Dearne Valley Saint Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 Agreed. Barnsley only realised they were in a game last 4 mins. Comfortable win but a goal or two more more would've been nice. Good win, bring on Ipswich

Dr Who? Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 Now it is great to be top of the league and win away from home, but we should have been out of sight in that game, and nearly ended up with a point! Crab Lungs Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 Seaborne got mentioned a lot today, in a positive sense too... can't wait to hear what the people who were also at the game made of him. And in other news... The Cortese matchday programme debacle once again continues to affect Saints form. He's ruining our club FFS

Saint Since '51 Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 But not the win of Championship leaders ???? Surely exactly the win of championship leaders. A ground out victory instead of lamenting 2 or 3 points lost. They didn't have a shot on goal until the 93rd minute! Don't know what second half you were watching if you think they didn't have a shot till the 93rd minute. Were you there? Good win yes. Great entertainment. Great first half yes. But Barnsley will finish in the bottom 6, so get real. If someone had walked in at half time, they wouldn't have thought they were watching the Championship leaders. If someone had walked in at half time, they wouldn't have thought they were watching the Championship leaders. We've just been promoted, we have no right to win there and we've come up and adjusted very well. It just feels bloody arrogant for us to come up league and start writing off ''Little Barnsley, Little Millwall'' as ''easy games'' ''if we're troubled in these games we're not good enough'' etc.. Your expectation surely cannot be for us to be serious championship title contenders? It's great we're there now, but I think all realistic fans know we won't stay there....so I'm not quite sure what you're getting at.

dubai_phil Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 Wow, Our fate is now clearly in our hands, just carry on and win all our remaining games, piece of cake. Catch us if you can suckers! Well OK, Seaborne sounded immense. Davis 2 cracking saves at the death, Chaplow you Twonk. For a side supposed to be well drilled and tactically adept we seemed to fail to get to grips with the change in Barnsley's formation at HT from 4-1-4-1 to 4-4-2 (DM) Think we sounded a bit too composed and even complacent. The fact we ended up with our backs to the wall may actually be a damned good thing, we dug deep held on and kept the 3 points, think they may take that on board and be more clinical now up front. Think the reaction is one of luvvin it Almost as if fate is giving us something back at last for all we've been through Whilst knowing deep down that one bad ref decision or sloppy mistake means we'll come back to reality. But feck right now, WOOT!

