Barnsley build up.

So what do we think after our first two games?

Same team? I can see a start for De Ridder in place of Guly. Other than that same as.

Would love to come back with the three points obviously, but this is the type of game that could easily surprise us. They managed a nil nil draw when they were expected to lose so it won't be easy.

Should be an interesting test. Hopefully we don't fall victim to one of the press' pre-season observations that we'd beat some good teams and lose to some poor ones.

Keith Hill manager of Barnsley - beat us twice with Rochdale last season... Possibly target Harding after his performance at Spotland.

I'd go for...

-----------------Davis-----------------

-Richardson--Fonte--Martin/Jaidi (if fit?)--Harding

-De Ridder---Hammond---Cork----------Lallana

--------------Connolly---Lambert------------

Bench: Bart, Seaborne, Chappers, Holmes, Guly

Hoping for a 2-1 win, COYR! :D

I cannot see NA making any changes unless forced to do so by injury. Maybe De Ridder for Guly but I expect us to be unchanged.

Me too - I think Guly is a big presence to assist in not getting bossed and De Ridder the legs to run at tired defenders perhaps. If Martin is to have any chance of developing, he needs more time alongside Fonte.

I've not been to Barnsley or indeed the football ground before - taking my two lads up with me on the coach - so what's it like? Likely to be any chav trouble? Chances of getting a pre-match pint/pie?

Nice part of Yorkshire. The ground if I remember has no roof on the away end.

Same team that played Leeds. Ill be there so hoping for a win, but I would take a draw. It strikes me that Saturday's result might have been a bit of a false economy.

I hear ya fella. That is what we have become to get used to over the past few years. Always ready to accept that this could be a banana skin type game. One we we should win but get turned over instead. It isnreally hard to get used to the fact that we have come on in leaps and bounds and become a proper football team who has every chance of winnin games. In love with it!

Barnsley is like many other Yorkshire towns - like their football and very welcoming (before & after the game). They want your money so most pubs allow away fans providing you don't look like trouble makers!

I'll be using the same watering hole as the last 2-seasons we played there - spoke with the new landlord last night and says if the car load I turn up with looked dodgey then there was another pub about 100-m away that would have away fans! They let Pompey fans in last year - and welcome anyone from the England set up! I guess if your English that's good enough!

Don't know the place well enough to recommend anywhere but remember it's South Yorkshire - the police after the Hillsborough incident they tend to be a bit touchy and not very friendly to visiting fans (unlike the lads from Hampshire) so my recommendation is behave. Situations become incidents if you are not very careful.

I think we're going to win this one 2-0. We're on the crest of a wave at the moment and I can't see it stopping anytime soon.

I think there will be changes to the team, I don't agree with all this 'don't change a winning team' stuff, because different players suit different situations, and Barnsley away is very different to Leeds at home! I reckon Chaplow's performances in the last couple of games have earned a starting spot over Guly, and I think he'll be more effective in this particular situation. I'd like to see:

Davis

Richardson - Fonte - Martin - Harding

Chaplow - Hammond - Cork - Lallana

Lambert - Connolly

Bench: Bart, Seaborne, Morgan, De Ridder, Barnard/Guly

(wow it really is hard to pick only 5 subs isn't it?)

I'd swap De Ridder for Guly. Away from home we'll be looking to hit them on the break a bit more. Though after last weeks performance, I fully expect us to be unchanged.

Barnsley got a decent point at Forest at the weekend so it won't be easy but if we're serious about mounting a push for the play-offs this season, winning games like this is a must. We can't just rely on our home form as that won't be enough.

Not sure NA will start him. Did he not say after the Torquay match that De Ridder still has to learn when to get back and defend when we haven't got the ball.

So pretty much the same for me,

I would go with this to. Think Chappers has been brilliant in the two games so far, and gives us a bit more bite in midfield. Also Adkins comments about De Ridder needing to learn to track back means he wont be risked from the start in what I think is a tricky away game. Can see De Ridder being used last 20 mins though if we need an impact player or a couple of goals to the good

Must have been a while ago then, there is a roof :)

Guly seems to be blowing hot and cold again. He could be put in the team and waste chance after chance, then again he could get a brace and an assist. Difficult call. Perhaps waiting until 65 minutes or so for some tired legs, then get De Ridder to run riot at them. (no pun intended.)

Should be an interesting game. Barnsley apparently had a decent pre-season, have made some astute signings, and got a decent result at Forest on the opening day, but then had a disastrous home defeat to Morecambe on Tuesday night. Keith Hill has a 100% record against us, so hopefully we can rectify that.

