Need some car advice

My cousin is 22 and just passed his driving test. He's got a bit of money saved and wants to spend no more than £3,000 on the car (less if possible) and no more than £1,000 on the insurance.

I know nothing about cars so said I would turn to the experts on here for advice. What car would you recommend for this circumstance?

Unfortunately for most lads of this age the car you'd recomend aint gonna be the car they want. Things like Fiestas, Polos are good first cars. ANything low engine size, below 1.4 i'd recomend. Just have a look at the car groups, obviously the lower the group the the insurance. Think you're going to stuggle to get insurance below £1k though. I am 34, been driving for 16 years and recently had to get insurance as been on a company car for 2 years so lost my previous NCB, cheapest was £800 for car worth £500 FFS.

He can probably stretch a bit more, and anything he saves on the car can go on insurance. He's not some chavvy boy racer type, just wants a decent reliable car that performs OK and looks passable and is good value.

Ford Focus aren't bad for a first car. Pretty reasonably priced and reliable, lowish insurance group as well and cheap for repairs.

That's expensive, considering I'm 27 and pay £550 a year on a car worth 9k. You're being ripped mate.

Has he considered being a named driver on someone elses policy?

It would work out a lot cheaper, though the downside is he would not build up a no claims bonus.

And also most likely to be uninsured if he is the one mainly driving the car, which will no doubt be registered in his name!

My advice, get a moped or scooter, set up the insurance - about £200 a year - stick the moped in the garage, and use public transport until he's at least 25!

Insurance for anyone under 25 these days is an absolute joke - we tried getting our 17yo son insured on a polo worth £500, and the cheapest quote was about 4 grand!

At lease if he's goes down the scooter route, he will have 3 years NCB when he's 25, and will get a 55% discount.....

Additional drivers gain no claims on one of either direct line or churchill.

adding mum to his insurance lowers the premium more than adding dad

yaris's are very reliable. cheap to MOT

25 is the threshold for insurance, It comes down dramtically after that.

If you are 17, your insurance will be aound 2,500 for thid party, regardless of whether the car is worth only 100, the no claims help over the next few yeas, but not by a great deal, its when you hit the magic 25, that it comes right down.

Turkish is right, he will struggle to get insured for under 1000, it will be more like 2k

Only way he does that is if he doesn't get a car ;)

At his age with no NCB he needs to swop those prices around. No more than £1,000 on the car and £3,000 on the insurance is far more realistic. For a first car Id recommend something that's small and German or Japanese.

I had a conversation with someone on insurance the other day. He read an article which said that something that is pushing car insurance up is the price of new high-performance cars. There are all the obvious factors like young drivers causing more accidents etc but this is the one that is never mentioned.

So when for instance the Bugatti Veyron came out every single person's insurance quote had to be calculated so they'd be insured against hitting the most expensive car that money can buy. It's because million-dollar cars can now be bought and are on the market it's pushed all the car insurance prices up for everyone else.

Most of the increases are due to ever-increasing dodgy claims. Its becoming a booming industry especially with all the no-win, no-fee vultures nowadays. Lawyers used to be considered one of the most trustworthy of people, now they're seen as nothing but leeches.

Does anyone know what the sentence is for driving while not insured?

A friend watched one of these cop programs where he said such a driver got a £100 fine and a ban for a year. If true, no wonder people see that as an option considering the quotes given above.

I heard the figure £600 and a ban recently which is still farcically low. Then they wonder why so many young drivers don't insure their cars

Look for something older than 1997, that'll be cheaper on insurance than something newer bizarrely. Avoid the usual Corsa/Fiesta as they have higher premiums than a Punto, a 106, a Starlet for example. Limit the mileage and store it off the road (a driveway is better than on the road). Get him to do Pass Plus as that'll help.

If the total budget is £3k, set aside £1800 for insurance and get something like a Polo for a grand.

You are right of course, but if the car is in another name(the main driver on the policy),then as long as hes named, his insurance will be a lot cheaper.

Its not a long term solution, but at least he can start driving without breaking the bank.

My neighbours 18 year old daughter got 3rd party from tesco direct on a peugeot 106 for under £800, first car, first policy. Worth a call.

Thanks Scotty, but I don't even have to check it to know that is not right. Having spent 4 days solid and speaking to other parents, they are all the same give or take a couple of hundred quid.

You will probably find she is a named driver on her parents policy (Wait until the crash and for them to refuse to pay based on her being the only driver), or is only insured for a certain amount of miles or betweem certain hours.

Tesco. Audi TT 225, garaged.

Have a look on Money Supermarket, Admiral usually have some cracking deals. Also when you buy a car, make sure it isn't one that could be potentially chavved up (I was going to get a Skyline R34 or an Impreza WRX but they were around £1400 a month).
