I don't think Harding or Dickson are up to it at Championship level. Remember Leeds also got rid of Harding when they were promoted back up. I've been saying all summer we needed a left back, centre back, centre midfielder, striker and a winger if AOC left. We've ticked nearly all of them off the list and sounds as if it's just a matter of time before a CB and striker are added. So I'm more than happy with this signing and all the other deals we've done this summer.

No they didn't. They sold him to Ipswich in 2006 - Roy Keane released him in 2009.

Sounds like a better left back has been signed. The problems with the two existing left backs is that Dan Harding whilst a good tackling defender regularly gets caught out ball watching and gets wrong sided whilst of the two, Lallana has a preference for playing in front of Harding.

Replacement for Dickson then. I wonder who Mills upset to be pushed out after looking so promising a couple of seasons ago? I have to admit I was expecting a CB to partner Fonte.

Still welcome on to the bus Danny (how many Dans do we have now?)

We could field nearly a whole defence of Dans/Danny's:

(young) Danny Butterfield - Dan Seaborne - Dan Harding - Danny Fox

Three LBs seems about correct so do we have Fish for sale? Harding is a capable player but this does look like a team strengthening and so is definitely a welcome move. No reason to think it closes off other moves, and if anything confirms the willingness to spend the Chamberlain money. CB and Striker, please, ideally in time to play against Ipswich and Leicester.

Very much agree. NA has already said that other deals were in place before Chamberlain going, so hopefully there is still room for a CB and CF.

Mills was looking like going to Preston at one point wasn't he? I'm sure his days here are numbered.

Got the same impression - burnley fans said that he didn't have the pace to hack in the premiership (might have coincided with him settling at the club), though he had a much better season in the NPC. They also said that he's better going forward than defending which, if he is going to be used as LB, is a slight concern. But I completely trust Nige.

They said his positioning was rubbish.

I'd say they are, but maybe not for a team that is clearly setting it's sights very high. It's unfortunate for them because they are both decent players who helped us get promoted. Still, can't argue with the signing at all, Fox is a good player. Also good to have a left footer with consistantly good delivery from free kicks.

Fish's replacement or Dickson's replacement? Seems weird to strengthen the strongest position we have at the club, but hey ho, I haven't seen Fox play, so if he's an improvement on either of the other 3 then that's a good thing.

Still need a CB in, and perhaps a striker and/or winger, and we're pretty much there.

He's one of the best LB's in the league, it's an upgrade on Harding who i'm a fan of - but you can't pass up the chance to sign better players in positions.

Striker next..

There was a thread completely slating Guly on here last season. Don't take football fans opinions as gospel.

Of course not, I just remember what Southend fans said about Seaborne and similarly how gutted Palace fans were to lose fonte. They aren't perfect but it is interesting to read. Lets hope they are wrong!

It was one game, the majority of Burnley fans rate him as the best LB in the league.

Some Claret fans' quotes...

''Good left backs are a rare commodity. I would be unhappy if we have let him go for anything under 3 million seeing as we have no cover, no need to sell, a tiny squad and he is one of the best left backs in this league''

''This is really disappointing news. I will reserve judgement until I see the fee received - I hope it's good, very, very good. ''

''I'm absolutely dumbstruck. I've agreed with all the outgoings so far - albeit disappointed with the sale of Eagles and Mears. One of our best players and most consistent performers - I have no doubt he will be very sorely missed and the Fox bashers will realise just how good a player he is.''

''I'm really disappointed with this news if im being honest but to me it sounds like another player WANTING to leave. On the Southampton website Fox said 'I played 120 minutes for Burnley on Tuesday night against Burton Albion, and I was going to be heading to training there this morning, but I couldn't get down here quick enough to be honest'. Just makes eddies job harder, Also makes you think how true are the Jay Rod rumours to saints. ''

'oh fer flicks sake...Why are we selling Foxy.. he's one of the best in this league. :( ''

''Really can't understand this decision at all. I'm lost for words. ''

''"How long before Saints come for Jay Rod? They already have but been turned down.''

You mean let's hope one or two are wrong? The vast majority seem to love him...

Probably would have been more accurate listening to what Exeter fans were saying about him ;)

You doing your MLG impression again :).

In fairness I have had a look and the views are mixed. Really hoping he will be a success but I sincerely hope we still go ahead and get a CB as this is our biggest weakness.

Sorry, couldn't resist it.

Agree about the CB, Seaborne just isn't there for me. Martin is ok as cover but againts top strikers will get found out at times. And it seems as if old age has caught up with big Radhi. If someone like Gorkss and (as is still being rumoured) Maynard were to arrive, well that would be as close to a brilliant summer transfer window as you'd realistically hope for.

I like Harding, but IMO he is one of our weaker players, I also like Dickson, but ATM he isn't getting a game, he may be kept on as cover for the left flank but perhaps he will be sent out on loan, Mills is probably off.

Fox is a good signing, further strengthening.

If we got Gorkss and Maynard then that is the perfect window. The sale of AOC has served us well.

Got to love the way that Saints do business

All quiet and behind the scenes

Apart from the newspaper report on here and a few sources from this messageboard saying we were signing him you mean?

Reading their comments on there i feel a bit sorry for them really. They all seem to rate him, i couldn't find that negative comment that was mentioned above.

They see him as one of their best players and is another big loss for them. The sad thing is we have been in that situation ourselves where you sell anything of value and replace them with youngsters or nobody at all.

That said he is obviously a signing with an eye on the PL. He has played in the PL and SPL with Celtic. Has played in the champions league etc. I feel sorry for Harding as he will obviously be replaced (you don't spend £1.8m on a sub in the championship) and means Dickson will probably be moved on now along with Mills. But we strengthen a position and that is what progression is all about. I just hope Adkins brings in the CB we really need.

So welcome to the club Fox!

Didn't Oldham fans reckon that kid we had on loan last season was the next Stevie Gerrad? There's only one way to decide how good a signing is and that's to see them play a dozen times.

With AOC the club have known he was going since Xmas. Christ, even I knew it was a fact he was going to Arsenal back in March (although the usual suspects shouted me and others down about it at the time....). So they've had 6 months to prepare for exactly what they need to replace him and strengthen the squad. Good work all round and well done NC and NA.

Now get on with it and get the other two on the bus, pronto!

Always enjoy reading things like that after we've just signed someone.

re: Dan Fox

A decent footballer but you are way off target with best in the league,

Positives, likes to push on, likes a tackle ( only tackler in club except Jay maybe),delivers good ball into box.

Negatives, ball watches, let's too much ball be delivered into our box, can't deal with runners in behind, positionally found wanting an awful lot.

Could play midfield for me with a bit less defensive responsibility could be ok .

Interesting

I think occassionally Adkins will play Fox left midfield and allow Lallana to roam freely just behind the front two.

Agreed. Think we'll use the diamond a fair bit this year.

Welcome to the club Danny! Thanks for the nice words!

Now wih regards to the competition debate, Harding was quality on Saturday, Dickson was gash on Tuesday. I still rate Dickson, but at the moment I think Harding has to be first choice, pushed hard now by fox. It's up to whoever isn't in the starting 11 to prove that they should be.