I wouldn't be too disappointed with a draw, but we've looked good so far this season (it makes a pleasant change for us to start the season well) so a win's certainly not out of the question.

I rate Keith Hill, Barnsley will be resilient opposition.

My team:

--------------------- Lambert --------------- Connolly ------------------------

Lallana ---------------- Cork ---------------- Hammond -------------- De Ridder

Harding -------------- Fonte ----------------- Martin ---------------- Butterfield

---------------------------------- Davis ---------------------------------------

Massive game. I have a feeling someone will come out on top, which means of course someone will also loose. Only the other hand both teams could come away with something. I'm sure a game will be played and both teams will compete, looking to get something out of said game. Vital time of season. This could really make or break things for Saints, or on the other hand it could also prove irrelevant. I imagine 11 men will start the game for Saints. Will all 11 finish? Well, only time will tell.

Why are people putting Chaplow on the right of midfield in a 442 ahead of natural players in that position?

Adkins' back-up tactics to the traditional 442 are a 4411 and 41212 (could also be called a 442 Diamond).

For example...

- Late on in the Leeds United game he switched to a 4411, with De Ridder as the striker and Lambert playing behind him.

- When Lallana came on in the Torquay game they switched to 41212 with Lallana behind the two strikers, Schneiderlin sitting in-front of the centre backs and Hammond and Chaplow in-front of Schniederlin playing and playing narrow (allowing the full backs to provide the width).

Also I would say Seaborne is probably still ahead of Martin in the pecking order and now as he is fit he will partner Fonte. The Leeds United game also suggests Richardson is the preferred right back, so I don't expect to see Butterfield start on Saturday.

Anyone who was at Walsall, Rochdale, Tranmere last year will know what this game could be like!!

but fingers crossed it is more like Oldham away,

I'll take a 1-0 scrappy win like at Sheff Wed.

Have a good time all the lads travelling up, any news if Chamberlain is fit again yet?

Ha ha we have a comedian in the camp...!

To be honest if Keith Hill has half the talent at Barnsley that he had at a must win Rochdale side we lost to...then we're in for a game.

His forwards hurried and hassled and midfield looked strong at Rochdale - but it's Barnsley and the players may not be enthusiastic about wanting to beat Saints or play their hearts out for him.

The main difference this year is we have Cork in the middle - he seems to take a lot of pressure off the rest of the team from what I've seen. We don't seem to panic like we did at Rochdale/Tranmere/Walsall. We outplayed Walsall and battered Rochdale but just couldn't score. Tranmere was a day when we didn't want to get stuck in! I can't see Barnsley having enough against a full strength side. As for leaving Harding out - he just had a bad night at Rochdale last year - not sure if he was fully fit?

Barnsley will be under pressure to have a go at us being at home - and we can sit back a bit. At Rochdale there was a lot of pressure on a win so we had to go for it - not the case this season! I think Hill & Adkins are good mates having done their badges together - but I think it's time for Nigel to assert himself on Saturday and take 3-points. Whatever the result the Managers will be full of praise for each other!

Anyway enough of that - who's stopping by at SMS to pick up the flag surfer for the away end this week?

I think it would be a great gesture if the team brought it up and installed in the away end before the game every week.

This!! ^^

I was at all of them apart from the Oldham game....and I'm going this weekend. So more than likely we'll be poor. Might as well add Huddersfield away to that list as well !

Stop being such a pedantic nob - people mean any number of formations when they put up a 4-4-2. Surprise, surprise, its more convenient to put it up that way. Most people are more interested in personnel e.g. whether you include Chaplow or not. Most people know that if Chaplow is included in midfield, it will be in a narrower formation, that he won't be skinning people down the wing (nobody gives a toss about depicting graphically a 4-4-2 diamond as opposed to a traditional 4-4-2, however you do that). btw you going up?

Am I the only one who vaguely remembers Chaplow playing wide right against Leeds when he came on?

I'm probably wrong to be fair.

Don't think he'll change the side and if he does I doubt De Ridder will start. Think Chaplow or Morgan would come in and we'd switch to a diamond.

How was I "proved wrong"?

Just because I, along with other people on the forum, was sure that Chaplow did play on the right on Saturday. I also remember him playing on the right quite often when he was at WBA.

No offence meant like :)

When did I say he didn't play on the right on Saturday?

That wasn't what I meant. You questioned why people were putting Chaplow on the right when that isn't his natural position, implying that this was wrong of them to do so. However myself and other posters were highlighting that he played there on Saturday so that is why we are putting him in that position.
