NC is going for promotion this season, isnt he ?

He's not p*ssing about, it seems.

If he gets another quality CB and another striker, this team is going to look pretty f*cking invincible.

I just hope Adkins doesnt have mental blocks about the best 11 to pick, because he is going to have some tough choices.

I want "our Alpine" back, you are clearly an impostor.

Of course he is, what would be the point otherwise?

I think there are plenty of people on here who genuinely thought we would be targetting a mid-table place. Most would have accepted it at the end of the season of course, but there were quite a few who said we should rule out promotion and consolidate!

NA and NC look to have played a blinder as far as transfers are concerned (so far), and if we do get a new striker and a Jaidi-like CB come on board, well, that would be amazing.

I noticed earlier that the bookies now have us third/fourth for promotion.

I think iff we do go on to add a quality CB (Gorkks) and a quality striker (Maynard) then the bare minimum you would expect would be playoffs. That would be about £1m on Cork, £1.8m on Fox, £500k for De Ridder, that is £3m+ before we even got to the CB and Striker. If we get those i'd imagine our summer spending would be near to the £10m mark. WHich is a feck load of money spent, possibly the most a manager will have spent in a summer here? Let's hope those deals go through as would make a good team great imo.

Who are you, and what have you done with Alps?

We want to compete, but Promotion isn't the be-all and end all this year. It's about assembling (and retaining) a squad of players that can challenge at the top of this league, and have the potential to grow into premiership players - so they can be together for a long period of time. We followed this method to the letter when we were in L1, and we're doing it again now.

We'll give it a good go this year, for sure - but if we don't make it this time round I won't start crying, I'll just look forward to our title challenge next season!

I expect some fans and the club to have different ideas though. All club chairmen will want promotion (at least in public) supporters can choose what they want to aim for. Personally I'm in no hurry to get back to the PL (which I see as responsible for all that is wrong with modern football in this country) I would never expect the club to think like that though.

Did you really not believe him the first time Alps?

He's talked about nothing else than the 5 year plan since he came....

It's not bull sh*t to him . A man with a vision cannot be denied.

So is this the new positive Alps??? I do agree, 2 more players and we will be serious promotion contenders........

He's certainly building a very handy team that is free scoring, I agree with you.

I'm also very thankful that we have wealthy and financially sensible owners and a tactically aware/intelligent manager who I have a lot of faith in and a very useful squad of players.

Think about the last time we had a decent squad in this division when we had a blithering idiot in charge who'd have had Danny Fox at CB, Lambert on the centre of midfield and Jack Cork as a striker. Then dropped Lallana from the entire squad after he'd scored a hat-trick in the previous game. Oh and would have still been playing a now 35-year old Jermaine Wright at RB.

We haven't been in such a good position in a very long time

Not quite. My recollection is we went all out to get promoted under Pardew, and when he didn't do it, he got fired. That Pardew season was patently not about planning for the season after, it was to get promoted there and then.

Thankfully, Cortese is not listening to the wallies that suggest we have to have a season in the division to acclimatise to the league so we're all nice and ready the season after or maybe the season after that. If getting ready and bedded into the division was really that important, Coventry City would be the runaway favourites for the title.

We've got a good bunch of players and a bloody good team and a good manager. Go for it. This season.

however if you look at the Morgan signing thread and read the France Football piece, he says we are going for promotion this time round and the play-offs are the least objective.

But it's ok to consolidate in the Prem though right? It's what all teams outside the top 4 do isn't it? ;)

I think it's pretty obvious NC doesn't want to hang about in the championship. I think Adkins will get a little more rope than pardew did though. All will depend on how we do this season. If we go long spells looking like we haven't got a clue and fail to reach the play offs then he will be toast. But if we keep progressing and only miss out as there are better teams above us then he may give him another shot.

What will happen next season though? Say we somehow manage promotion this season, what's the target then? Sell up for big profit or go on to try and achieve something special?

Times are getting exciting IMO

Agree with Alps on this.

And IF (or is it when) we sign that CB & Striker, gonna have some fun reading those "no ambition threads" from earlier in the summer.

To be fair, that thread was started by Professor and consisted of him being a tw*t and most people shouting him down about it and telling him to get real.

EDIT: Here's the link: http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?31091-Ambition-where-s-the-evidence

Quite funny really, barely anyone agrees with the quite obvious nonsense he was spouting. Spitting and wailing in early June that we hadn't made enough transfers; where have I heard that before? A certain OP was curiously totally in agreement with him on page 1.......

@fourthofficial on twitter has said that southampton are his tip to win the league at 16-1!!! He reckons he's got £10 on it!

He has been pretty good with his predicitons and at the end of saying this he hashtagged '#nickymaynard' he was also the first to announce our bid for players meaning fox and rodriguez. Also prodecited cesc fab and nasri leaving before the weekend and oxo going to arsenal before it was mentioned anywhere that day!

I know what i'm doing with the spare fiver i have in my pocket!!!

It's the third year of the five year plan already, and there's no holding back so it seems. There is the part of me that fears we may be trying to show our hand too soon and that we may not be able to sustain it beyond this season if all doesn't go to plan.

And there is the other side of me that is seriously excited.

So who are we going to ship out then? We seem to be over supplied at left back now. Surely at least one should be expecting to get off the bus now! I have a gut feeling it will be Harding

That's funny, because my gut feeling says Dickson! :D

It's the whole Harding/Dickson debate rearing it's marmite-esque head again!

We are going for survival first, anything above 17th would be a bonus in our first season. Too many people are getting carried away with our first league win against a very average side.

Please stop with your ridiculous wind-up charade will you. It's thoroughly tedious, as are you.

Not a wind up at all. Survival has to be our first priority and thereafter mid table would be acceptable as we build for the future. We have a long eason ahead and we will see.

Yep, reckon you're right. We should have appointed Hoddle last season.

Hoddle was the right choice in 2004. Sadly for SFC, the clown Wurzel was appointed and that set the course for our near oblivion. The vocal minority have still not put their hands up and admitted to their part in the near destruction of this club.

Time has moved on, Hoddle would not be the right appointment today and NA deserves his chance.

Well done for changing your mind.

I assume you're talking about me as having an "anti-Cortese" agenda. Strange then, that I was supportive of the club in that very thread. As I have been in various other threads. How very odd.

I've just been through that "Ambition - where's the evidence?" thread. It's a good read. I know some people were a bit pessimistic, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Anyways, Alps has already changed his mind in public. What about the rest of the naysayers? Feeling better now?

I've said upper mid-table for this season so far. I think one game (admittedly a game we won very well) into the season and a new LB is a bit early for me to start changing my mind that we are now dead on certs for auto promotion........

..but Pardew did get to the Prem. Clearly just a mismatch more than a fail on either parties side.

Will enjoy clapping onto the SMS pitch next year, did us proud.

You don't think we'll get promoted then?

Ah, I see, you reckon Newcastle will stay up. Gotcha...
