You all seem very confident of maynard coming to Saints, can't see it myself, dream on !

Confident, no. Hopeful, possibly. As long as the manager genuinely wants him here and the chairman concurs then I'm pretty hopeful we'll sign him. We will find out soon enough.

'Maynard is coming'

He isn't.

Really, he isn't.

How do you know?

Going from every tweet fourth_official has posted that i have read he is very much in the know.

I expect you very much are not.

oh yes he is....oh no he isn't...he's behind you!!!! All these players we could potenially sign has become a bit of a pantomine hasn't it. I would love to see us sign Maynard, but until its confirmed on the OS I will put this one down as very unlikely as it seems far to good to be true.

Fair comment. We will probably have another signing or two, and most likely they will be players nobody has even thought of in connection with us yet.

To be honest, if we spend 5m+ on a champ player with only 1 year left on his contract we're either very rich or very stupid. I hope it's the former. I bet 80% of the people jumping on the Maynard bandwagon had never heard of him until we were linked with him, in Nigel I trust though and if he wants Maynard and gets NC to spend big then I hope it pays off, I'm pretty clueless about him like most of the people on here about him, we can all look at stats but who's watched him, I bet most of the people getting excited here about him have seen nothing but figures on a website.

To be fair with regards to the £5m, most Burnley fans think he's worth far more and he's only 22. Looks like a cracking prospect.

From Wiki:

'Nicholas David "Nicky" Maynard (born 11 December 1986 in Winsford, Cheshire) is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward for his own club, the Nicky Maynard Experience and currently lives in Portishead, Somerset.'

Sounds like he will be a team player then!

Surely we wouldn't buy both, that would be about 8 million, and we would have about 6 strikers.

True, but one is injury prone and one could be facing a prison sentence. Guly can play out right so that leaves only Lambert as a dedicated forward.

Admittredly, I'm stretching the truth quite a bit here but I would love nothing more than to see Jay-Rod and The Nicky Maynard Experience snapped up by Southampton.

Must admit I like the look of Jay Rod. Spent a few mins reading the Burnley forum - they rate him extremely highly indeed. Fingers crossed.

Their media guy has tweeted that he is NOT for sale and that apparently came from the chairmans mouth!

However money talks I guess

Let's not forget that the ultimate plan is to have this club run sustainably.

We should not go down the route the skates did and the route that West Ham may well end up taking.

Frankly, until we were linked with him i had never heard of Maynard.

I would prefer that we do shrewd good value business that is sustainable in the long term than throw money at players that are a minor improvement on what we have. It wouldn't suprise me if we didn't make any "massive" signings until the January window as the team we have can, and i believe will, hold its own.

What makes you think Maynard is only a "minor improvement"? You admit yourself that you hadn't heard of him, yet he is a well established Championship striker.

Those note knowing who he is should check out a few of his goals last season - he looks a cracking player, get on youtube

I'm in two minds about Maynard. I haven't seen much of him but plenty of good minds on here rate him highly.

My worry is that if he's to come here for the kind of fee being discussed, they have to negotiate a longer term contract with him. Here's where the Club's salary structure could be challenged, and that could create some resentments that could damage the great chemistry we seem to have in the dressing room.

I guess that's going to happen sooner or later but it's still a rather worrying prospect.

Could this be a strategy? Appear to go for both and use the "well, we'll just go for Rodriguez/Maynard [delete as appropriate] if you're going to quote us a ridiculous price" line if they ask too much? Another NC masterstroke, what a guy.

Exactly

If we get both I can see it being a case of replacing Rickie and Conners when we get to the Prem and they will be out strike force. Love the fact we're getting youngster in that will will be a massive force to be reckoned with in 3+ years time when we're challenging for top 10 in the prem!

Didn't they say on their website that they would only sell players if the offers was for a higher amount than they valued them at?

On the face of it signing both Rodriguez and Maynard would seem to be mental but Rodriguez can play out wide, or we could play a front three. The other thing is Lambert definitely wouldn't be a guaranteed starter and I suppose we all accept he is at the moment. Still can't see that we'll end up getting both though......