SouthportSaint Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 My first game this season and I was amazed at the quality of the passing, the movement and the invention. We are not talking about passing square just to keep possession. This was quick accurate forward passing and moving, constantly creating space and openings. A definite touch of the Arsenal, including a bit of a tendency to want to walk the ball into the net. Compared with last season one big difference was having a good playing surface away from home. This will really help us this season. Very impressed with Cork and Richardson. Lallana and Guly showed their tricks but everybody looked comfortable on the ball. Nervy last 5 minutes. I know Barnsley were poor but even an equaliser would not have changed the fact that Saints were a joy to watch. Well done Nigel Adkins for choosing this way to play. adethorne Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 Just back. Where do i start, our passsing game today was top drawer and how we were only 1 up at half time still shows we are not quite there. That said it was absultely brilliant to watch, crowd very vocal and got behind the team well. Even barnsley fans applauding some of our pass and move moments. Moment of madness from chaplow i think, from our end it looked like he took him out, though no physio on and as soon as chaplow walked he was up and about. Cork, llalana and work rate of lambert, yes lambert was brilliant and seaborne a rock at end although had few dodgy moments early on. suewhistle Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 Well, that's my last game until Christmas but some delightful football, retention of the ball, passing and movement off the ball even if many moves didn't quite come off. Never worried until the last few minutes and I'd already thought we needed to get that second to kill the game. The Chaplow red I'd like to see again as I thought he'd done a big swing and cleared the ball and got the guy on the follow through. I think I'm revising my view of where we'll finish, perhaps even confident now that we'll do well. Oh, and to all those people complaining about the songs at home last week I thought the variety was ok, and pretty good volume too; I helped as much as I could but as I was driving i was sober.... AndyNorthernSaints Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 Saints played very well today and should have killed game off in the 2nd half. Passed the ball very well and at times it was men against boys. Lallana, Guly and Cork played well and stand out players in defence were Richardson and Seaborne.Have previously had doubts about those two players but not today. Didn't have best view of sending off but Barnsley fans i spoke to after who were sat near incident said it was a clear red card. Nice beers in Dove Inn before as well and good away support today. Shroppie Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 Thought the whole team played brilliantly. Some great individual displays but the togetherness is such a strong factor. Was very impressed with Connolly - only problem was his reading of the game and speed of thought was sometimes too much for others - two lovely balls into the box could easily have led to goals with a quicker reaction. If we're in the market for a striker, that's what we need.
shurlock Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 (edited) Back from the game- more comfortable than the scoreline and the final flurry in the last 5mins suggested. Many games last season were more challenging than today - perhaps there is some truth in the idea that as big fishes in a small pond, teams raised their game and played negatively against us. For me, the 40 or so passes (maybe not that many) in the middle of the 2nd half, involving the whole team, summed up the performance. Patient, incisive, fluid, proper team play. As the chants made clear, we really were taking the pi $$. Agree Seaborne had a massive game - stayed composed and bailed out Harding a few times. Richardson also had an excellent game - looks a totally different from the player last season who mi**** passes and looked dull and lethargic. Keith Hill's is basically to hit long diagonal balls behind the fullbacks and Richardson was equal to everything - the highlight was a 40 yard cross-field run to cut out a ball down the left. Lallana also had a very good game, though was perhaps a bit wasteful in front of goal. Connolly, notwithstanding a few dodgy offside decisions, was his busy, clever self. For me Cork was MOTM - if his form continues, he will be an absolute gem. Closed, challenged and never gave away a cheap free-kick and showed some Lallana-esque touches going forward. Cork allows for a proper division of labour between CMs, getting the best out of Hammmond. And where last season the ball seemed to bogged down in treacle in midfield, Cork ensures that we play at a high tempo and distribute the ball with economy. Hopefully we will bring in a pacey CF. Our patience in possession sucked Barnsley in on numerous occasions, creating space behind the defence that would have ruthlessly been exploited with a ball over the top. At times, it appears that everybody is dropping deep which can leave us a bit thin up top. Having a bit of pace makes the opposition think twice about playing a high line to counter the bodies in midfield. Otherwise, RM is probably our biggest headache at the moment. Guly looked much more dangerous when he moved to a more central position, often dropping deep to pick the ball up from the back 4 (similar). Given Guly isn't a natural RM, he seems to have developed a better understanding of his responsibilities playing with Butterfield - that rapport isn't quite there with Frazer. Hopefully, that's just teething problems. De Ridder is an obvious solution - and his first touch, an exquisite spin on the box to put in AL makes him a really exciting prospect; however, lAdkins played him as a centre forward. Some say that this is because Adkins doesn't trust the defensive aspects of De Ridder's wing play; for me, it highlights that once Connolly gets subbed and as long as Barney is injured, we're short up top. Most of the Barnsley fans were under no illusions that we were the superior side, though they were also pretty clear that Chaplow deserved a straight red (it happened in the other half, so hard to tell where we were). Only two games but all round, a great day. Edited 13 August, 2011 by shurlock
Saints foreva Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 Brilliant away support. The stand looked to be about 2/3s full and the stadium announcer said the total attendance was over 10,000. Must have been at least 1500 Saints, if not more. The home fans were very quiet and only seemed to come alive when they wanted a free kick for something or other. Nexstar Posted 13 August, 2011 Share Posted 13 August, 2011 Home! One hell of a long day but, of course, worth it in the end. I thought for 90% of the game we were incredibly comfortable and a second goal would have ended the game, no doubt. Chaplow was sent off and we sort of accepted that Barnsley would attack, attack, attack and so we dug deep and repelled the lot. Had resigned myself to an equaliser with the crazy head-tennis and scrambles that occurred in stoppage time. Lallana was great, but for me Jack Cork was the star of the show. He ran the midfield for both attack and defence and played plenty of sublime balls. Despite one slip-up near the end Richardson was absolutely solid throughout and had his best game in a Saints shirt. I can see him becoming our regular RB. Kelvin had a fairly quiet game but was there when needed and his distribution seemed to be much improved today. De Ridder looked sharp as a knife when he came on and will produce great things when he gets a league start. Guly was Guly - He blew hot and cold throughout. IMO he should play CAM/CF or not at all. Right midfield should be given to a right midfielder. Overall it was a very good performance and we are certainly developing the 'Southampton Way'. Think I saw the away attendance at 1,134 and we made some good noise. Football League Show and bed.

Saint Fan CaM Posted 14 August, 2011 Share Posted 14 August, 2011 (edited) Got back in time to see the FL show - long day on the coach, but a fantastic win again. We dominated play until 5mins from the end. Seaborne did have a good game TBF. Cork was my MOTM - really solid player with skills to boot. Connolly was everywhere. De Ridder looked great, but I want to see him out on the wing where he can do most damage. As far as Chappers is concerned, he went for the ball clearing it (i.e. perfectly legit), but then connected with their player on the way through - their player went down rolling around theatrically which didn't help, but the reason he got sent off was because he pushed back off the player rather than make it look like he tried to avoid the contact. It was not a sending off offence frankly and to cap it off, there was no physio sent on and their player got up and carried on as if nothing had happened immediately after Chaplow got the red. Don't blame the ref exactly, but it was a harsh decision given some of Barnsleys poor and dangerous tackles early on in the game. Great three points - top of the table - Pompey lose. Superb day! Griffo Posted 14 August, 2011 Share Posted 14 August, 2011 Disappointed with the away support today. First away game and we just manage to scrape over 1,000, and then most of the people travelling all that way decide they're going to sit down. Should have been out of sight in the first half, and at times some of the football in the second half was absolutely class, just a shame we couldn't have wrapped the game up earlier. This Charming Man Posted 14 August, 2011 Share Posted 14 August, 2011 Totally dominated the game for the first 85mins, just a bit disappointing we didn't create more chances. We kept the ball well and outclassed what admittedly was a poor Barnsley side. Should've been more comfortable and not having to hang on for dear life for the last 10mins. Jack Cork was my MOTM. Covered every blade of grass again and kept possession of the ball really well. Lallana was involved in most attacks and key bits of play as per usual and Fonte was a rock as he always is. Good performance, shame we didn't get a few more goals, which would've been fully deserved.
