-time favourite Saint's second spell with us was not memorable. I love the man.

Mr.Beattie was at Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley yesterday with his wife and kids and his in laws, i had a quick chat with him because he parked next to me. He is injured at the moment and is hoping for a move back to england from rangers. His agent is offering him to clubs and rangers want him off their books because his wages are too high. He'll probably end up in the championship. I asked him would he like to come back to saints and he said 'of course' if they contacted him.

Always liked Beatts and he was very good for Saints - and vice versa.

Appreciate he's injured at present but when fit would have thought he would he would walk into the Rangers team considering how dire Scottish football is.

Never understood why half decent players -Ledley and Hooper come to mind- want to go to such a footballing backwater - 3 or 4 Old Firm games, an early exit

from Champions League and thats the season over and done with.

I would have a fit Beatts back - he could help the cause for certain. However, if he is injured then the issue really is for how long? He would have to be willing to fit in with the salary structure now at Saints if he wanted a move, but also Saints would need to be certain he would have the determination to work hard to get match fit and thus be able to play. I couldn't see more than a one year deal on the table - in fact I wouldn't give him anything more than a pay as you play type deal.

Better than Beattie would be bringing Kevin Davies back. He's a better player, better character than he was when we let him go. He's just the type of player we need to get us out of the Championship and for the first season in the Premiership.

Of course he's a better player, he's still playing in the Premier League for a start. Not a hope in hell we could get him this year, or any other Championship club for that matter.

This good job he could dop for us. As far as I know we have enough turnstile operators and the ticket office seems well enough staffed. I cant think of any others that he would now be able to help us with

Interesting.

In some ways it would be nice for him to come back and help play a part in trying to get us promoted. He didn't exactly leave the club on a high when he moved to Everton.

Davies may be a better player but unlike Beattie ..Kevin Davies was glad to get away. Read somewhere, he wanted to " get back up North "....

He didn't hit it off with Strachan, so we don't know what the "aftertaste " of that is, but I wouldn't expect him to be in the top 10 on NAs wanted list

Old, slow, been injured, massive ego, massive wages, only had a few decent seasons in his whole career and he doesn't fit in with the way we currently play.

There, 7 reasons why I wouldn't want him back.

We have a great team and seem to have great team spirit right now, we don't need anyone to spoil that, we need young hungry players.
