Saints sign Danny Fox - OS

I'm told we are going to play an exciting new style on Saturday. The line up will be:

---------------------Davis-----------------

---------------------Fonte - Fox - Dickson

---------------------Hammond-Lallana - Harding

---------------------Guly ---------------Holmes

----------------Lambert - Connolly--------

I worry that we could be short of left-sided players on the bench if we have an injury though.

Oops... forgot about De Ridder so we are okay after all.

Dickson, Harding and Fox are all better at attacking than defending it seems!

Either one of the three is going to be leaving or one is going to be playing as a left winger. I would guess that either Harding is leaving or Dickson will be playing as a left winger.

I am guessing Holmes will be on his way shortly along with Forte. With Lallana and De Ridder capable of playing on either wing I think it will be a case of Fox being first choice left back, Harding second choice left back and Dickson second choice left winger.

I would love to see players like Forte and Holmes leave to make way for players like Maynard and Rodriguez!

Reactions from Burnley fans:

"I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. Danny Fox was one of Laws' signings- over-rated and overpaid! We have made some money on him and already have a replacement in Easton who is a far better player. Fox is totally one footed, not at all creative and usually out of position. DannyWho?"

"He was good but not that good, excellent business!"

"Fox wasn't the best, let's be honest - he was a couple of stray passes away from being #1 target of the boo boys. If the board and EH don't have someone good lined up to replace him, however, then without a shadow of doubt they will be the target"

"Fox was Laws best signing but wasn't fit to lace (Stephen) Jordans boots"

No-one seems to have made this point, but apologies if I have missed it...

Many people are talking about our 'first choice' left back and left midfielder, team, etc., but I don't think that is the way that Adkins sees things or does things. Clearly his team choices vary depending upon the opposition, whether we are at home or away and on which set of tactics he decides to play.

I think you will find that in some matches Adkins will prefer Fox, in other matches he will prefer Harding and in some matches he will prefer Dickson. Having said that I think Dickson will be used more on the wing. I suspect we will sometimes see a combination of two of them playing together and that this will occasionally be to give Lallana a rest or because Lallana is played in the middle.

The key thing I think is that Adkins is looking for flexibility in his tactics.

Agree with you. I hope Dickson stays....he has more athleticism and scope for improvement against better opposition than Harding.

Quite like Dickson but think this may be the end of him.

Dickson was woeful against Torquay on Tuesday and doesn't look anything like the player he did last year. Maybe he knew that we were in for a LB and being third choice is end of career stuff. Guess he'll be gone soon. It was obvious from the Tuesday game that both Butterfield and Seaborne are being left behind, can't see either of them getting a look-in except through default injuries to first choices. Aaron Martin gets better by the match so will be hard to displace although Richardson looks limited and we may need a good RB as well as this new LB.

Hate the tattoos 'though didn't think we'd want that kind of person on out patch? Times they sure are a changin'

No reason why Dickson couldn't be backup on the left-wing' date=' especially if Puncheon goes. [b']Can't assume Holmes will always be fit [/b]as a backup.

HE IS FIT. He played in several practice games AND on Tuesday night and looked good (acc.to all reports).

Surely we can put this slur behind us he is still young-ish with a career ahead of him. Av.age of team is still over 25.

The reaction of Cov fans is interesting.

They rated him as premiership standard when he left them. Was a crusading left back who did defend and provided a definite forward threat. He is also a free kick specialist, so we now have back-up there if Rickie is not in the frame.

They feel he's not as good as he was 2/3 years ago but agree he could be playing at a higher level. They were livid when he went to Celtic.

It's not a slur. He is fit yes, but seems more likely than others to get injured. Relying on him not breaking down would be naive.

Here is a bit of Fox action from SKY before he signed for Celtic. Good goal :)

Looking at that excellent goal he looks more like a winger than a left back.

Maybe an alternative position for him?

If we can get a quality CB + ST then I think I'll be upgrading my end of season prediction from 6-8th to top 4.

Makes you wonder if our reserve team could beat Pompey's half a team now...perhaps we could offer to take their place in the division as Southampton B if we get promoted and they continue to struggle against big clubs like Barnet. Wouldn't want Fratton Park, mind....I think the facilities at Marchwood are probably better. Thoughts anyone?

Hopefully Saints will assign the squad number '19' to Fox, that way leaves 11 free for a striker.

If he's given 5, Dickson must be on the edge.

Based on Adkins' anally retentive numbering system so far, I'm expecting him to be given the number 13 shirt as a left back (Dickson has 23, de Ridder bucks the system as a bolted-on 33 as it's 3 times his preferred number, but all the back up CBs have numbers ending in 5 or 6, and the right backs are 12 and 32 - Connolly at 22 has just retained his previous season's number). Or maybe Fox might luck into 11 - though like you I'm hoping it's kept free for someone else.

I think you underestimate their starting XI, which is reasonably decent - though as soon as they get injuries and suspensions they're screwed at the moment.

It's a good signing and I would refer all back to my OP on defence a couple of weeks back where I suggested that there needed to be action taken to improve the defence. Adkins clearly also thought this.

Having said the above, this does leave me wondering whether Adkins is taking a different approach to the CB issue. Perhaps he considers that Martin or Seaborne are good enough to stand beside Fonte if the LB position is improved, thus providing more protection to that area of the pitch? So perhaps we will not see another CB come into the team afterall. The terminology from Adkins seems to suggest that the LB slot is Fox's to take immediately, although I suspect he will be watched in training first before being given a 1st team start.

On the Maynard affair, I am not sure I believe the hype that's floating around. If we sign a striker, it's as likely to be a complete surprise, or indeed perhaps the Fox/Rodrigues story was absolutely spot on?

I shouldnt worry to much about fox only being at Celtic for a short while. Tony Mowbury purchased him and he was Celtics

first choice LB and couldplay midfield However Celtic needed to raise money to buy a striker and Burnley came in with an offer which exceeded the amount that celtic paid for him so mowbury took themoney and celtic were able to afford roy keane on loan at the same time fox was sold.
